ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions selected defensive tackle Tyleik Williams of Ohio State with the 28th pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night.
The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Williams started 13 games for the 2024 national champions with 46 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks.

While the Lions return defensive tackles Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader, McNeill might not be available to start the season after suffering a torn ACL in December. Williams could fill that void.
With Detroit coming off a 15-win season, general manager Brad Holmes is in the best position for the draft since he took the Lions job in 2021. In his first four drafts, Holmes chose six eventual Pro Bowlers.
The Lions won the NFC North title and the top overall seed in the conference despite a rash of injuries, especially on defense, but were one and done in the playoffs, losing in the divisional round to visiting Washington.
In the past three drafts, Holmes had traded up in the first round, but he stayed put this time. The Lions had six picks remaining in subsequent rounds.

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark's arrival and a major surge in viewers over the past year led to ION Television reaching a multiyear agreement on Friday to extend its broadcasting partnership with the WNBA. ION, which is owned by the Cincinnati, Ohio-based, E.W. Scripps Company, did not reveal the length or value of the contract, which extends the network's original deal reached in 2023 to broadcast regular-season games and host a weekly studio show. The existing three-year deal is worth $13 million per season. In a release, ION said the average viewership for its WNBA Friday Night Spotlight show increased by 133% from 2023 to '24, and attracted more than 23 million unique viewers, including game coverage. The jump coincides with Clark's celebrated rookie season in Indiana last year. The network reaches more than 128 million homes though its various platforms. Last year, the WNBA struck an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC that begins in 2026 and is worth about $200 million a year.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise has been named winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as the national player of the year, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Friday. Lodise is the third player in program history to win the Howser, joining J.D. Drew in 1997 and Buster Posey in 2008. The award has been presented annually since 1987 and is named after former FSU All-American and head coach Dick Howser. Lodise was named Atlantic Coast Conference player and defensive player of the year, and he also is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the nation and Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top shortstop. Lodise ranked among the national leaders with a .394 batting average, 17 home runs, 18 doubles, 68 RBIs and .705 slugging percentage. He committed only five errors on 216 fielding chances (.977) and was part of 34 double plays. The junior from Jacksonville, Florida, had at least one hit in 48 of his 58 games. He had 31 multi-hit games and 13 games with three or more hits. Among his season highlights was hitting for the cycle in a March 25 game against Florida — finishing it with a walk-off grand slam.

Packers RB Josh Jacobs led NFL in rushing yards negated by penalty in 2024 Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs led all NFL players in rushing yards negated by penalties and was tied for the NFL lead in touchdowns negated by penalties during the 2024 season, per a Friday the 13th deep drive into "unlucky" stats by Kevin Patra. Jacobs lost out on 94 rushing yards, the most among all NFL players, and three touchdowns, tied for the most. Among the touchdowns that didn't count was a 19-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty against the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 29 and a 6-yard receiving touchdown nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty against the Detroit Lions on Dec. 5. The Packers lost both games. Jacobs also had a 20-yard touchdown run negated by a holding penalty against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 15, delaying his first career Lambeau Leap. Much of Jacobs' negated rushing yards came during the first half of the season, including a 16-yard run against the Jacksonville Jaguars and a 23-yard run against the Tennessee Titans. Jacobs still finished the season with 1,329 rushing yards (sixth most in NFL) and 16 total touchdowns (tied for fifth most) and made the Pro Bowl. Jacobs recently said he wants to create more explosive plays in an effort to go from great to elite in 2025. Could a little better penalty luck help as well?
