Pakistan successfully launches Remote Sensing Satellite

In a historic leap towards technological self-reliance, Pakistan on Thursday successfully launched its Remote Sensing Satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) in China.
The launch marks a major milestone in the country's space journey and strengthens its position in Earth observation capabilities.
The project is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), and MICROSAT China, said a news release issued by SUPARCO.
Equipped with advanced imaging technology, the Remote Sensing Satellite will significantly contribute to urban planning, precision agriculture, disaster management, environmental protection, and food security.
Pakistan to launch new remote-sensing satellite from China
The SUPARCO spokesperson said the satellite is expected to aid in tracking deforestation, glacier recession, and climate change, while also enhancing management of water resources and agricultural land.
'The satellite will also play a crucial role in infrastructure monitoring, mapping transportation networks, and supporting regional planning efforts, particularly in connection with national development projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is designed to help identify geohazard risks and provide timely warnings for natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and landslides,' he added.
On this occasion, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal congratulated the nation on the successful launch of the Remote Sensing Satellite.
He extended warm felicitations to the entire team at SUPARCO, including its engineers and scientists, for achieving this remarkable feat.
'We are deeply grateful to China for its unwavering support and cooperation in this project,' said Iqbal.
He confirmed that the satellite has successfully entered its designated orbit and will soon begin delivering critical data for national use.
'We are committed to restoring Pakistan's leadership in space technology. With China's help, we plan to send a Pakistani astronaut into space next year. By 2035, we will also successfully complete our lunar mission and land on the moon,' the planning and development minister said.
SUPARCO Chairman Mohammad Yousaf Khan emphasised that the launch lays the foundation for a robust and integrated Earth Observation System.
He said the new satellite will serve national priorities and contribute meaningfully to Pakistan's sustainable socio-economic development.
The satellite's advanced data acquisition capabilities under varied environmental conditions make it an important tool for environmental monitoring and resource management.
Pakistan has made notable progress in its space research efforts in recent months.
Earlier this year, China launched Pakistan's indigenously developed Electro-Optical satellite EO-1 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, aimed at disaster prediction and resource management, Business Recorder reported on Monday.
In November last year, SUPARCO revealed plans to send its lunar rover as part of China's Chang'E 8 mission slated for 2028.
Moreover, in May 2024, Pakistan launched its first lunar satellite aboard China's Chang'E-6 probe, targeting the moon's far side — a feat China pioneered.

The press release said that the satellite established stable communication with ground stations and has begun transmitting high-resolution images, enabling the availability of data for various national sectors. 'The satellite possesses high-quality imaging capabilities that will revolutionize urban planning, infrastructure development, and regional planning, while also assisting in monitoring urban expansion and development trends,' the press release said. It added that the satellite will also strengthen disaster management systems by providing timely alerts for floods, landslides, and earthquakes. The satellite will also support improved agricultural productivity by mapping crop patterns and enhancing water resource management, thereby contributing to food security, added the statement. 'In addition, it will play a vital role in national development projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), enabling mapping of transport networks, identification of geohazards, and efficient utilization of resources.' A few days ago, I reached out to a friend working in the Punjab Seed Corporation, only to find his communication unexpectedly disrupted. When contact was reestablished, he explained that he was currently in China undergoing specialized training in hybrid seed development. I appreciated the update and casually inquired about food arrangements—he noted that this was proving difficult since meals were pre-arranged by the host institution and cooking independently wasn't allowed. While that was just a side conversation, it inadvertently brought home the scope and seriousness of the training programme underway. This initiative is part of the Prime Minister's Special Capacity-Building Programme, a forward-looking effort aimed at reshaping Pakistan's agricultural sector by sending 1,000 agricultural graduates and officials to China for advanced training. Reportedly, the first batch is returned back after completing the respective endeavour. The programme is required to be designed not only to expose Pakistan's future agri leaders to modern technologies but also to equip them with critical skills in climate-smart agriculture, digital innovation, seed technology, but also including SPS measures like Plant / Animal Quarantine with food safety, which are important segments of international trade standards. Trainings are taking place at some of China's top agricultural institutions, which are recognised globally for their advances in