This summer, the Elgin area is chock-full of annual festivals, parades and other events. Here's a rundown of things you can add to your calendar.
June 1: Elgin Valley Fox Trot begins and ends just north of the Gail Borden Library at Grove Avenue and Kimball Street in downtown Elgin. The 10-mile run starts at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 5K starts at 7:40 a.m. Registration is $60 for the 10-mile and $45 for the 5K. June 6-8: St. Sophia Greek Fest, taking place on parish grounds at 525 Church Road in Elgin, celebrates Greek food, music and culture. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. stsophiagreekfest.com
June 7: Elgin's family-friendly LGBTQ+ Pride Parade will step off from the South Riverside Drive parking lot at 11 a.m., and make its way to Festival Park, 132 S. Grove Ave. A related fest with music, vendors, food and beverages will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the park. elginpride.org
June 7-8: Rails to Victory World War II reenactment rides be held at10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m Sunday at the Fox Valley Trolley Museum, 365 S. Scripps National Spelling Bee finals air Thursday night
May 29 (UPI) -- The final round of the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee gets underway at 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday with nine contestants vying for the title. The event pits 243 spelling champions from every state and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands to determine which one earns the Scripps Cup during the spelling competition's 100th year. Contestants from Canada, the Bahamas, Germany, Ghana, Kuwait and Nigeria also compete for the title. National Spelling Bee contestants must not be older than age 15 or have progressed beyond the eighth grade. They advance to the National Spelling Bee by competing in regional competitions. This year's nine finalists are between the ages of 11 and 14. Last year's runner-up, Faizan Zaki, 13, from Allen, Texas, is among the nine finalists. He lost in a tie-breaking spell-off to last year's winner, Bruhat Soma. The winner receives a custom trophy, $52,500 in cash prizes, a commemorative medal and a one-year subscription to reference works from Merriam-Webster and the Encyclopedia Britannica. All finalists receive at least $2,000, with the second-place finisher winning $25,000. More than one person can tie for the championship. When two or more contestants tie for the title, each receives the $50,000 grand prize from the National Spelling Bee. The finals will be aired live on ion, which is available via streaming and many television cable and satellite subscription services. This year's National Spelling Bee began on Tuesday, when 60 contestants were eliminated during a preliminary spelling and vocabulary round. Another 84 spellers were eliminated later on Tuesday after completing a written spelling and vocabulary test. Three quarterfinal rounds held narrowed the field to 57 semifinalists on Wednesday, and four semifinal rounds produced the nine contestants who qualified for Thursday night's final round. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been held annually since 1925, when nine students competed for the title. It was suspended from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition has created a historical archive to celebrate the spelling competition's centennial year. This year's competition is its 97th and is being held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., which has hosted the event since 2011.

Aviation history from WWII era relived this weekend at Hagerstown Aviation Museum
HAGERSTOWN, Md. () — With the weekend approaching, it may well be worth your while to take a step back in time to revisit Hagerstown's place in World War II aviation history. The Hagerstown Aviation Museum is showcasing Friday through Sunday, the only two World War II super-bombers remaining. 'That B-29 is a special aircraft,' Mark Novak, chief pilot of the imposing plane, said. 'It's pretty special. Of the 4,000 built, only two are left.' Hagerstown City Council poised to approve tax hike As executive director of the B-29, Josh Wells said the plane has a distinctive attachment to Hagerstown, home to Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing until 1984. 'Hagerstown has a special place in aviation history and our nation's air power strength,' Wells said. Visitors to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum this weekend can relive the city's glory years as a center for aircraft manufacturing. 'Visitors this weekend will get an up-close and personal touch and feel for the aircraft,' Wells said. 'And take a ride in these historic airplanes, well, it really brings history to life.' Rides on the planes will leave an indelible impression, Novak said. 'You see it and hear it start and watch it fly and take a ride on it and, well, it's quite an experience,' Novak said. And don't forget that museum tour. After pandemic struggles, Hagerstown is upbeat about revived local economy You are going to experience history,' Monica Miller with the museum said. 'It's really special because the aircraft we have on display were made right here. There's aren't too many museums that can say that.' 52nd annual Greek Fest kicks off in Vestal
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The weekend after Memorial Day means it's time for residents of Greater Binghamton to be Greek for a Day, or perhaps four days. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Vestal is holding its 52nd annual Greek Festival today through Sunday. This afternoon, guests were enjoying live music from singer John Koutsaris, keyboardist Theodore Gritziotis and bouzouki player George Gritziotis. As usual, lots of Greek delicacies were coming off the grill and out of the church kitchen, including gyro, souvlaki, mousaka, pastichio and spanakopita. There's a baked good section with baklava, diples, finikia and more. And don't forget the honey puffs and baklava sundaes. Drinks include Greek beer and wine, including a retsina, a traditional Greek wine that includes pine resin. Festival Chairman Jimmy Anastos, whose father Steve oversaw the event for decades, says he grew up working at the Greek Fest. Today, his own children, nephews and cousins are part of the more than 50 volunteers that make the fundraiser for the church possible. 'What can Greeks do better? Eat, drink, dessert and music. That's what we have in our culture, that's what we live by, that's how we grew up around the dinner table with Greek music and food. And that's what we have to offer and what we want to give all the Vestal community and the surrounding communities around the Triple Cities,' Anastos said. In addition to the music, there will be Hellenic dancers tomorrow at 5:30 and 7:30, Saturday at 1:30, 4 and 6:30 and Sunday at 1:30. The traditional leg of lamb dinner is available Sunday only. The hours are noon to 8 today through Saturday and noon to 4 on Sunday. There will be a shuttle bus available from the NYSEG lot on Old Vestal Road Friday from 6 to 9 and Saturday from 2 to 9.
