Mohammed Siraj Reveals Heartwarming Advice From Ravindra Jadeja: 'Remember Your Father...'

Mohammed Siraj, inspired by Ravindra Jadeja's advice, delivered a match-winning performance at Oval, securing India's 2-2 series draw against England.
Star India pacer Mohammed Siraj has said that senior pro Ravindra Jadeja asked him to remember his father and pull off a match-winning performance for him at Lord's, and although it was a heartbreak for Siraj after he couldn't help India get over the line, he didn't leave anything to chance at Oval.
With four wickets in hand and 35 runs to get, England held the edge before start of play but the gladiator in Siraj made life hell for the opposition batters from ball one.
In the end, his effort, complemented quite well by Prasidh Krishna at the other end, left England short by the thinnest of margins and permitted India to sign off 2-2 in the high-pressure five-game rubber.
'I feel amazing because we fought hard from day one till now. My plan was to hit my areas consistently and build pressure. Everything from there was a bonus. When I woke up today, I thought I could do it," Siraj said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, having picked up the Player of the Match award.
'I downloaded a picture from Google saying 'believe.' I thought the Brook drop was a game-changing moment. If it had been taken, we might not have come out today. But the way he attacked, hats off to him," Siraj added.
The star India pacer, India's stoic warrior in the series, made the old ball talk in his opening over from the pavilion end and got the ball to shape away.
Every ball of that Siraj over was an event. 'I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation," the star pacer later said of his match-winning performance that fetched him nine wickets in the match, including a five-wicket haul in the all-important second innings.

'Questions On Captaincy Just Vapourised': Sanjay Bangar Hails Shubman Gill's Turnaround

Last Updated: Shubman Gill's stellar performance in India's 2-2 series draw in England silenced critics and proved his captaincy worth. Shubman Gill's marathon batting performance in India's admirable 2-2 series draw on English soil under his captaincy proved his naysayers wrong and turned him into India's 'huge positive' from their challenging tour of England, feels former batting coach Sanjay Bangar. In a magnificent achievement, Gill stood tall against the Ben Stokes-led Bazball juggernaut and produced scores of 147, 269, 161 and 103 in his astonishing series tally of 754 runs, only the second highest by an Indian after maestro Sunil Gavaskar's 774 during the 1971 tour of the West Indies. The prodigious talent vindicated the sustained backing provided by the team management and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, whose decision to appoint him the new Test captain had been treated with disdain by fans and experts focused on his mid-30s average. Responding in the best manner possible, Gill produced a mountain of runs and led India to remarkable wins at Edgbaston and The Oval. For Bangar, hard work put on solidifying his defensive technique aside, the century in the opening Test at Headingley calmed down the nerves of the young skipper and bolstered Gill's belief for the rest of the series. 'I think this was also the first instance when he was getting a full series in England and that helps as a batter. If you have a great start at Headingley itself, then it sort of quite down all the nerves down. Because India started so well, the number of batsmen who got runs in the very first Test match is extremely critical," Bangar said on ESPNcricinfo. 'Because you know scoring runs in England is very very valuable and if it comes right at the start of the series with 2 or 3 batsmen getting big scores means that the series is getting beautifully build up and that's where Shubman getting those big knocks in the first four innings of the series itself meant that entire questions marks about his captaincy affecting his batsmanship just vapourised out of thin air and he also became far far confident as a leader." 'Because if you look at his leadership in the first test match and right up to day five of the last Test match, there was a huge improvement. So clearly, Shubman Gill (as a captain) was a huge positive for the Indian team." With runs, Gill's decision-making as captain also evolved and improved. It was reflected by his sensible decision not to take the second new ball during the decisive hour of play on Day 5 at The Oval, where Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna got the old ball to hoop around and gave India a sensational six-run victory. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. I dream of playing in World Cup and Olympics: Manisha Kalyan

Guwahati, Aug 8 (PTI) Trailblazing Indian woman footballer Manisha Kalyan on Friday said she harbours the dream of playing in the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, a belief that has been bolstered by the national team's qualification for the AFC Women's Asian Cup in Australia next year. Manisha, the only Indian footballer to have played in the UEFA Champions League for women, was the cynosure of all eyes at the ASMITA under-13 league for girls at Nehru Stadium here on Friday. She said ASMITA is a 'rare platform for young girls to realise their football dreams." 'I am still dreaming of playing in the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics and after we qualified for the AFC Women's Asian Cup in Australia next year, our belief has been bolstered," the 23-year-old Manisha told the eight teams taking part in the Guwahati leg of ASMITA aimed at scouting talent at the grassroots level across India. 'You now have a platform like ASMITA and the more quality matches you play, the better you will get," she added. Manisha was present alongside two emerging talents from Assam — Rekha Kataki and Dosomi Rowtia. Both Rekha and Dosomi are products of the ASMITA league. While Dosomi has made it to the national camp, Rekha has captained NorthEast United Football Club in the Indian Women's League Division 2. 'Football is in the genes of North-East people. I grew up watching Bala Devi and now 11 of my colleagues in the senior national team are from this region. This only shows how much talent is present here. 'Maybe, five years from now, one of these kids will play for Assam and then India. Just work hard and only think about football. The ecosystem is surely developing and with government's support, we can only do better," said Manisha. Sports in north-east is a focus area for the sports ministry. Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya has already announced that a NorthEast-specific Games will be added to the Khelo India calendar. 'That will be a great addition. Not only football, this region is contributing to all sports and to give them more exposure is the right way to go," said Manisha, who has played professionally in Cyprus and Greece.