precision agriculture, resource-efficient farming, seed technology, and regulatory integration. While Pakistan and China differ in agricultural traditions, farm sizes, and development models, the strength of this initiative lies in the knowledge transfer that can be tailored to Pakistan's local needs. Obviously, the selected trainees—ranging from seed scientists to food safety regulators—are expected to play a critical role in translating this exposure into practical reforms back home. China's success in agriculture has been driven by its emphasis on science, data, and innovation. From deploying AI and drones in crop monitoring to developing drought-tolerant hybrid seeds and climate-smart production systems, China has created a robust ecosystem that caters to both domestic food security and international competitiveness. Pakistani participants are gaining firsthand exposure to these approaches—especially smart irrigation, protected cultivation, integrated pest management, and post-harvest technologies. However, the long-term effectiveness of this initiative depends on its alignment with ongoing institutional reforms in Pakistan—most notably the establishment of the National Agri-Trade and Food Safety Authority (NAFSA) under the May 2025 Ordinance. This new authority replaces legacy departments like the Department of Plant Protection and Animal Quarantine, aiming to centralize Pakistan's food safety, SPS compliance, and agri-trade governance. In this context, the China training programme becomes even more relevant and timely, if it is reviewed and decisively added by the incumbent government in above initiative or making it a new one in addition to above. A major component that deserves focused attention during this training is Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) systems, which remain significant barriers to Pakistan's agricultural exports. Frequent rejections of mangoes, rice, vegetables, and meat in key markets are often linked to inadequate quarantine protocols, inconsistent enforcement, and poor traceability. China's mature SPS system—harmonized with international standards like Codex Alimentarius, IPPC, and OIE—offers Pakistani officials a comprehensive model of border control, pest surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, and digital certification. Participants will also have the chance to study China's deployment of electronic phytosanitary certification (e-phyto) systems, blockchain-backed traceability, and real-time customs-quarantine coordination. These tools are essential for ensuring food safety and faster, more transparent trade facilitation—especially under NAFSA's ambitious scope. Perhaps just as important is the development of SPS diplomacy and bilateral protocol negotiation skills. By learning how China prepares its exporters, negotiates market access, and leverages its embassies and trade missions for SPS coordination, Pakistani trainees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the geopolitical and commercial side of food safety. This can directly help reduce costly interceptions in regions like the EU, ASEAN, the Gulf, and China itself. The returns on this investment extend well beyond technological upgrades. By creating a pool of professionally trained officials, scientists, inspectors, and entrepreneurs, Pakistan is building a foundation for long-term structural reform. These graduates can modernize extension services, improve inspection regimes, introduce agri-tech startups, and bridge the long-standing gaps between research, regulation, and farmer-level application. In essence, this initiative is not just a skills exchange—it is a strategic investment in Pakistan's agricultural future, with deep implications for food security, trade, and institutional reform. For it to succeed, however, the training must be goal-driven, professionally monitored, and followed by a deliberate deployment of trained personnel into key positions within public institutions and private sectors. The inclusion of plant and animal quarantine education, SPS compliance mechanisms, and food safety governance is not a side topic—it is the linchpin. Without mastering these elements, no amount of technological advancement can translate into sustained export growth or consumer protection. As the world moves toward a more climate-conscious and regulation-driven agri-trade environment, Pakistan's ability to compete will increasingly depend not just on what it grows — but on how safely and sustainably it delivers those products to global markets. As climate pressures, population growth, and market demands converge, Pakistan cannot afford to continue with business-as-usual in agriculture. Since its birth in 1947, Pakistan has journeyed through triumphs, turbulence, and tenacity. Forged in the crucible of Partition, it inherited fractured infrastructure, a fragile economy, and a volatile neighbourhood. Yet within decades, Pakistan defied odds—building institutions, nurturing civil society, and asserting strategic relevance. Today, the question is no longer what went wrong. It is: how do we finally get it right? Pakistan's early years were defined by institutional consolidation and diplomatic agility. The establishment of a robust military, a functioning bureaucracy, and a legal framework laid the foundation for statecraft. The Green Revolution in agriculture, the Indus Basin irrigation system, and major dams like Tarbela and Mangla transformed food security and energy access. In science and technology, Pakistan made bold strides. The nuclear program -culminating in the 1998 tests - was a testament to strategic resolve. SUPARCO, though underfunded, laid early groundwork for satellite development. In medicine and