Pakistan: Section 144 imposed in Rawalpindi as PTI plans to protest on Imran Khan's arrest anniversary
The country is bracing for a fresh round of protests as the former ruling party has announced it will take to the streets across Pakistan on August 5, marking two years of Khan's incarceration, demanding his release and relief for the inflation-hit masses.
The ban, effective from August 4 to August 10, prohibits all types of rallies, sit-ins, demonstrations, protests, and gatherings of more than four people within the district limits, as per Geo News.
Senior Superintendent of Adiala Jail Abdul Ghafoor Anjum sent a letter to City Police Officer (CPO), seeking additional security to prevent a possible protest by PTI supporters outside the prison.
In his letter, the jail superintendent noted that there are currently 7,700 inmates in the prison, while its capacity is only 2,174.
'PTI has planned a protest outside the jail on August 5,' the officer said, stressing the need for urgent measures to ensure foolproof security at the facility, where the PTI founder is serving jail terms in multiple cases ranging from treason to terrorism.
Additional police personnel, barriers, and surveillance should be deployed outside Rawalpindi jail to avoid any untoward incident, the letter stated.
According to Geo News, separate requests were also sent to the Home Department, IG Prisons, and RPO for security, it added.
The officer further said that Rawalpindi jail was 'very sensitive' due to the presence of political prisoners and terrorists.
Additional security should be deployed from Dahgal Checkpost to Gate No. 5 of Adiala Jail, the letter said.
PTI has repeatedly called for Khan's release, who has been behind bars for over a year. The deposed prime minister was arrested in Lahore on August 5, 2023, after being sentenced to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts.
The protest call was made by PTI stalwart Asad Qaiser during a press conference on Sunday, jointly addressed by the party's Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan and other leaders in Islamabad.
'August 5 marks the day of the PTI founder's arrest; we will stage protests on that day,' Qaiser said, referring to the Toshakhana case. (ANI)

Air Force continues HADR operation in Uttarakhand; 123 civilians rescued
Uttarakhand [India], August 9 (ANI): Indian Air Force continued its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operation on Friday in Uttarakhand after the devastating floods hit Dharali and Harsili. The X post by the Indian Air Force read, 'Chinook, Mi-17 V5 and ALH helicopters of #IAF rescued 123 civilians, inducted NDRF teams, and delivered over 4 tons of critical supplies. A special telecom unit was airlifted, swiftly restoring vital communication links to the cut-off region. IAF assets remain ready for sustained operations.' Three days after the devastating floods hit Dharali and Harsil, a total of 566 people were evacuated by Friday noon from the affected areas, while personnel still carried out rescue operations for 300 people who were stranded. At least five people have been reported dead, and 50 are still missing. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been actively involved in the rescue operations, utilising state-of-the-art equipment, including a victim locating camera and thermal imaging camera. Dog squads have been deployed alongside rescue personnel to search for stranded individuals. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with rescue agencies, and ensuring that the state's development agenda remains on track. He has also chaired a Cabinet meeting in the disaster-affected area, demonstrating his commitment to the region's development despite the crisis. As per a statement, the CM is also ensuring no hindrance in the development of the state. Camp offices have been set up to ensure the development works are sped up. A high-level review meeting was also held with the G ITBP, DG NDRF and DGP Uttarakhand Police. In this, the progress of the rescue operation, ground challenges and strengthening mutual coordination were discussed in detail. The CM sent instructions to ensure quick access to all affected areas, early rescue of stranded people and adequate deployment of relief teams in the inaccessible areas. Special emphasis was also laid on quick restoration of communication, electricity and road connectivity and uninterrupted supply of relief material. The Chief Minister gave clear instructions that there should be no delay in reaching assistance to any affected person, and the administrative machinery should work with full sensitivity. Additionally, the mobile network was also restored in the disaster-hit Harsil valley. The landslides have also disrupted the Char Dham Yatra. Nepal has initiated diplomatic efforts to search for 17 Nepalese workers who went missing in the floods. The Nepalese Prime Minister has condoled the incident and requested assistance from the Indian government. Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, while on his way back from Turkmenistan, took to social media platform Facebook and condoled the incident. 'I am deeply concerned by the tragic news of the huge loss of life and property due to floods in Uttarakhand, a neighbouring and friendly country in India. It has been reported that more than 17 Nepali citizens have also been affected by the floods. Immediate diplomatic discussions were held through the embassy for their rescue. I pay my respects to all those who lost their lives in the floods and landslides and wish the bereaved families the strength to bear the loss,' Oli wrote on Facebook. Amongst those missing 17 are from Jajrkot district, and four others from Bardiya district, local officials have confirmed. According to officials, their whereabouts have been unknown since Tuesday afternoon, following a devastating flood in the Dharali area of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, India. 