Ratatan demands your attention, rhythmically
Sometimes, you tire of guns, zombies, and sequels; sometimes, you want to lead a bunch of tiny creatures and rhythmically march them into combat, letting the waves of confusion wash over you. That's what Ratatan is here to do.
It's the spiritual successor to Japan Studio and Pyramid's beloved Patapon rhythmic action series. However, you don't control Patapons, anymore, but Ratatans – which are completely different. These animal(ish) characters bark button-timing orders to their little squad of Cobun characters, who can launch attacks, assemble around the character you control, evade attacks and more. Inputting command sequences promptly also charges up the "Fever" bar, improving the effectiveness of those actions as well.
I haven't played the Patapon series, which stretched to three (!) games on the PSP, in years, and while the mechanics are similar, Ratatan is more elaborate, evolved and customizable. At its core, though, it's the same mechanic that demands you maintain the rhythmic input of commands and avoid attacks. It sounds simple enough, but corralling your Cobuns to follow you into battle and balance special attacks with avoiding damage felt like the gaming equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach. Also, it's 2025, so it's a roguelike flavor of rhythmic action. Of course.
You can select between several different animals-with-weapons-and-one-eye, and each comes with a different load-out of Cobun warriors. Some are melee fighters, while others are ranged attackers. You can also buy (or craft) more powerful weapons for each Cobun, adding to the sense of progression. I think that's needed, as Ratatan is a roguelike take on the Patapons that came before it. You'll dive into a portal and battle multiple waves of enemies, often picking up buffs or treasure at the end of each wave.
Each run is then typically capped off with a boss fight, either against a smarter, smaller enemy (and its underlings) or a more monstrous threat. During my demo, I was mostly getting beaten by a giant hermit crab, despite having picked up a very useful freezing attack buff during that run. I had to learn that lesson: You can pick up all the buffs you want, but you'll still need to nail the rhythm of attack and defense, while simultaneously keeping an eye on enemy attacks and the placement of both your character and your adorable Cobun fighters. (Ratatan's character designs are inspired by Nelnal, best known for their work on Pokémon and Deltarune .)
Further fight dynamics include a jump move and guard move that combines the Ratatan and Cobun movements to avoid game-ending damage. Fortunately, the early parts of the game didn't demand mastery of these.
There's an early Ratatan demo still available to play on Steam, but the build available at SGF 2025 seems much closer to a finished release. I was able to explore the game's hub world, filled with shops for upgrades, crafting and organizing your Ratatans' band of Cobun warriors. These parts felt a little confusing when served alongside the starting levels of the game, but should add longevity and interest when folded into the whole game.
Ratatan will launch later this year on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Alongside the big Steam sales, Steam Next Fest is one of the most popular events hosted on the PC gaming platform. This specific event comes around three times per year as a weeklong celebration full of exclusive demos for upcoming games, both big and small. Recommended Videos If you miss this event, you can always mark your calendars for the third and final Steam Next Fest of the year. That one is scheduled for the week of October 13 through 20, but there will be an entirely new set of demos for that event. Baby Steps We've waxed poetic about how if you only play one Steam Next Fest demo, make it Baby Steps, but would be remiss not to include it here as well. This is the truest 'walking simulator' there is. Each step is a struggle in Baby Steps as you need to carefully position and place each foot to move forward while maintaining balance. It's hard. It's frustrating. But, somehow, it's incredibly fun to stumble through. The characters and story also manage to evoke some genuine laughs along the way. Ratatan We all miss the Patapon series, but none more than a group of its original developers who Kickstarted its spiritual successor, Ratatan. Just like the original, this game melds rhythm game gameplay with side-scrolling action combat. This time, the gameplay is even expanded with some light RPG elements and 4-player co-op. This little taste of the visual style and killer music is more than enough to get you jazzed for the full release. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound We're living in a bit of a retro 2D revival period right now, and no game exemplifies that more than Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. Call us crazy, but we're more excited for this fast, flashy, and brutal side scroller than Ninja Gaiden 4. Even if you didn't grow up with the classic 2D games, the level of polish on display with this ninja adventure supercedes any sense of nostalgia. Eat the Rich Do we really need to say more? Eat the Rich is the perfect bit of catharsis in these trying times. This is a social deception game in the vein of an Among Us, but everyone involved is a billionaire participating in a game show where they must fight for their lives. You and 5 to 9 others will compete in various games for pennies and attempt to vote out whoever you think has the most. There are a lot of clever twists, but the core game is easy to understand and have fun with right away. MotionRec Puzzle games can get a little out of hand, especially in the indie scene. However, MotionRec is one of those prime examples of a simple concept given a ton of depth. The entire idea here is that the only way you can make it through a stage is to perform actions, rewind, and then play them back in different locations. This gets much more complex than it seems, but at just the right pace where you always feel like you are on the verge of figuring it out. Morbid Metal Anyone looking for a new stylish action game should dive right into Morbid Metal. You play as a robotic warrior who transforms into different characters mid-combo to take advantage of each one's weapons and moves. We're already addicted to putting together the longest, flashiest combos we can. The game is also a roguelite so the final game will offer endless hack-and-slash fun. Dead as Disco Finally, we're shouting out Dead as Disco. This game is essentially a mix between Sifu and DDR, where you need to time your punches and kicks to the beat. The best part? You can import any song you want to set the soundtrack to your own fight scene. There's a story to follow with some progression hooks, licensed tracks, brutal bosses, and even a co-op mode.

Mixtape sent a sherpa up a mountain to get the rights to use a song, and Grand Theft Auto has "nothing on our toilet paper tech"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Mixtape is a coming of age story that's a literal mixtape of music, gameplay and art styles. It focuses on three friends spending their last night together, with a perfect mixtape of music to accompany their final adventure as friends. It's also, according to creative lead Johnny Galvatron, got GTA beating toilet paper tech and getting the rights to use one song involved sending someone up a mountain. Wishlist Mixtape on Steam now Mixtape is odd to explain initially but instantly makes sense when you see it in action. "The music is a mixtape and so is the gameplay," says Galvatron. "There's everything from skateboarding to pulling slushies; there's an amazing level where your toilet paper a house. I just have to say, our toilet paper tech is second to none. The way you can toilet paper that house? I'm extremely proud of that. Grand Theft Auto? Nothing on our toilet paper tech." Even without the soundtrack it's an interesting clash of genres with a distinctive art style. But it is all about the music. "On their last night together [three friends] listen to this perfectly curated mixtape, containing music from DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure and many more," he explains. "Through the gameplay, through the music, you relive their finest hours." Getting a soundtrack with such a high pedigree wasn't easy either. "One of the things I enjoyed the most was collating the soundtrack and then getting the wheels in motion for how to get that music," admits Galvatron. "I'm not saying it was The Cure, but we were trying to get a song and one of the people that owned the copyright was up a mountain and we had to send a sherpa to go and find this guy so we could get the rights." (Founding member of The Cure, Lol Tolhurst, we're looking at you.) Mixtape is looking like a cinematic, arty take on the familiar whimsy of growing up, with Galvatron name-checking films like Dazed and Confused, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and even Wayne's World.
