Prediction: This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock Could Be the Surprise Winner of 2025

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is undoubtedly one of the most diversified and expansive big-tech companies. The business is strong on many fronts, too. Sales grew 10% in the first quarter, excluding currency fluctuations, including a 17% jump in revenue from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services platform.
Trailing-12-month operating income was over 50% higher year over year as of the first quarter. By those metrics and more, it would seem Amazon's business is firing on all cylinders.

Yet the stock is down about 3% year to date as of this writing. Investors might want to take advantage of that since there are several reasons the artificial intelligence (AI) boom will help Amazon extend its growth businesses for years to come.
Amazon offers investors diversity and growth
Adjacent to its online retail empire, Amazon has Prime and other subscription services and related advertising on the platform. Its studios add content to the Prime streaming service. Its logistics segment has become a vast streamlined delivery operation, and AWS is a leading provider of on-demand cloud computing platforms. It has also started testing its Zoox self-driving service in six locations.
The company says its new Amazon Nova foundation model is growing rapidly, too. Nova can process text, images, and videos as prompts, helping customers use generative AI applications in various ways to make their own businesses more efficient and profitable.
The company also has its own Trainium2 advanced AI accelerator chips and architecture that make it easier for AWS customers to train models. Amazon also just launched its first Project Kuiper satellites that it hopes will provide broadband access to hundreds of millions without access today.
AI is helping Amazon streamline its own business
Amazon isn't just generating revenue and profit from AI. It's using it to streamline the company itself. The table below shows how revenue per employee has been steadily increasing in recent years.
Year 2024 2023 2022 2021 2020
Revenue per employee (in thousands) $414 $375 $326 $323 $368

That's certainly nice for a shareholder to see. But there's another important financial metric to which investors may not be paying enough attention. Or perhaps they are, but are not interpreting it correctly.
Cash flow is a tailwind, not a concern
That metric is free cash flow (FCF), which has declined by nearly 50% year over year when measured on a trailing-12-month (TTM) basis. The fact that FCF has declined, or even been negative in some quarterly periods, shouldn't be a concern for investors, though. Investments in property and equipment impact FCF. Those investments are going to drive future growth.
Recent examples of that capital spending include plans to invest over $5 billion in Taiwan for AWS to offer more cloud infrastructure in the region with a new data center construction project. Amazon also said it will invest $20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand cloud computing infrastructure and advance AI innovation.
That AWS investment will expand its AI infrastructure with multiple campuses. As part of this project, the company expanded an agreement with a power producer to purchase power directly from a Pennsylvania nuclear plant that will support the data centers without affecting local power needs.
The declining FCF might have spooked some investors in recent months. But investors who see what current investments could do for FCF should take this year's stock price decline as a gift. It has led to price-to-sales (P/S) and price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios that are both below their averages over the past year.
That makes now a good time to buy Amazon stock, because its AI investments can help it turn around from the year-to-date drop and be a surprising winner in 2025.

U.S. Senate is expected to pass a crypto bill without addressing Trump's investments

