BJP conspiring to hand over Vizag Steel to private players, says A.P. Congress chief Sharmila
The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is using a 'silent tactic' to destabilise the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL-VSP), ultimately trying to hand it over to private companies, said Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Y.S. Sharmila Reddy here on Wednesday.
She was in the city to launch an indefinite strike at the plant site in support of the terminated contract workers of the steel plant.
The government has conspired to destabilise the steel plant without allocating captive mines and even raw materials (iron ore). She said that while the plant once had 34,000 employees, that number has now dwindled to less than 20,000. 'The ₹11,400-crore revival package is a lie. The government has taken back ₹8,000 crore from the package in the form of various taxes and loan arrears. The government has conspired to slowly weaken the steel plant and finally give it to corporate companies like Adani,' said Ms.Sharmila.
The coalition government in the State and its parties Jana Sena and Telugu Desam Party have also betrayed Vizag Steel and have not considered their election promises made during the poll campaigns. They said that they would save the steel plant if elected to power. She accused both Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan of using the steel plant for their politics.
She said that both of them are acting as silent spectators while their partner, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is trying to privatise the steel plant with all his might against the wishes of lakhs of people of Andhra Pradesh, including its employees and their families.
City police late on Wednesday evening cleared the protest site where Ms. Sharmila Reddy launched an indefinite hunger strike in support of contract workers of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. They shifted her from the site as well as other prominent agitators in the steel plant area. This resulted in a tense situation. Police forces were deployed at the site to ensure that no untoward incidents take place from the agitators of the steel plant trade unions and their supporters representing political parties, including Congress.

Majithia's arrest a bold step against Punjab's drug menace: AAP
New Delhi: The arrest of former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday has sparked strong reactions from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers in the state, who termed the move a major step in the government's ongoing war against drugs. Reacting to the arrest, Punjab's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, told IANS, 'AAP, our national convener Arvind Kejriwal, and CM Bhagwant Mann had promised the people of Punjab in 2022 that we would eradicate the drug menace. This arrest is a step in that direction. Our fight against drugs is not influenced by political affiliations — whether someone belongs to any party or holds any position, they will not be spared if found guilty.' Dhaliwal pointed out that the peak of the drug crisis in Punjab was during 2007-2017, when the state was ruled by the SAD-BJP alliance. 'In November 2013, when Jagdish Bhola was arrested, he named Majithia, yet Badal Saheb remained silent. This silence spoke volumes,' he added. Echoing similar sentiments, Punjab's Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Lal Chand Kataruchakk, called the arrest 'historic'. 'Punjab is a holy land, and those who have poisoned it with drugs will face consequences. CM Bhagwant Mann has demonstrated strong political will by arresting Majithia,' he said. Kataruchakk also questioned the previous Congress-led government's inaction. 'Everyone in Punjab knows that Majithia is already facing NDPS charges. Why did Congress do nothing? What was their relationship with him?" he asked. Calling it a 'bold step' by CM Mann, the minister said families shattered by drug abuse have welcomed the move. 'If Majithia is innocent, the courts will decide. But retired DSP Jagdish Bhola had clearly said years ago that Majithia was their leader. That statement cannot be ignored,' he said. Majithia's arrest marks a significant moment in Punjab's anti-drug campaign, signalling that the CM Mann-led government is willing to act decisively against anyone, irrespective of political affiliations.

After Nilambur win, talks heat up over Kerala Congress (M)‘s return to UDF
Amidst reports that the United Democratic Front (UDF) working on a strategy to expand its base ahead of next year's Assembly elections, discussions over a potential return of Kerala Congress (M) to the Congress-led coalition are once again gaining momentum in Central Travancore. Buoyed by the Nilambur bypoll victory, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has officially confirmed the UDF's expansion plans. The Congress leaders in Central Travancore, on their part, have also expressed interest in bringing back the regional party, which is currently part of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). 'Some leaders have shown willingness to negotiate, but only in a personal capacity. Any formal discussions with Kerala Congress (M), however, will depend on the outcome of the upcoming local body elections,' said a senior party leader. According to him, the Congress is keen to rebuild a stronger version of the Kerala Congress, its long-time ally, which currently finds itself fragmented across political alliances. 'Only a united Kerala Congress can help absorb the eventual exit of some of its senior leaders,' he added, pointing to reports that veteran leader P.J. Joseph may not contest future elections. Combined with the elevation of Sunny Joseph as the KPCC president, the Congress regards a stronger Kerala Congress presence within the UDF as a means to bolster its ties with the Catholic Church, which remains an influential force in Central Travancore. 'But for any of this to materialise, Kerala Congress (M) must first respond positively to the feelers we've sent from time to time,' the leader added. When contacted, a senior Kerala Congress (M) leader admitted to a sense of confusion within party ranks about a potential shift. He, however, insisted that no formal discussions have taken place. 'People often ask us about such a move whenever speculation begins to circulate. We see this as a strategy by the UDF to create uncertainty among our workers. Nothing concrete has happened, especially since our party chairman currently occupies the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by the CPI(M),' he said.