'The missing locals have not been contacted since the flood, and their families are deeply worried. We also have requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist in search and rescue operations,' Hari Chandra Basnet, Chairperson at Kushe Rural Municipality in Jajarkot District told ANI over a phone call. Additionally, President of Uttarakhand Finance Service Officers Association, Jaipal Singh Tomar has informed that all Finance Service officers of the state would voluntarily donate one day's salary to the Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF). The decision reflects human sensitivity and social responsibility towards the disaster victims by the association. The situation remains critical, with the authorities working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster. 11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana to talk to family to engage Counsel to represent him
New Delhi [India], August 7 (ANI): Patiala House Court on Thursday allowed 26/11 Mumbai terror Attack alleged mastermind Tahawwur Rana to talk to his family for discussion to engage a private counsel to represent him. Tahawwur Rana is chargesheeted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in this case. He wanted to engage a private counsel. Special Judge (NIA) Chander Jit Singh pronounced the order in a closed courtroom. The court allowed the plea for the limited purpose of discussing engagement of Pvt counsel, legal aid counsel Advo Piyush Sachdeva for Tahawwur Rana , confirmed. The conversation will be recorded, it will be in presence of DS Jail, only English or Hindi, he confirmed. Patiala House Court on Tuesday reserved the order on this issue after receiving replies from the NIA and Jail authorities. On August 1, the court disposed of an application of Rana seeking a regular telephone facility for his family in view of the denial of the facility by the jail authorities. Earlier, he was permitted to make a single call to his family. Rana is in judicial custody after NIA interrogation in the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack case. He was extradited from the USA in April this year. Earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 9 filed a supplementary charge sheet against Tahawur Rana in the 26/11 Mumbai terror case. The court had extended the judicial custody of Rana till August 13. This supplementary charge sheet contains procedural documents like arrest memo, seizure memo and other documents, Rana's counsel Piyush Sachdev had told ANI. The main charge sheet was filed by the NIA in December 2011. On June 9, the Court had granted Tahawwur Rana permission to make a single phone call to his family for the time being. The call was strictly conducted in accordance with jail regulations and under the supervision of a senior official from the Tihar jail authorities. Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited from the United States. The NIA had previously informed the court that Rana was confronted with substantial evidence related to the 26/11 attacks. The agency argued for further custody, citing his evasive behaviour during questioning and lack of cooperation. Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann represented the NIA in the proceedings, while Advocate Piyush Sachdeva defended Rana. 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, Rana, was extradited recently in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The devastating attack, orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed over 170 lives and left hundreds injured. (ANI)

Approximately 28 children die daily in Gaza, UN Report says
Tel Aviv [Israel], August 6 (ANI): The United Nations in its report stated that approximately 28 children are being killed daily in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict and its restrictions on the delivery of direly needed humanitarian assistance. 'Death by bombardments. Death by malnutrition and starvation. Death by lack of aid and vital services. In Gaza, an average of 28 children a day - the size of a classroom - have been killed. Gaza's children need food, water, medicine and protection. More than anything, they need a ceasefire, NOW,' the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said in a post on X.. Since October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, more than 18,000 children have been killed in Gaza, approximately one child every hour, with total Palestinian deaths exceeding 60,933 and over 150,000 injured, as per Al Jazeera. Israel has closed Gaza's crossings since March 2, only allowing 86 trucks of aid into the besieged enclave daily, a figure equal to just 14 per cent of the minimum 600 trucks needed each day to meet the basic needs of the population, according to data from Gaza's Government Media Office. The lack of aid has led to an unprecedented famine in Gaza, as reported by Al Jazeera. UN experts and more than 150 humanitarian organisations have called for a permanent ceasefire, to allow for aid deliveries and the psychological recovery of what they've dubbed a 'lost generation'. On Wednesday, at least 83 people were killed by Israeli attacks across Gaza, including 58 aid seekers. The Palestinian Civil Defence appealed to the UN and aid agencies for 'urgent assistance and intervention' to supply the enclave with fuel for equipment to rescue the wounded. The Israeli army said that six countries have airdropped 110 more aid packages into the enclave, bringing the total amount of airdropped packages since July 27 to 785. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met top security officials to discuss war options, including the full occupation of Gaza, as per Al Jazeera. (ANI)
