Top 10 at 11: ASX opens flat as energy and utilities stocks pull back

News.com.au5 hours ago

Morning, and welcome to Stockhead's Top 10 (at 11… ish), highlighting the movers and shakers on the ASX in early-doors trading.
With the market opening at 10am sharp eastern time, the data is taken at 10.15am, once trading kicks off in earnest.
In brief, this is what the market has been up to this morning.
ASX wobbles out the gate
The ASX has had an unsettled start to the day, yo-yoing a few points either side of neutral in the first half hour or so of trade.
As of about 10.30am AEST, the ASX 200 is down 0.01% and the All Ords has gained 0.02%.
Oil prices slid overnight as tensions between Israel and Iran continued to simmer without flaring too much higher, losing 1.3% to US$73.23 a barrel of Brent crude.
Santos (ASX:STO) hovered slightly below its Monday close as investors get jittery Treasurer Jim Chalmers will nix a $8.89 a share cash deal that will give control of key Aussie LNG assets to a consortium led by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company on national interest grounds. They're sitting at $7.69 a pop.
That took the wind out of energy (-0.24%) and utilities (-0.35%) sector sails, which had been on a tear the last couple of days, effectively propping up the market against a tide of red yesterday.
The ASX All Ords gold sub-index is instead providing some stability today, up 0.78% alongside a 0.46% gain in the materials sector itself.
Tech stocks are also on the up, with the sector adding 0.36% and the index a more modest 0.24%.

ASX edges lower after Trump's Tehran warning; Gold, uranium stocks advance

The Australian sharemarket was treading cautiously on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump called for the evacuation of Tehran, in comments that contrasted with earlier optimism that Israel's war against Iran wouldn't escalate into a wider conflict. Swinging between minor gains and losses, the S&P/ASX 200 was down 10.8 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 8537.20 as of 1.31pm AEST. It had added just 1 point on Monday. The Australian dollar was up 0.1 per cent at US65.31¢ at lunchtime. US futures were down and oil climbed almost 2 per cent following Trump's comments in a social media post from the Group of Seven leaders' summit in Alberta, Canada. It wasn't clear what he was referring to but hours earlier, Trump had said Iran wanted to make a deal, sparking hopes the fighting could remain contained and pushing Wall Street higher in its session overnight. Trump earlier said Iran wanted to talk about de-escalating the conflict with Israel even as the two sides exchanged fire for the fourth consecutive day. Asked if the US would get more involved militarily, the US leader said he didn't want to discuss it. However, he is cutting short his visit to the G7, according to the White House, and returning to Washington. From the world stage back to the local sharemarket, miners, tech and energy stocks gained, holding up the ASX, while the big four banks and utilities were down. Loading Gold miners rose as Trump's warning boosted demand for havens. Bullion rose as much as 0.4 per cent to top $US3400 an ounce, following a 1.4 per cent slide on Monday, which was the biggest daily decline in a month. Northern Star Resources shares rose 2.1 per cent, Evolution Mining gained 1 per cent and Newmont Corporation gained 2.7 per cent. The iron ore heavyweights were mixed, with BHP down 0.5 per cent, while Fortescue and Rio Tinto up 0.1 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively. A rally in uranium producers boosted the energy sector after Canadian asset manager Sprott said it would buy some $US200 million ($306 million) worth of the metal for its dedicated physical uranium trust. Paladin Energy climbed 6.2 per cent, Boss Energy gained 6.1 per cent and Deep Energy jumped 8.6 per cent.

