Bengal para teachers to write their financial demands on wall of CM's social media page

Hindustan Times09-07-2025
Kolkata, 'Para-teachers Oikyo Manch', a platform of part-time contractual teachers in state-run primary and upper primary schools, on Wednesday announced that they would post their demands for rise in pay scale in the wall of the official social media page of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Bengal para teachers to write their financial demands on wall of CM's social media page
Convenor of the representative apex platform of para-teachers Bhagirath Ghosh in a statement said a 'para teacher' gets ₹10,000 at the primary level and ₹13,000 at the upper primary level with which it is impossible to sustain a family having no other earning members.
He said as part of 'Mukhyo Mantrike Bolun' programme they will write their demands for rise in pay scale on the wall of the facebook page of CM.
"From today to July 11 we will write on the facebook page of the Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who will certainly consider our just demands. Despite working for hours in an educational institution and shouldering so much academic responsibilities in many primary-upper primary schools, we are being neglected," Ghosh said.
He said the association members will humbly request the CM to consider their demands "with a humane approach."
"After several demonstrations, sit-ins, fast and processions with begging bowls in past years, there has been no increase in our salary for seven years while government drivers and other contractual staff are getting salary as per the state notification on March 1, 2024. With our back to the wall, we are now forced to directly approach the CM through social media to draw the attention of the Chief Minister's Office ," Ghosh told PTI.
Para teachers are contractual employees working under projects like Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and after the project winds up they can be engaged under specific terms and conditions on a case-by-case basis.
They require a minimum of 12th grade pass and some form of teacher training like D EL, Ed or BEd.
A school education department official said the government is sympathetic to their demands but there is little scope in hiking the allowance considering the nature of their job.
"We have ensured that a para teacher after working for 10 years at least will receive ₹1 lakh upon reaching 60 years of age," he added.

Mamata slams Assam govt as gram pradhan gets NRC notice

1 2 Ghatal/Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned how the Assam govt was issuing NRC notices to Bengal residents, her statement coinciding with yet another Cooch Behar resident receiving the same during the day. This time, the recipient is an elected gram pradhan of Mathabhanga. "How is the Assam govt issuing such notices? NRC notices are being sent to Rajbanshis, Seal families, Matuas — they are being harassed. Bengali workers are being killed in Maharashtra. They are being tortured in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Many are still jailed in Gurgaon," she said. "How dare they say there is no language called Bengali? I have no problem with speaking other languages — I respect them all. But it is unacceptable if someone is not allowed to speak in his mother tongue or if someone speaking in Bengali is called Bangladeshi or if someone with valid documents is pushed back to Bangladesh," she said. TMC posted the notice on its social media handles, and in Bengali. "Another NRC notice! This time targeting Cooch Behar! The Foreigners Tribunal in Nalbari, Assam, has summoned the elected head of Hazrahat-II panchayat. They have been asked to appear on Aug 27 to prove their 'citizenship'. Is Bengal under Assam's jurisdiction?" it said. The CM said in the name of SIR, there was a veiled attempt to implement NRC. "No one should be left out of the voters' list. Everyone should get themselves enlisted. We will not tolerate the removal of genuine citizens from voter rolls and labelling them as Bangladeshis. Their EPICs were issued by ECI. It was the govt of India which issued Aadhaar cards," she added. "Someone's parents passed away long ago and now they are demanding their birth certificate. This is a conspiracy by the double-engine govt — the govt of India along with the Election Commission of India. The names of as many as 7 lakh Hindus were removed in Assam," warned CM Banerjee. Didi assures migrants of help CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged migrant workers to return to Bengal, promising that once they registered on notified portal and declared their wish to return, the state would ensure that they receive all help. "Just say that you require help and we will ensure that we bring you under social welfare schemes. We will also try to help you through direct transfers," she said in Keshpur after taking stock of flood situation.

Himachal HC quashes Section 163-A of states Land Revenue Act

Last Updated: Shimla, Aug 5 (PTI) In a major setback to encroachers on government lands, the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Tuesday struck down the section 163-A of Himachal Pradesh Land Revenue Act 1954, allowing regularisation of encroachments on government lands, terming the section as unconstitutional. A division bench of the High Court consisting of Justice Vivek Thakur and Justice Bipin Chander Negi ruled that the 'Section 163-A of HP Land Revenue Act is manifestly arbitrary and unconstitutional and as a consequence the section and the rules framed there under the said section are quashed". Putting an end to long litigation, the judgment directed the state government to initiate eviction proceedings expeditiously against all such encroachments that were to be covered under the section 163A, preferably on or before February 28, 2026. The dimensions of the encroachments can be measured from the reply of the government which said that there were approximately 57,549 cases of encroachment covering an area of about 1,23,835 bighas of government land. The encroached government land is about 10,320 hectares and in terms of the rules framed under the impugned provision, 1,67,339 applications were received for regularisation up to August 15, 2002 and taking into account the magnitude of encroachments, the high court directed the state government to consider an amendment in the law pertaining to 'criminal trespass". The HC also instructed the advocate general to transmit the copy of the judgment to the chief secretary of the sate government and all concerned with immediate compliance. Since 1983, successive governments issued various notifications for regularisation of encroachments and the July 4, 1983 notification permitted regularisation up to five bighas on a nominal fee of Rs 50 per bigha. Section 163-A was introduced in 2002 during the first tenure of the then chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to frame rules for regularising encroachments, with the stated objective of helping small and marginal farmers. However, the High Court on Tuesday ruled that the provision was violative of Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before law and attempted to legitimise illegal acts. 'The impugned provision is in fact legislation for a class of dishonest persons and equality cannot be claimed in illegality," the judgment said. Inaugural India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue held in Delhi

Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The inaugural edition of India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was held here on Tuesday with an aim to discuss security perspectives and further bolster bilateral cooperation, officials said. The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), defence ministry, Amitabh Prasad and Head of International Branch, Ministry of Defence, New Zealand, Kathleen Pearce. 'Both nations expressed satisfaction at the ongoing defence cooperation and identified means to enhance the existing areas of collaboration, especially in the fields of training, capability building, defence industry, maritime security and multinational cooperation," the Indian defence ministry said. The co-chairs also articulated steps in the direction of emerging areas of cooperation and issues pertaining to global commons, officials said. 'The Indian side complimented New Zealand for its successful command of CTF-150 in which five Indian Navy personnel were also deputed as staff. Both sides also discussed ways to build up ongoing White Shipping Information Exchange towards enhancement of information sharing," the defence ministry said in a statement. India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was constituted under an MoU signed between the two countries in March 2025, a significant milestone in intensifying defence relations. India and New Zealand engagements span a wide spectrum of cooperation – political, defence and security collaboration, capacity building and education. These developments reflect mutual trust, shared democratic values, the deep-rooted people-to-people ties and a mutual love for cricket that binds both nations. As part of the official visit to India, Pearce also called on Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on August 4.
