BBC News23-06-2025
Scotland's Hamish Stewart has navigated three of five rounds in the world 550's first attempt to qualify for the Wimbledon men's singles at Roehampton. The 25-year-old from Strathblane defeated former Davis Cup player Liam Broady 4-6 6-4 7-5 to become one of four British players granted wild cards into Wimbledon qualifying. And on Monday he saved a match point before progressing against Valentin Vacherot of Monaco when his opponent was forced to retire after slipping on the grass.Stewart was trailing 6-4 6-5 at the time to the 26-year-old who is currently ranked 267 in the world.
The Scot, who played Junior Wimbledon in his teens, next faces French 21-year-old Luca Van Assche.Van Assche, who has a career high of 63 but is currently 186, defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo, the world number 107 who was seeded three for the qualifying tournament, 7-6 6-2.Before beating 31-year-old Broady, who has slipped to 632 in the rankings, Stewart had defeated another Englishman, Ben Jones, ranked 620, 6-4 6-3.Playing mainly on the third-tier ITF Futures circuit, Stewart warmed up for Wimbledon qualifying with a 7-6 6-2 defeat by United States' world 191 Murphy Cassone in an attempt to qualify for the second-tier Challenger event in Ilkley. Should Stewart defy his ranking and oust Van Assche, he will need to then overcome either Swiss world 374 Leandro Riedi or Argentine 24th seed Federico Agustin Gomez, currently 134, to claim one of the 16 qualifying places for the main draw.Wimbledon begins on 30 June, with Scotland's Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie already in the main draw.

Wrexham's Ollie Palmer emotional after Hull City comeback

However Palmer came to the rescue, scoring two goals in 70 seconds during stoppage time, levelling the match at 3-3 and forcing penalties, with Wrexham advancing after five perfect spot kicks. After the match, an emotional Palmer, who joined Wrexham from Wimbledon in 2022, said 'all good things must come to an end'. He said: 'An emotional night, it was a fantastic reception coming on, but then going 3-1 down, but we've got a great spirit here and we dug deep like we've done at the Racecourse for many years and to come back into the game at 3-2, I felt we could get something out of the game, luckily we did and then we were clinical in the penalties. 'You look back over the years, the Dover 6-5, fighting to the end, the Barnet 7-5, fighting to the end, even the Sheffield United when we were unlucky, but we were digging deep in the FA Cup. We've just always done that here. The gaffers done a brilliant job of bringing players in over the years and moulding them in with the current dressing room and we can help them with the belief we have at the Racecourse with the fans behind us that we never give up and we didn't tonight. 'Although we were 3-1 down, I thought we were great tonight, they only made two or three changes from the weekend and we made 11. It's a credit to the squad and everyone involved in the football club. 'I worked hard along with my teammates to get this club to the Championship and for as long as I'm a Wrexham player I'll give everything for the shirt. All good things come to and end, but whilst I'm here you'll get performances like that in a Wrexham shirt.'

'Real worrying signs at Rangers' - what the pundits said

Former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell on BBC's Scottish Football PodcastIt was a sloppy performance. They got over the line, they got the job done and that's what they were there to do, make sure they progressed to the Champions League real worrying signs there for me. They were very sloppy in possession last night, gave the ball away, turned it over far too much and allowed the opposition, again, too many hurt them, they got beat, but ultimately it was job done. But they're going to have to improve and pretty quickly as striker Steven Thompson on BBC SportsoundThe job was done at Ibrox last week and this team didn't have enough quality to pull it back, another team might have. Plzen gave everything, they were dead on their feet at the end of the game and they threw everything they could at it. If they could just finish they might have had a football writer Stephen McGowan on BBC's Scottish Football Podcast I think the worry is the level of the opposition. Rangers rode their luck against Panathinaikos, they rode their luck against Victoria Plzen at times. Jack Butland is there to make saves so we can't have any quibbles with that. I think the concern is that if this Rangers team goes into the Champions League trying to pass the ball out from the back as you do they will be badly, badly exposed. And that's got to be a big worry just Rangers midfielder Ian McCall on BBC Sportsound They're through, that's all really you can say about it. I thought when Lyall Cameron got his first goal for Rangers they would have kicked on but the game kind of panned out like we thought it will have a chance in the next round but they'll need to defend a lot better.
