Philly duo to open slider pop-up in South Kensington

Axios11-07-2025
Slide through, Philly, to the new mouth-watering pop-up taking over South Kensington.
Why it matters: The Slider Co., owned by Philadelphians William Johnson and Anesha Garrett, is teasing its homemade sliders and cookies over the next three months before opening a brick-and-mortar shop in Fishtown this fall.
Driving the news: The pop-up opens today at 4pm in the outdoor courtyard of The Luxe.
The first 100 guests will get complimentary sliders of their choice.
Zoom in: Their fan favs include: the 95 South, a buttermilk fried chicken slider on cornbread.
Fat Mama Cheeseburger — angus beef patty with sharp cheddar, pickles, baby greens, red onion, tomato, topped with tarragon Russian dressing.
The Kitchen Sink — a vegan crispy quinoa patty on a sweet potato bun with vegetable ceviche, baby greens, black bean-sriracha sauce and avocado purée.
Flashback: Johnson and Garret teamed up shortly after meeting in 2016.
Johnson worked for local chef Christopher Todd before starting his own catering company in 2011. He has traveled to dozens of countries on a culinary circuit exploring how other cultures do food.
Garrett, a pastry chef, worked for decades in healthcare before launching the pastry business Sugar Bouppies, a nod to a nickname her grandmother gave her.
What they're saying: The Slider Company, which contracts with Aramark and does catering for several Philly-area hospitals, hopes to eventually expand nationwide, Johnson says.
"But for now, we are thrilled to be popping up in our hometown of Philadelphia to show the sandwich capital of America what we're all about."

Canadian dollar falls as inflation data fuels rate cut bets

By Fergal Smith TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar hit its lowest in almost three weeks against its U.S. counterpart on Tuesday as oil prices fell and cooler domestic inflation data raised expectations the Bank of Canada would cut interest rates in the coming months. The loonie was trading 0.4% lower at 1.3855 per U.S. dollar, or 72.18 U.S. cents, after touching its weakest intraday level since August 1 at 1.3860. Canada's annual inflation rate eased to 1.7% in July from 1.9% in the prior month, helped by lower gasoline prices, while 3-month annualized measures of underlying inflation that the BoC closely tracks decelerated to 2.4% from 3.4%, according to Reuters calculations. "I think the more impactful bit of the report is that deceleration in three-month rates of core CPI," said Robert Both, senior Canada macro strategist at TD Securities. "So even with CPI-trim and median still running near 3% year-over-year, the bank has put a little more weight on those three-month core rates." Investors see a 39% chance of a rate cut from the Canadian central bank at the next policy decision on September 17, up from 31% before the data, and have leaned heavily toward an easing of policy by October. The price of oil, one of Canada's major exports, was down 1.1% at $62.71 a barrel as traders assessed the possibility that talks between Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. to end the war in Ukraine could lead to the lifting of sanctions on Russian crude, raising supply. One possible bright spot for the loonie was the ending of a strike by flight attendants at Air Canada, the nation's largest carrier, which could have weighed on the domestic economy. Canadian bond yields moved lower across the curve, with the 10-year down 4.4 basis points at 3.446%. How US defense companies could benefit from Ukraine talks

US President Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky and other European leaders at the White House on Monday. Former US ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor joins Market Catalysts to discuss how Trump will likely try to secure commitments from European leaders to buy from US defense companies as part of his negotiation asks. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Market Catalysts. We obviously know that President Trump is quite transactional in all of these negotiations, whatever, pretty much whatever we're talking about. Um, and I wonder the likelihood that from these European leaders, he will try to secure more concessions in terms of them, perhaps buying US arms to supply to Ukraine, sort of going through them. Um, you know, how does that all fit into this this overall picture? Absolutely right, Julie, and he's basically got that. Um, he has President Trump has agreed, um, that the that we, the United States and defense firms will sell, US defense firms will sell weapons to the Europeans, the the NATO allies in Europe for them to provide to the Ukrainians. Uh, so that and that's a change actually. That's a that's a a policy definition, specification that hadn't we hadn't seen before. So that's a good thing. Europeans are ready to step up. They've committed a lot more money. Uh, there's even more money, Julie, sitting in Russian money that could be seized, um, in in Western banks, uh, that could be used uh, to perk for the Ukrainians to buy weapons from US manufacturing, US defense firms to be able to defend themselves against the Russians. So there's that that is uh, that mechanism you described is in place and and going to move forward.
