Man Utd 'agree deal' for popular star to stay after nine Old Trafford exits
Manchester United have already announced a number of Old Trafford exits this summer but could soon see an out-of-contract start extend his stay at the club under Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have agreed a deal to extend Tom Heaton's stay at the club, according to reports. The 39-year-old goalkeeper has made just three appearances for the Red Devils in a four-season spell.
Heaton's contract is set to expire at the end of the month but the parties are set to agree an extension of a further year in the coming days. The shot-stopper is seen as a 'highly valued part of the goalkeeping group and wider squad'.
United have already announced the exits of senior stars Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the close of their contracts this summer. The club confirmed on Monday that they were in talks with Heaton over a fresh deal.
The Old Trafford side also announced the departure of academy players however. Hubert Graczyk, Jack Kingdon, Sam Murray, Tom Myles, James Nolan and Tom Wooster have all been released.
Heaton is in his second spell with United having come through the club's academy. The veteran went on loan to Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, Queen's Park Rangers, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers before departing the club to join Cardiff in 2010.
The goalkeeper made his name in a stint with Burnley between 2013 and 2019 and made 200 appearaces. After a two-season stay at Aston Villa, Heaton returned to United in 2021.
A coaching position has been touted for the ex-Clarets star and that is said to be a long-term option. For now Heaton's services are deemed to be required around the squad in a goalkeeping group that includes Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
Last summer, Heaton was called upon by England boss Gareth Southgate during the Three Lions' campaign at Euro 2024 in Germany. The veteran was tasked with being a training goalkeeper to assist Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
Speaking after extending his deal by a single year last July, Heaton revealed he was relishing his role at the club.
"I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club," Heaton told club media. "I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead.
"In addition to on the pitch, I'm learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season."

Premier League trio in Jadon Sancho transfer battle as Man Utd make decision
Jadon Sancho remains likely to leave Manchester United this summer after failing to secure a transfer to Chelsea and Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford Jadon Sancho is commanding interest from three Premier League clubs and looks set to be on the move once again this summer. Ruben Amorim has decided the England international will not be part of his first team squad and is said to have no plans to integrate him into the set-up. Chelsea made their decision to not make Sancho's move permanent official as they named their Club World Cup squad on Wednesday. The Blues were forced to stump up £5million to send the winger back to United after they had satisfied condititions to make the deal permanent. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle are all keeping tabs on the 25-year-old's situation as the Red Devils look to facilitate an exit. Unai Emery's side prefer a loan deal for the ex-Borussia Dortmund star, having taken Marcus Rashford on a temporary basis in January. United would prefer a sale to bolster their funds amidst a busy summer of rebuilding, as they attempt to replenish Amorim's squad. Already the club have spent £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and a significant fee is expected to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Sancho would see a return to Champions League action if a move to Newcastle or Tottenham was completed. It is claimed the sides both see Sancho as 'a strong option' as they attempt to build squads to battle on multiple fronts in 2025/26. Sancho made 45 appearances as he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and qualify for the Champions League. But his five goals and 10 assists were not enough to convince Enzo Maresca's side to extend his stay. The player, who arrived at Old Trafford at United from Dortmund in a £73m deal, is also finding interest from Europe however. Dortmund have asked to be kept up to date on any developments over his future. And Chelsea's interest in Jamie Gittens could prompt some action, though the German side have already signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland this summer. Gittens is said to have already agreed terms with Chelsea, but the Blues could not make a deal with the Bundesliga giants in time for the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen if they return with another offer. Sancho's salary could prove problematic as United attempt to offload their unwanted star. It means another loan could be considered for the attacker, who has already enjoyed two spells away from the club.