GRV finds uranium anomalies in NT

Special Report: Greenvale Energy's recent airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys have identified significant uranium anomalies at its Elkedra and Douglas River uranium projects in the NT. Preliminary results from surveys have identified uranium anomalies across multiple projects in the Northern Territory Surveys have identified an 8km uranium anomaly at Elkedra and 32km paleochannel at Douglas River Planning and permitting for follow-up fieldwork including geophysical and geochemical surveying at Elkedra The surveys completed at 100m line spacing identified a uranium anomaly with a strike length of 8km at Elkedra and a 32km paleochannel connecting the Douglas River and Jindare projects. This is well timed given that some analysts are seeing signs of a returning uranium bull market on the back of executive orders from US President Donald Trump to incentivise new uranium developments in the US. Greenvale Energy (ASX:GRV) chief executive officer Alex Cheeseman said the results reinforced the excellent potential of the company's NT projects and provided a clear pathway to the next round of exploration. 'The scale of the anomaly at Elkedra is clear, with this target now the priority focus within our NT portfolio,' he added. 'We plan to get boots on the ground as soon as possible. Planning and permitting actions are underway and we expect to be able to conduct fieldwork in Q3. 'Given the Northern Territory's long and successful history of uranium exploration and mining, to have identified such compelling targets so early in our exploration journey is a fantastic result for Greenvale.' Potential 8km strike uranium system at Elkedra. Pic: Greenvale Energy Survey results At Elkedra, the initial evaluation of recently captured radiometric data has confirmed the presence of extensive uranium and uranium/thorium anomalism. This result is consistent with and builds on the findings from the NT Geological Survey regional airborne surveys completed between 1999 and 2002 at a 400m line spacing. There is evidence that this new system has a spatial association with the Elkedra Granite, which is interpreted to be the primary source of the anomalous uranium, though the precise geological setting of the uranium mineralisation remains under investigation. Meanwhile, the Douglas River survey has confirmed a northern extension of a paleochannel system previously identified in the Jindare survey to the south. This enhances the prospectivity of the area for sandstone-hosted uranium mineralisation as paleochannels provide a favourable environment for uranium deposition, with potential for fluid transport and trapping within porous sandstone units. Road ahead While the company is awaiting detailed modelling and interpretation of the survey data, the preliminary results indicate a mineral prospectivity at Elkedra that warrants a comprehensive follow-up field program. Planning and permitting processes are underway with fieldwork expected to start in Q3, 2025. This is likely to include detailed ground geophysical surveying using handheld scintillometers targeting the anomalies identified through the recent airborne rad/mag surveys. Field programs will also seek to incorporate detailed geological mapping to better understand the lithological and structural controls on the potential uranium mineralisation. GRV adds that it could carry out geochemical sampling – including systematic collection of soil and rock chip samples across key target areas – to determine if uranium and associated pathfinder elements are present in order to refine targets for future exploration. How Melbourne renters will live like millionaires inside $1bn tower

A record-breaking new skyscraper in the heart of Melbourne is flipping the great Australian dream on its head, offering renters rooftop bars, private cinemas, co-working suites, pet spas and even a bowling alley. But while the 45-storey West Tower will deliver a lifestyle most buyers can only dream of, it's part of a growing shift in Melbourne's housing market, one that could see more people choosing not to own at all. Set to welcome its first residents in early 2026, the $1bn build-to-rent development is now the largest single build-to-rent tower in the country, with 797 apartments exclusively for lease, not sale. Located at 899 Collins St, Docklands, the Lendlease and Daiwa House project will feature a concierge, 25-metre lap pool, cinema, rooftop gardens and sweeping bay and city views, all within walking distance of the CBD. Daiwa House Australia chief executive Koji Morishige said the project aimed to raise the bar for rental housing. 'Everyone deserves a place they can call home, with everything a home can and should offer,' Mr Morishige said. Lendlease Development chief executive Tom Mackellar said long-term BTR developments like West Tower were not just lifestyle-driven, they were also about meeting demand. 'Long-term rentals provide much-needed housing supply and diversity,' Mr Mackellar said. 'They give people more choice at different stages of life.' The announcement comes amid renewed debate over the future of housing in Victoria, where house prices and rental costs remain near record highs. While some see institutional landlords as a threat to affordability, others argue they could offer much-needed consistency and quality in a system currently dominated by mum-and-dad investors. Interim REIV president Jacob Caine said large-scale build-to-rent projects would become a bigger part of Melbourne's housing mix, especially as traditional rental stock came under pressure. 'Build-to-rent is going to play a major role in Melbourne's housing future, and the announcement of a project of this scale is a huge vote of confidence in that model,' Mr Caine said. 'We need more homes of all kinds, whether that's rentals, first-home buyer listings, family homes, or downsizer-friendly options. 'Build-to-rent is one piece of the puzzle, but it's an increasingly important one.' Mr Caine said the growth of build-to-rent could help relieve pressure on renters by adding more listings to the market and offering longer leases with clearer standards of management. 'The more choice there is in the market, the more pressure we can take off prices and the greater the opportunity for Victorians to find housing that suits their needs,' he said. West Tower is part of a broader pipeline of 2800 apartments being developed by Lendlease across Melbourne and Brisbane. Its location within the Melbourne Quarter precinct means residents will also have direct access to the recently opened Quarterhouse pub and rooftop bar, and elevated green space via the city's first 'Sky Park'. And while it won't solve the housing crisis alone, industry leaders believe it's a glimpse into how future generations will live, with luxury amenities and no mortgage.
