ESPN legend names shocking NBA Draft error that makes him want to 'scream'

Daily Mail5 hours ago

ESPN broadcaster Scott Van Pelt has named his biggest problem with the NBA Draft - newly selected players wearing the wrong team's hat moments after entering the league.
The problem comes with the chaos of the draft, with teams trading their picks and prospects with little time for the league office to adjust.
That leaves prospects getting a photo with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wearing the hat of a team they will not play a game for.
The problem happened a few times on Wednesday night, including 10th overall pick Khaman Maluach, who was visibly crying while wearing a Houston Rockets hat.
Maluach is headed to the Phoenix Suns, as the team acquired the pick in the blockbuster Kevin Durant trade.
'I'm gonna scream about the hat situation,' Van Pelt said on ESPN's airwaves during the 'SportsCenter' broadcast that immediately followed the first round.
'The league's too smart to have the moment that they've waited their whole life for be a picture in the wrong hat. It just doesn't make sense. I don't know why they can't fix it.'
The Washington Wizards selected Florida phenom Walter Clayton Jr. with the No 18 pick, only to deal him to the Utah Jazz moments later.
Clayton, and who he was traded for, Will Riley, both took photos with Silver in the wrong team's hat.
The move that thoroughly upset Van Pelt happened one more time during the first round with Liam McNeeley wearing a Suns hat despite the pick being traded to the Charlotte Hornets earlier in the evening.
The hat problem has seen historic moments, like both Kobe Bryant and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander donning Hornets hats on draft night, with neither basketball great playing for Charlotte in their careers.
That problem has rarely occurred in the NFL, with similar deals being made. However, league representatives have handed draftees their hats to wear seconds before shaking hands with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The NBA has not commented on the hat dilemma or how it plans to avoid the problem in the future.

Ange Postecoglou 'lined up for shock new job' just weeks after being sacked by Tottenham despite Europa League glory

Former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu might not have to wait long for his next job with Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC weighing up an approach to the Australian. Postecoglu was sacked shortly after Spurs won the Europea League thanks to victory over Man United in the final. Despite the trophy success, the former Celtic boss moved on in light of Spurs' poor league campaign which saw them finish 17th. Tottenham moved for Brentford manager Thomas Frank once they decided to look for alternatives to Postecoglu. Now, the Australian is in the frame to replace current LAFC boss Steve Cherundolo, according to the BBC. A former player at Bundesliga outfit Hannover, Cherundolo is set to leave California once the current MLS campaign concludes. American manager Steve Cherundolo will leave his role with LAFC at the end of the season The regular season comes to an end in October. As things stand, LAFC are sitting in the playoff spots and would consider hiring Postecoglu once any potential postseason run comes to an end. The American club recently took part in the Club World Cup, drawing with Flamengo but losing to Chelsea and ES Tunis in the group stage. This isn't the first job where Postecoglu's name has come up since he left North London. According to reports, the Australian has also been linked with Saudi Pro League sid Al-Ahli.

Erling Haaland hits 300th career goal as Man City make statement in Juventus thrashing

Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal as Manchester City thrashed Juventus 5-2 to finish top of Group G at the Club World Cup. Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Savinho – with a long-range stunner – were also on target as City produced an outstanding display despite both sweltering heat and a torrential downpour in Orlando on Thursday. City were pegged back after Doku's early opener when Ederson gifted a goal to Teun Koopmeiners but their lead was restored when Pierre Kalulu turned into his own net at the Camping World Stadium. Haaland, reaching a notable landmark in senior football for club and country, came off the bench to bundle in the third and Foden and Savinho made victory certain before Dusan Vlahovic's consolation. The result means City progress with a 100 per cent record from their three group games and should, in theory at least, have a more straightforward route through the knockout stages. Juve beat City 2-0 when the sides met in the Champions League in December but this was a far different side than the one that won just once in 13 games in a dismal run late last year. It was also a notable shift in gear from City after opening the competition with two straightforward wins against Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain. With Ballon d'Or winner Rodri making his first start since September, City were fluid and energetic. They made a fast start and Bernardo Silva had a header saved by the feet of Michele Di Gregorio before they took the lead in the ninth minute through Doku. Summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri slipped him in with a fine throughball and the Belgian tucked home after cutting inside Kalulu. Juve responded immediately and City failed to make the most of a reprieve after Vlahovic scuffed an effort wide. Ederson carelessly gave the ball away from the resulting goalkick and Koopmeiners rifled a shot past the Brazilian. City dealt well with the setback and Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri and Omar Marmoush all had attempts blocked. The pressure paid off in the 26th minute although they benefited from a huge stroke of luck as Kalulu diverted Matheus Nunes' ball past Di Gregorio. The ferocious sunshine gave way to heavy rain just before the break but City were not deterred as Savinho shot at Di Gregorio before the keeper pushed away further strikes from Ait-Nouri and Marmoush. Marmoush was replaced by Haaland at the interval and the Norwegian soon made an impact. Reijnders played in Nunes, who rolled a pass perfectly into the path of Haaland in front of goal. His connection was hardly the cleanest but such was his positioning he could hardly miss. Ederson denied Vlahovic as Juve sought a way back but Haaland created the opening for the fourth when his pass was picked up by Savinho and powered in by Foden from close range. Savinho added another in style when he thundered in a shot off the underside of the bar from distance after 75 minutes. Juve were well beaten but Vlahovic battled on and pulled one back six minutes from time after good work by Kenan Yildiz.

NFL suspends former Ravens kicker Justin Tucker for first 10 weeks of the season amid slew of off-field allegations

NFL star Justin Tucker has been suspended for the first 10 weeks of the upcoming season, following a slew of allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior. Tucker is a former kicker for the Baltimore Ravens, and received his suspension on Thursday, after being accused of violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The 35-year-old became a free agent after the Ravens released him last month in the aftermath of reports that he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by over a dozen massage therapists. Allegations against Tucker first emerged in January, when The Baltimore Banner reported that six massage therapists from eight Baltimore-area spas had shared their first-hand accounts with the outlet. The outlet reported that the NFL star repeatedly exposed himself to the masseuses, touched two of them with his exposed penis and also several times left what appeared to be ejaculate on the massage table. By February a total of 16 had come forward. All said Tucker's actions occurred between 2012 and 2016. Two of the spas said the player's behavior was so bad that he had been banned from the premises. After the initial allegations emerged, Tucker said that he has never received any complaints from a massage therapist or been told he was not welcome at a spa or other place of business. His 10-week suspension takes effect on August 26, which is roster cutdown day, and will be eligible for reinstatement on November 11. Tucker is still able to try out with and sign with a team. If he is signed, he can attend training camp and participate in preseason games. A five-time All-Pro, Tucker has played his entire 13-year career with Baltimore. He's considered one of the best kickers in NFL history, although 2024 was his worst season.
