Veteran CB Gilmore remains ideal Cowboys contingency

Veteran CB Gilmore remains ideal Cowboys contingency

Yahooa day ago

The Dallas Cowboys might appear done adding to the cornerback room, but we say don't let the quiet fool you. There's still one name that should be hovering just below the surface — and it's one Cowboys fans know well.
Stephon Gilmore.
The same Gilmore who started 17 games last season. The same Gilmore who represented himself at Tyron Smith's retirement press conference with a sense of dignity, maturity, and composure that speaks volumes about how he's viewed within the building.
The same Gilmore who, as our Mike Fisher was first to report, showed up at The Star a little while back, just to casually visit.
He hasn't signed anywhere else. And there's a reason why: he fits in Dallas. Still.
At this point, he's not part of the plan. But it seems clear he's still the contingency.
If Shavon Revel Jr. isn't ready by August... If Trevon Diggs' ACL recovery doesn't stay on track... If rookie Caelen Carson needs more time to develop…

We say Stephon Gilmore's phone will ring.
And why wouldn't it?
He's a reliable communicator. He'll bring championship level experience. He could likely be had for $5 million or less. (Maybe way less.) And on top of all that, he's not coming in to be CB1 — he's coming in to stabilize everything behind it if the Cowboys find themselves needing to.
But even beyond the field, Gilmore's presence could serve a deeper purpose.
Every young room needs that trusted mentor — the seasoned, steady voice who can guide through tough moments, missed assignments, and early doubt. A big-brother-like figure who's seen the highs and lows, and still shows up the same way every day.

The Cowboys have high hopes for their youth at corner. But youth needs guidance. And in the right situation, Stephon Gilmore can still be the anchor behind the scenes — whether he's CB3, or simply the voice that helps CB2 become CB1.
This story may be dormant — but it should not be dead. And if the contingency becomes reality, the Cowboys should be trusted to know exactly where to turn and who to sign.

Isaiah Adams appears to be on track to be Arizona Cardinals' starting right guard

Isaiah Adams appears to be on track to be Arizona Cardinals' starting right guard After starting the final five games of last season, the 2024 third-round draft pick seems to be the plan at right guard. One of the positional questions for the Arizona Cardinals in their starting lineup is at right guard. Will Hernandez remains a free agent and perhaps could return after he has fully recovered from his torn ACL, but we do appear to have some answers for the position. Manning the first-team right guard position is 2024 third-round pick Isaiah Adams. While head coach Jonathan Gannon has not said that specifically, we do have references to it. Starting center Hjalte Froholdt, who spoke to reporters after Wednesday's practice, referred to the offensive line's need to be consistent, whether it is with "Evan and Isaiah right now, or if someone else comes in there." Evan is, of course, Evan Brown, their starting left guard. Isaiah would be Isaiah Adams. Froholdt is happy with what Adams has done so far. Adams started the final five games of the season at right guard, and Froholdt noted how important that experience was for him. "I think Zay has done a tremendous job," he said. "I think he got thrown a little bit into the fire last year, and what better way than just to get tossed in there. It's the best. You make some mistakes and learn from it, so I think that having those opportunities last year has made him such a better player this year." Froholdt continued. "He's a big strong dude. It's nice being in there with him. He plays long. He's smart. He's good to communicate. He understands it, so it's been really good to see what Isaiah has been doing so far." While one might say that it is only minicamp, this is true, and things could change. However, In each of the last two offseasons under Gannon as head coach, they have identified their first-team offensive line in the offseason program to get them working together with consistency and chemistry. In 2023, when left guard was a question, Elijah Wilkinson was with the first team and started the games when he was healthy. Last year, after they signed Brown and it was uncertain where he would play after being a starting center and starting right guard for the previous three seasons for the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks, he was put in immediately at left guard and he played almost every snap of the season there. So having Adams at right guard now is a good sign that he is pegged as the team's starter for the regular season. The San Francisco 49ers have already made one major change to their receiving corps this offseason and now a second move has been urged, but one that would reel in a much greater reward. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers reevaluated their needs at wide receiver earlier this offseason and came out with some major takeaways. Namely, they moved to get younger and cheaper at the position, trading former No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Advertisement Certainly a bold move on their part, general manager John Lynch has remained steadfast in his commitment to adapt this group while easing the burden on their cap. That line of decision making raised questions about the team's intentions with their new No. 1 Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco has not been shy about their new strategy, so there has been some sentiment to trading Aiyuk. However, Niners insider Grant Cohn has taken that a step further, urging the team to to work with the Commanders again. This time they would send Aiyuk and return Terry McLaurin in the deal. "McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback. I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington." Advertisement Much of that projection involves Aiyuk's relationship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels who happens to be a very close friend. But a straight-up swap for the two players is not happening. While McLaurin's contract disputes with the team has led to a holdout from mandatory minicamp, trading him away would seem an egregious error for a team on the rise. He consistently posts 1,000 yards and comes off arguably his best campaign yet. Daniels and Aiyuk may have a strong relationship, but sacrificing an arguable top 10 receiver for a player coming off a serious ACL injury makes for an extremely high risk. For the Niners, McLaurin would be great to have in a vacuum. But any trade that happens will still need his extension situation sorted out afterward. The Niners have committed big money to several players this offseason and this would be another. Advertisement McLaurin will likely demand a salary well over $30 million per year and higher than the number Aiyuk sits at now. Pulling off such a trade essentially puts them in the same place financially with a longer commitment to an older receiver. More likely than not, Washington will eventually meet their star at the negotiating table and get a new deal done. Cowboys' $97 million man targeting Week 1 return after 2 years of injuries

Cowboys' $97 million man targeting Week 1 return after 2 years of injuries After tearing his ACL last season, Diggs has his sights set on returning for the season opener. Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, who missed the final six games last season after undergoing surgery to repair a knee injury, has his sights set on returning Week 1 vs the Philadelphia Eagles, according to reporter Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. While the All-Pro is hoping to follow through on his first major goal of the upcoming 2025 season, it will ultimately come down to how well he progresses during training camp. Dallas signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million extension heading into the 2023 season, but he hasn't played much since then. The former 2020 second-round pick has battled through the injury bug and has missed plenty of football, 21 games to be exact, over the past two seasons, most notably in 2023 after a gruesome ACL tear suffered during a September practice sidelined him for 15 games. Before the injuries came into the picture, Diggs had firmly established himself as one of the NFL's premier playmakers on the back end. His ability to take away a side of the field, bait quarterbacks into mistakes, and create game-changing turnovers made him a centerpiece of Dallas' defense and a massive piece to replace once he went down. Now under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys will be eager to see Diggs back in the fold as well as hope to see Diggs and fellow All-Pro teammate DaRon Bland see plenty of action on the field at the same time.
