Man Utd 'agree deal' for popular star to stay after nine Old Trafford exits

Manchester United have already announced a number of Old Trafford exits this summer but could soon see an out-of-contract start extend his stay at the club under Ruben Amorim Manchester United have agreed a deal to extend Tom Heaton's stay at the club, according to reports. The 39-year-old goalkeeper has made just three appearances for the Red Devils in a four-season spell. Heaton's contract is set to expire at the end of the month but the parties are set to agree an extension of a further year in the coming days. The shot-stopper is seen as a 'highly valued part of the goalkeeping group and wider squad'. ‌ United have already announced the exits of senior stars Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the close of their contracts this summer. The club confirmed on Monday that they were in talks with Heaton over a fresh deal. ‌ The Old Trafford side also announced the departure of academy players however. Hubert Graczyk, Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, Tom Myles, James Nolan and Tom Wooster have all been released. Heaton is in his second spell with United having come through the club's academy. The veteran went on loan to Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queen's Park Rangers, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers before departing the club to join Cardiff in 2010. The goalkeeper made his name in a stint with Burnley between 2013 and 2019 and made 200 appearaces. After a two-season stay at Aston Villa, Heaton returned to United in 2021. A coaching position has been touted for the ex-Clarets star and that is said to be a long-term option. For now Heaton's services are deemed to be required around the squad in a goalkeeping group that includes Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Last summer, Heaton was called upon by England boss Gareth Southgate during the Three Lions' campaign at Euro 2024 in Germany. The veteran was tasked with being a training goalkeeper to assist Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson. ‌ Speaking after extending his deal by a single year last July, Heaton revealed he was relishing his role at the club. "I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club," Heaton told club media. "I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead. "In addition to on the pitch, I'm learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season." Sporting Lisbon boss breaks silence on Viktor Gyokeres' future - with the Man United target 'furious over the Portuguese club's U-turn on his £84m release clause'

Sporting Lisbon boss Rui Borges refused to give too much away when asked about Viktor Gyokeres' future on Tuesday. Gyokeres, 27, has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent days, with the Red Devils moving ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for his signature. The Swedish striker appeared to bid farewell to Sporting's fans after completing a domestic double with the club last month, but he remains with the Portuguese outfit for now. Borges attended an event on Tuesday to mark the 99th anniversary of provincial team Sport Clube de Mirandela - the club where his football journey began - and was quizzed on Gyokeres, but remained tight-lipped. 'Gyokeres? Sporting's future begins on July 1st,' Borges told reporters. 'That's all I can say and today I'm here to, above all, salute this tribute that was paid to me. That's all. I'm on vacation, I'm not here to talk about that.' Borges is not interested in talking about the future of Gyokeres for now, but the player himself is reportedly furious over how Sporting are handling his potential exit. Gyokeres has a €100m (£84m) release clause in his Sporting contract, but he is understood to have reached a gentleman's agreement with the club at the start of the season over a reduced asking price. The forward was promised that he could leave Sporting this summer for €60m (£51m), plus €10m (£8m) in add-ons, to take the overall transfer fee down to £59m. However, according to Portuguese outlet Record, Sporting's board are now seeking in the region of €80m (£67m) before allowing Gyokeres to move on. He is believed to be livid with Sporting's U-turn and feels they have failed to deliver on their promise to him. Gyokeres has responded by removing any reference to Sporting on his Instagram account, having also got rid of any mention of Sweden and Nike. United failed to get a deal over the line in the 'special' transfer window that shut on Tuesday evening, but they could return for Gyokeres when the window re-opens on later this month.

Man United star 'agrees new contract' to remain at the club just weeks before his deal was due to expire

A Manchester United star has verbally agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club into his 40s, according to a report. The Red Devils are looking to rebuild their squad this summer on the back of a dismal season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim. They have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, and remain in negotiations to make Brentford 's Bryan Mbeumo their second signing of the summer. But they will also have to rely on members of their current squad, despite Amorim branding it the worst side in United's history during a period of struggle last season. And they appear to have tied down one member of that squad for at least another year - though not a vital member of the playing team. Tom Heaton, who has been one of the club's reserve goalkeepers since rejoining them in 2021, has, according to The Sun, verbally agreed a new deal that will see him remain at Old Trafford beyond his 40th birthday. Heaton graduated from United's academy, initially joining them from Wrexham in 2002 as a teenager and going onto join up with the first team. He never actually played a competitive game for the side, though, and moved on in 2010, joining Cardiff City. The 39-year-old also played for the likes of Bristol City and Aston Villa before his United return, but is most famed for playing 200 games for Burnley between 2013 and 2019. United released 10 players on Monday, though said they were in discussions with Heaton over a new contract. The club wrote Heaton was 'included on the list of free transfers, however the club remains in discussions with the goalkeeper about a new deal that would see him remain part of the squad for the 2025/26 season. 'Like (Jonny) Evans, Heaton is an Academy graduate in his second spell at the club, after returning in 2021 and going on to make three first-team appearances, as well as being a highly valued part of the goalkeeping group and wider squad.'
