Manchester United fans left rueing as Tottenham win Europa League
In Malaysia, local supporters of both clubs flocked to nearby venues airing the match, filled with hope that the competition might offer a silver lining to what has been a difficult campaign. United currently sit 16th in the league – a far cry from fans' expectations.
Meeting at Piccadilly, members of the Kuala Lumpur Manchunian Red Devils Supporters Club (KLMRD), including father-son duo Rajan and Ajit, remained resilient in their support for the club.
"We were relegated many years ago, and we came back," said Rajan. "So the motto is always 'we will rise again.'"
Another KLMRD member, Gajen, did not hide his disappointment.
"It's heartbreaking. Teams that are traditionally below United are now above us," he lamented.
Despite nerves and uncertainty, fans stayed hopeful as the final kicked off in predictably cagey fashion, with both sides exchanging half-chances but neither goalkeeper being tested. This pattern continued as the game approached half-time.
Then came a stroke of misfortune for United. A Pape Matar Sarr cross from the left was met by Brennan Johnson, who sliced the ball backwards instead of towards goal. It ricocheted off the unfortunate Luke Shaw and bounced into the net, handing Spurs the lead.
The silence among United supporters was deafening as they processed the freak goal. But quickly, they rallied behind their team, urging them to respond before the break.
KLMRD committee member Yogaraj said United were frustrated by the nature of the goal and expressed hope that Alejandro Garnacho would be introduced in the second half.
Fellow United fan Ruzi remained confident, predicting a 3–1 victory. Another supporter, Dexter, added, "I'm not sure what [Rúben Amorim] is going to do, but we need a win tonight."
The second half saw a reinvigorated Manchester United pushing forward with urgency. Fans' optimism briefly returned – but as time wore on, it began to fade.
While United showed some attacking promise late in the game, it was not enough. Tottenham held on to claim their first major trophy in 17 years.
"We lost due to a soft goal. Spurs were hardly in the game, and Onana was a spectator," said a visibly disappointed Yogaraj.
"Garnacho's introduction brought some improvement. Unfortunately, we didn't score.
"It will be interesting what we do during the upcoming transfer window"

Fernandes doubled United's lead in the 52nd minute with a clever finish after another howler from Areola, whose sloppy pass out from the back went straight to United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo on the edge of the area. Mainoo slipped a pass to Fernandes, who then coolly lifted a finish over the stranded Areola to put United in control. Bowen's clever finish in the 63rd minute reduced the deficit, and the England forward forced a good save from Altay Bayindir in injury time, but United held on. 'It's good to win, even being a friendly – we want to get every game to prepare ourselves in the best way and obviously go into the season in a positive way,' Fernandes told NBC Sports after the victory. 'Overall the game was good, we were very good on the ball. In some moments we could have done longer possessions and we rushed it a little bit. We have to work on that… but I think overall it was a very good game for us.' United's new US$87 million signing Bryan Mbeumo travelled with the team to the US but did not feature in the matchday squad. Mbeumo could make his debut when United face Bournemouth in the second round of fixtures in the four-team tournament in Chicago on Wednesday. Bournemouth, meanwhile, cruised to a 3-0 victory over Everton in their opener earlier on Saturday at the same venue. Goals from Philip Billing, Dango Outtara and Daniel Adu-Adjei sealed a comfortable win for Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth side After a low-key first half, Billing fired Bournemouth into the lead in the 55th minute, gliding away from his marker at the edge of the area before unleashing a ferocious shot that flew past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. England international Pickford was beaten again four minutes later after a move that began when Outtara surged clear down the left flank. Textor later resigned from Lyon's board of directors with Michele Kang appointed chairwoman and president. The London club appealed the decision, with the CAS now confirming it will hear the case next month. Amorim took charge at struggling United in November and demanded more commitment from the squad. He also froze out key figures like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who were among five players seeking to exit the club in the close season. "A lot of the time I've been here over the last few years it's been extremely negative," said Shaw, a United player since 2014, in an interview with the BBC published on Wednesday. "It can be quite toxic, the environment, it's not healthy at all... we need an environment that's healthy, that's positive, that's got good energy and happiness. When you have all those things, you feel free and you express yourself more. "Ruben brings demands. Mentality is a big thing. He talks a lot about it... he demands 100% and doesn't want anything less. If someone's doing 85-90%, it's not enough. I think, especially this year, if you're not doing the right things, you won't play." Amorim was uncompromising as he questioned Rashford's work rate, saying he would rather pick the goalkeeper coach than half-hearted players. Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan, while British media reports have linked Garnacho with a move to Chelsea or Aston Villa. "The manager's not bothered. He doesn't care who the player is. That's how it should be. Whatever he wants, as players, we have to be delivering, and we are fully behind that," Shaw added. United, who finished 15th last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, begin the new campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17.
