Punjab FC secure AIFF U-15 Junior League title

Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) [India], May 28 (ANI): Punjab FC beat city rivals Minerva Academy FC 1-0 to clinch the AIFF U-15 Junior League 2024-25 title in the finals which was played at the JRD Tata Complex. A first half strike from Keisham Bikash Singh was enough for the club to secure their second youth league title of the season, after the Under-17 side won the AIFF U-17 Elite Youth League earlier this month, according to a release from Punjab FC.
The only goal of the match came in the 40th minute after Arambam Deepak Singh put in a low cross from the right wing which the Minerva defence failed to clear properly. The clearance deflected off Bikash Singh and found the bottom corner of the net. The Cubs put in a resolute defensive display from then on led by Khupkhanlian, Maibam Mangalsana Meitei and Prabhjot Singh and well marshalled by captain Jasmeet Singh from the centre of midfield. Prabhjot received the 'Player of the Final' award for his performance. Goalkeeper Augustasya Gupta pulled off some stunning saves to maintain the lead for his side.
Punjab FC edged past Parappur FC Kerala 1-0 in the quarterfinals with Jasmeet Singh scoring the winner. The Cubs dominated East Bengal in the semi-finals to win 5-1 and qualify for the finals. Keisham Bikash Singh scored a brace while Taibang Nganba Takhellambam, Prabhjot Singh and Arambam Deepak Singh scored the other goals for the winners.
Punjab FC had earlier qualified for the knockouts by finishing second in Group C of the final round. In the first match, the youngsters went down to Minerva Academy FC 1-4 but bounced back to beat Football 4 Change Academy, Manipur 4-1 and Jamshedpur FC 3-0 to take them to the knockout rounds of the league.
The Sandeep Alhan coached side finished second in the North Zone Regional Group stage to qualify for the Playoffs of the Final Round. They scored eight unanswered goals past Namdhari Sports Academy and Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools and beat Sri Dashmesh Martial Sports Academy 4-0. The only defeat came in a 1-6 loss to Minerva Academy FC. In the Playoffs, Punjab FC beat Kerala Blasters and Alchemy International FA, Bengaluru in identical 4-1 scores to qualify for the final round.
The youth teams of Punjab FC have been having a terrific season qualifying for the National Championship of all age group categories, winning the AIFF U-17 Elite Youth League earlier this month. The same side also clinched the Dream Sports Championship. The Sub-Junior team reached the semi-finals of the Final Round of the AIFF Sub-Junior League 2024-25 where they went down to FC Madras in the penalty shootout after both teams were tied 0-0 in regulation time. Khalid Jamil faces player shortages at India camp for CAFA Nations Cup, with clubs still holding back 11 key names. Newly-appointed India men's football head coach Khalid Jamil has been left with only 25 of the 35 players he has called for his first national camp ahead of the CAFA Nations Cup in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India face co-host Tajikistan on August 29 in Hisor to kick off the tournament. The camp began on August 16 with 22 players. Three additional players — Jamshedpur FC's Manvir Singh and Albino Gomes and new addition Muhammed Uvais from Punjab FC — joined the camp on Monday to take the numbers to 25, but Uvais was not in the original 35. Hence, after five training sessions across almost a week, 11 players are yet to join it. Mohun Bagan Super Giant did not release seven players — Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalengmawia Ralte, Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad, and Vishal Kaith. They believe it was not mandatory to do so since the tournament doesn't fall under the FIFA international window. East Bengal lost their Durand Cup semifinal match on Wednesday but it is still not clear if and when their three players selected for the camp — Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh and Naorem Mahesh Singh — will join the camp. NorthEast United have one player called up, Jithin MS, but the club has made it to the Durand Cup final to be played on Saturday. It needs to be seen how long after that he would be allowed to join the camp. Jamil is said to be keeping a keen eye on the Durand Cup, hoping the remaining players will be made available by their respective clubs. 'My doors are always open to every player. Some players may not be in the squad right now because I want to try a few other less-tested ones, but rest assured, we will bring our best available squad for the Asian Cup qualifiers," Jamil said. Meanwhile, there are four first-timers in the camp — defenders Uvais, Alex Saji, Sunil Benchamin, and forward Manvir Singh. Manvir, 24, said he has been waiting for this moment. 'I've waited six years to put on this jersey once again," he said in an All India Football Federation (AIFF) release. The last time he was a part of the national team setup was back in 2019, when he represented the India U19s in the AFC U19 Championship (now Asian Cup) Qualifiers. 'As a striker in India, I know how difficult it is to get a chance. I got that during the Durand Cup and gave my best," said Manvir. 'Now I feel like I have another chance, and I cannot afford to miss it. I have played under the coach (Khalid Jamil), and he knows my capabilities. I've just promised myself that if he gives me a chance, I have to take it, I must repay his trust." Army man Benchamin got his maiden national camp call-up at the age of 32. The last player from the Army to represent the Blue Tigers was forward Subir Sarkar 40 years ago. Meanwhile, Uvais' performance during the Durand Cup was enough to convince head coach Jamil. 'I think my performances with Punjab FC played a big role (in the call-up). It's surreal to be called up to the national camp. Rahane steps down as Mumbai captain ahead of Ranji Trophy
MUMBAI: Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday stepped down from his position as Mumbai captain ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, saying it is the right time to groom a new leader. The 37-year-old, who has amassed 14000 runs in 201 first-class matches, however, will continue to play as a batter in the team. The Ranji season begins on October 15 and Mumbai will be up against Jammu and Kashmir in their opening game. "Captaining and winning the championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour," Rahane wrote on his 'X' account. "With the new domestic season ahead, I believe it is the right time to groom a new leader, and hence, I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role. "I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player, and will continue my journey with MCA to help us win more trophies, looking forward to the season," he added. Under his captaincy, Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season with a victory over Vidarbha in the final. He also guided the team to triumph in the Irani Cup 2024-25, overcoming the Rest of India (ROI) side. Before these red-ball achievements, he led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2022-23, cementing his reputation as one of the finest captains in Indian domestic cricket.