philanthropy, figures like Abdul Sattar Edhi and Dr. Adeeb Rizvi built institutions that rival global benchmarks. Pakistan also produced two Nobel laureates whose achievements continue to inspire. Dr. Abdus Salam, a theoretical physicist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering work in electroweak theory. Malala Yousafzai - the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate - became a beacon for youth empowerment and gender equity. Karachi, once the beating heart of Pakistan's commercial enterprise; Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was not only a symbol of national pride - it was a global leader; helping launch Emirates, Air Malta, and other carriers. Culturally, Pakistan's literary, musical, and artistic heritage flourished. From Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poetry to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's qawwali, Pakistan projected soft power that transcended borders. In sports, Pakistan once dominated the global stage - world champions in hockey, squash, and cricket. The 1992 World Cup win united a divided nation, while legends like Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan inspired generations. Yet these achievements coexist with chronic underperformance. Political instability -punctuated by military coups, judicial overreach, and dynastic politics - has eroded democratic continuity. Civil-military imbalance remains a structural fault line, often stalling reform and undermining civilian authority. Economic mismanagement has been another Achilles' heel. Despite abundant natural resources - coal, copper, gas, and fertile land - Pakistan has struggled with fiscal discipline, tax reform, and industrial diversification. Reliance on foreign aid and IMF bailouts has created a cycle of dependency, stifling innovation and self-reliance. Education and health sectors remain underfunded and unevenly distributed. Literacy rates hover below regional averages; public health infrastructure is overstretched; brain drains continues to sap talent, while youth unemployment fuels disillusionment. Security challenges - ranging from terrorism to sectarian violence - have diverted resources and attention from development. The war on terror cost: thousands of lives lost, billions spent, and a tarnished global image. Why Pakistan has not realized its potential The answer lies in a convergence of internal contradictions and external pressures. Internally, Pakistan has struggled to build consensus on national priorities. Ethnic divisions, provincial disparities, and ideological polarization have fragmented policymaking. The absence of long-term planning - replaced by reactive governance - has led to policy reversals and institutional fatigue. Externally, Pakistan's geopolitical location - while strategic - has often been a double-edged sword. Entanglements in Cold War alliances, the Afghan conflict, and regional rivalries have shaped foreign policy more than domestic imperatives. Strategic depth often came at the expense of economic breadth. Moreover, Pakistan's elite capture - where a narrow segment controls wealth, influence, and policy - has perpetuated inequality and stifled meritocracy. Land reforms were never fully implemented. Industrial cartels and monopolies have resisted competition. The disconnect between governance and grassroots needs remains stark. The tragedy of East Pakistan's secession in 1971 was a watershed moment - born of political neglect, economic disparity, and cultural alienation. Yet, half a century later, the lessons remain unlearned. In Balochistan, similar patterns of marginalization persist. Pakistan must treat every province not as a periphery, but as a partner. The path forward: Six pillars of renewal: Institutional reform and rule of law: Strengthen democratic institutions, ensure judicial independence, and depoliticize civil services. Accountability must be institutional - not episodic. Economic diversification and innovation: Move beyond textiles and agriculture. Invest in IT, renewable energy, and value-added manufacturing. Reform taxation and document the informal economy. Education and human capital: Declare a national education emergency. Reform curricula, train teachers, and expand vocational and digital learning. Scale public-private partnerships in health and education; Regional connectivity and peace diplomacy: Pivot from confrontation to cooperation. Trade with neighbours, cultural exchanges and regional infrastructure can build trust and strategic depth. Climate resilience and sustainability: Prioritize water management, reforestation, and disaster preparedness. Integrate green infrastructure into urban planning. Civic engagement and narrative sovereignty: Reclaim Pakistan's story. Empower youth, promote pluralism, and foster inclusive discourse through media, academia, and civil society. A nation waiting to rise Pakistan's journey has been neither linear nor easy - but its resilience is undeniable. It has weathered wars, disasters, and internal strife. What it now demands is not just reform, but renewal. A new social contract - rooted in equity, accountability, and aspiration - can unlock the promise long deferred. Pakistan's potential is not theoretical - it is tangible. It lives in its classrooms and clinics, its startups and studios, its villages and cities. It pulses through the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, the deserts of Thar, the shores of Gwadar, and the streets of Karachi - once a global aviation hub and cradle of commercial dynamism. It echoes in the hopes of Balochistan's youth - long marginalized, now central to the nation's future. The time for hesitation is over. The time for transformation is now.
