North Texas, Oklahoma State meet in NIT following dramatic wins

Miami Herald25-03-2025

Oklahoma State entered the NIT as a losing team.
Now it has a chance to make the NIT semifinals as a winning team.
The fourth-seeded Cowboys host second-seeded North Texas Tuesday night in Stillwater with a trip to Indianapolis for next week's semifinals at stake.
Oklahoma State got there by upsetting top-seeded SMU 85-83 Sunday in Dallas when Brandon Newman intercepted Tibet Gorener's inbounds pass with one second left. Abou Ousmane hit the go-ahead shot, a turnaround jumper, with 33 seconds remaining.
Bryce Thompson pumped in 24 points, one off his career high, to lead the team. The Cowboys (17-17) shot 50.8 percent from the field and made 10 of 21 3-pointers.
"I appreciate them and their character and their resolve," Oklahoma State coach Steve Lutz said. "There's a lot of teams across the country that would have just packed it in, right, and just not competed throughout the season. There's a lot of teams that just never would have gotten their head above water."
Thompson leads the Cowboys in scoring at 12.9 ppg, while Ousmane hits for 12.4.
Meanwhile, the Mean Green (26-8) also advanced in dramatic fashion, nipping Arkansas State 65-63 on Sunday night in Denton, Texas, when Jasper Floyd sank a turnaround jumper with two seconds left. The shot capped a fine all-around effort for Floyd, who finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.
"We were able to make one more play at the end," said North Texas coach Ross Hodge. "That's usually what it comes down to this time of year."
North Texas finished second in the American Athletic Conference behind Memphis but lost in the AAC semifinals to UAB, dropping it into the three-letter tournament.
Drake transfer Atin Wright leads the Mean Green in scoring at 14.9 ppg but managed just three points on Sunday night. They play at a slow tempo, averaging just 68.2 ppg, but are good on free throws (77.4 percent) and 3-pointers (36.0 percent).
North Texas stopped Oklahoma State in the NIT quarterfinals two years ago in Stillwater on its way to the tournament title.

Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs get huge Cowboys minicamp updates

The post Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs get huge Cowboys minicamp updates appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Dallas Cowboys are entering a new era under head coach Brian Schottenheimer in 2025. Dallas made some impressive offseason moves over the past few months that have them ready to compete this fall. The Cowboys also got some good news today at the start of mandatory minicamp. Cowboys stars Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs are both attending mandatory minicamp, per The Athletic's Jon Machota. This is a big development for the Cowboys to have two star players back with the team. Parsons has been in a contract dispute with the Cowboys this offseason. He is seeking a massive multi-year extension with Dallas and is rumored to be looking for $200 million on the new deal. Cowboys fans, and the rest of the NFL media, have critiqued the Cowboys for dragging their feet on extending Parsons. Still, Parsons promised that he would attend minicamp and he delivered. 'I will be there,' Parsons posted on social media on Wednesday. 'I haven't missed a mini-camp in 4 years! Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook ! I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it's in the owner's hands. I'm ready to win a Super Bowl !' Parsons added that he did not want to 'give away any money for fines either.' Hopefully the Cowboys finally lock Parsons up on an extension before the start of the regular season. The return of Trevon Diggs is a great sign that he is on the mend. Diggs has been away from the team this offseason while he rehabs his surgically repaired knee. As a result, he has missed the first two phases of the team's offseason program. Diggs is taking his recovery seriously and has been rehabbing in Miami. He may even leave some money on the table if he misses enough offseason activities. Perhaps that helps explain Diggs' presence in Dallas this week. Either way, the Cowboys will get a good look at Diggs at mandatory minicamp. They will likely play it safe with Diggs this offseason and not rush him back onto the field if he is not ready. In the meantime, the Cowboys will be set at outside cornerback with DaRon Bland, Kaiir Elam, and rookie Shavon Revel Jr. taking snaps at outside cornerback. Micah Parsons will attend Cowboys training camp with or without a contract extension: 'I'll be out there'

Micah Parsons confirmed that he would attend the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California in August, even if he and the team do not reach a new contractual agreement. The statement comes as the pass rusher attempts to negotiate a new deal in Dallas. On Tuesday, Parsons was present at the Cowboys mandatory minicamp and told media members, 'I'll be out there.' Advertisement Parsons did not clarify if he would be participating in the Oxnard camps despite guaranteeing his presence. He also did not participate in drills on Tuesday despite addressing the press. According to The Athletic's Jon Machota, Parsons mentioned a lengthy meeting with team owner Jerry Jones in which his contract was not discussed. The Cowboys' minicamp runs through Thursday, meaning Parsons may get an answer about his contract over the next 48 hours. Before Tuesday, Parsons made a social media statement that had fans wondering if he was foreshadowing a training camp holdout. 'Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook!' Parsons posted on X. 'I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it's in the owner's hands. I'm ready to win a Super Bowl." Advertisement Parsons is currently under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract that pays him $24 million in 2025. In his fourth year with America's Team, the 26-year-old tallied 30 solo and 13 assisted tackles with 12 sacks. Unfortunately, after three straight 12-5 seasons, the Cowboys had a tragic 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The brutal ending led to the Cowboys firing coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. The head coach was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer, who assured Parsons his contractual limbo would be sorted. After Parsons called his new coach for a TikTok video, Schottenheimer commended Parsons' attitude over the situation. 'I know this is weird for everybody, but look, you're handling everything the right way, bro,' Schottenheimer told Parsons. 'This thing is going to get worked out.'

Veteran CB Gilmore remains ideal Cowboys contingency

The Dallas Cowboys might appear done adding to the cornerback room, but we say don't let the quiet fool you. There's still one name that should be hovering just below the surface — and it's one Cowboys fans know well. Stephon Gilmore. Advertisement The same Gilmore who started 17 games last season. The same Gilmore who represented himself at Tyron Smith's retirement press conference with a sense of dignity, maturity, and composure that speaks volumes about how he's viewed within the building. The same Gilmore who, as our Mike Fisher was first to report, showed up at The Star a little while back, just to casually visit. He hasn't signed anywhere else. And there's a reason why: he fits in Dallas. Still. At this point, he's not part of the plan. But it seems clear he's still the contingency. If Shavon Revel Jr. isn't ready by August... If Trevon Diggs' ACL recovery doesn't stay on track... If rookie Caelen Carson needs more time to develop… Advertisement We say Stephon Gilmore's phone will ring. And why wouldn't it? He's a reliable communicator. He'll bring championship level experience. He could likely be had for $5 million or less. (Maybe way less.) And on top of all that, he's not coming in to be CB1 — he's coming in to stabilize everything behind it if the Cowboys find themselves needing to. But even beyond the field, Gilmore's presence could serve a deeper purpose. Every young room needs that trusted mentor — the seasoned, steady voice who can guide through tough moments, missed assignments, and early doubt. A big-brother-like figure who's seen the highs and lows, and still shows up the same way every day. Advertisement The Cowboys have high hopes for their youth at corner. But youth needs guidance. And in the right situation, Stephon Gilmore can still be the anchor behind the scenes — whether he's CB3, or simply the voice that helps CB2 become CB1. This story may be dormant — but it should not be dead. And if the contingency becomes reality, the Cowboys should be trusted to know exactly where to turn and who to sign.