Brian Armstrong, left, Co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, and Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Circle, participate in the State of Crypto Summit, in New York, Thursday, June 12, 2025. (AP Photo/Richard Drew) WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate is expected to approve legislation Tuesday that would regulate a form of cryptocurrency known as stablecoins, the first of what is expected to be a wave of crypto legislation from Congress that the industry hopes will bolster its legitimacy and reassure consumers. The fast-moving legislation, which will be sent to the House for potential revisions, comes on the heels of a 2024 campaign cycle in which the crypto industry ranked among the top political spenders in the country, underscoring its growing influence in Washington and beyond. Eighteen Democratic senators have shown support for the legislation as it has advanced, siding with the Republican majority in the 53-47 Senate. If passed, it would become the second major bipartisan bill to advance through the Senate this year, following the Laken Riley Act on immigration enforcement in January. Still, most Democrats oppose the bill. They have raised concerns that the measure does little to address President Donald Trump's personal financial interests in the crypto space. 'We weren't able to include certainly everything we would have wanted, but it was a good bipartisan effort,' said Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, D-Md., on Monday. Alsobrooks, a co-sponsor of the bill, added, 'This is an unregulated area that will now be regulated.' Known as the GENIUS Act, the bill would establish guardrails and consumer protections for stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency typically pegged to the U.S. dollar. The acronym stands for 'Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins.' It's expected to pass Tuesday, since it only requires a simple majority vote — and it already cleared its biggest procedural hurdle last week in a 68-30 vote. But the bill has faced more resistance than initially expected. There is a provision in the bill that bans members of Congress and their families from profiting off stablecoins. But that prohibition does not extend to the president and his family, even as Trump builds a crypto empire from the White House. Last month, the Republican president hosted a private dinner at his golf club in Virginia with top investors in a Trump-branded meme coin. His family holds a significant stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto project that launched its own stablecoin, USD1. Trump reported earning US$57.35 million from token sales at World Liberty Financial in 2024, according to a public financial disclosure released Friday. A meme coin linked to him has generated an estimated US$320 million in fees, though the earnings are split among multiple investors. The administration is broadly supportive of crypto's growth and its integration into the economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week said the legislation could help push the U.S. stablecoin market beyond US$2 trillion by the end of 2028. Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase — the nation's largest crypto exchange and a major advocate for the bill — has met with Trump and praised his early moves on crypto. This past weekend, Coinbase was among the more prominent brands that sponsored a parade in Washington commemorating the Army's 250th anniversary — an event that coincided with Trump's 79th birthday. But the crypto industry emphasizes that they view the legislative effort as bipartisan, pointing to champions on each side of the aisle. 'The GENIUS Act will be the most significant digital assets legislation ever to pass the U.S. Senate,' Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott, R-S.C., said ahead of a key vote last week. 'It's the product of months of bipartisan work.' The bill did hit one rough patch in early May, when a bloc of Senate Democrats who had previously supported the bill reversed course and voted to block it from advancing. That prompted new negotiations involving Senate Republicans, Democrats and the White House, which ultimately produced the compromise version expected to win passage Tuesday. Alsobrooks said 'many, many changes' were made during negotiations and that 'it's a much better deal because we were all at the table.' Ahead of the vote on Tuesday, GOP Wyoming Sen. Cynthia Lummis said that she is 'okay' with where the stablecoin legislation has landed after negotiations. 'I'm not thrilled with it, but it's okay,' said Lummis, one of the bill's co-sponsors. Still, the bill leaves unresolved concerns over presidential conflicts of interest — an issue that remains a source of tension within the Democratic caucus. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has been among the most outspoken as the ranking member on the Senate Banking Committee, warning that the bill creates a 'super highway' for Trump corruption. She has also warned that the bill would allow major technology companies, such as Amazon and Meta, to launch their own stablecoins. If the stablecoin legislation passes the Senate on Tuesday, it still faces several hurdles before reaching the president's desk. It must clear the narrowly held Republican majority in the House, where lawmakers may try to attach a broader market structure bill — sweeping legislation that could make passage through the Senate more difficult. Trump has said he wants stablecoin legislation on his desk before Congress breaks for its August recess, now just under 50 days away. --- Joey Cappelletti, Mary Clare Jalonick and Alan Suderman, The Associated Press

Montreal invests $100K to lure research talent seeking to escape United States

The downtown skyline is seen Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, in Montreal. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan Remiorz The City of Montreal is investing $100,000 to lure scientists and researchers who want to leave the United States. In a news release, Mayor Valérie Plante says the 'current situation' in the U.S. is offering Montreal a unique opportunity to recruit global talent. U.S. President Donald Trump has tried to force change at universities he says have become hotbeds of liberalism and antisemitism, threatening to cut federal funding unless schools comply with his political agenda. In response, Plante's administration is teaming up with economic development agency Montréal International and the city's universities to attract top U.S. academic talent. Half of the investment will go to Montréal International to attract foreign investment, entrepreneurs and international workers to the city. The other $50,000 will fund five research grants for doctoral and post-doctoral students looking to come to Montreal. Over the weekend, four Quebec universities publicly called on the provincial and federal governments to step up to make the province and the country a landing spot for high-level researchers from around the globe. 'Today, we reaffirm our commitment to providing scientists and researchers in the United States with a dynamic, inclusive environment that fosters innovation,' Plante says in the news release.
