Premier League trio in Jadon Sancho transfer battle as Man Utd make decision

Daily Mirrora day ago

Jadon Sancho remains likely to leave Manchester United this summer after failing to secure a transfer to Chelsea and Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford
Jadon Sancho is commanding interest from three Premier League clubs and looks set to be on the move once again this summer. Ruben Amorim has decided the England international will not be part of his first team squad and is said to have no plans to integrate him into the set-up.
Chelsea made their decision to not make Sancho's move permanent official as they named their Club World Cup squad on Wednesday. The Blues were forced to stump up £5million to send the winger back to United after they had satisfied condititions to make the deal permanent.

Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle are all keeping tabs on the 25-year-old's situation as the Red Devils look to facilitate an exit. Unai Emery's side prefer a loan deal for the ex-Borussia Dortmund star, having taken Marcus Rashford on a temporary basis in January.

United would prefer a sale to bolster their funds amidst a busy summer of rebuilding, as they attempt to replenish Amorim's squad. Already the club have spent £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and a significant fee is expected to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
Sancho would see a return to Champions League action if a move to Newcastle or Tottenham was completed. It is claimed the sides both see Sancho as 'a strong option' as they attempt to build squads to battle on multiple fronts in 2025/26.

The former Borussia Dortmund star, who has also drawn interest from his former club, enjoyed a steady if unspectacular loan at Chelsea last term. Sancho made 45 appearances as he helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and qualify for the Champions League.
But his five goals and 10 assists were not enough to convince Enzo Maresca's side to extend his stay. The player, who arrived at Old Trafford at United from Dortmund in a £73m deal, is also finding interest from Europe however.
Dortmund have asked to be kept up to date on any developments over his future. And Chelsea's interest in Jamie Gittens could prompt some action, though the German side have already signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland this summer.

Gittens is said to have already agreed terms with Chelsea, but the Blues could not make a deal with the Bundesliga giants in time for the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen if they return with another offer.
Sancho's salary could prove problematic as United attempt to offload their unwanted star. It means another loan could be considered for the attacker, who has already enjoyed two spells away from the club.

Pep Guardiola looking forward to Club World Cup despite Man City workload fears

The influential Spanish midfielder may also have been making a point about the expanded Champions League format, but the additional tournament, shoehorned into a period normally kept free for rest, was clearly a bone of contention. 'I think we are close to that,' said the Ballon d'Or winner when asked if players could stage industrial action over their seemingly ever-growing fixture commitments. 'If it keeps this way, (there) will be a moment that we have no other option, but let's see.' As the season then unfolded, with City suffering an uncharacteristic blip – failing to put up a strong defence of the Premier League title they had won for the previous four years and exiting the Champions League before the last 16 – it looked like they would need the break to regroup. Yet as the time has neared, no doubt helped by the announcement the winners of FIFA's latest showcase event could pocket close to £100million, the tone has changed. If Pep Guardiola has reservations about fixture congestion, injuries and a lack of preparation time for next season – all more than hinted at over the past season – he is now keeping them to himself. 'This is a very, very serious competition,' the City manager said recently with typical vigour. 'In the summer, the whole world will be watching this. 'A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going there to win it.' City were the last team to win the Club World Cup in its old guise in December 2023, but that only required them to win two games in the space of four days. The new quadrennial tournament is a different proposition, featuring 32 teams and lasting a month, following a format used for the traditional World Cup. City have been placed in Group G for this summer's edition in the United States alongside Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. Their regular Champions League foes Real Madrid could lie in wait in the first knockout round. Other notable sides involved include newly-crowned European champions Paris St Germain and the beaten finalists Inter Milan, Premier League rivals Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. There are 12 European entrants in total with six from South America, six from South America, four each from Africa and Asia, five from North America and one from Oceania. Brazil has the most participants of any one country with four. The tournament, which begins on June 14, has had plenty of detractors, particularly from Europe, and its success remains to be seen. For City the message is now clear, however. They would rather be involved than not. 'It's an honour,' Guardiola said. 'It means in the last seasons we have done really well. It's a new competition for us and I'm looking forward to it.'

F1 star suffers Canadian GP nightmare as passport and computer stolen by thieves

Formula 1 star Gabriel Bortoleto is chasing his first points of the season in Montreal but was hit by significant disruption when having dinner in Switzerland days before the GP Formula 1 star Gabriel Bortoleto saw his preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix disrupted by a theft which deprived him of his passport. The thieves are understood to have struck when he was in Switzerland in the lead-up to the race, with a computer also stolen. Bortoleto, 20, is in his first season as an F1 driver. He joined Sauber ahead of the 2025 season and has yet to score a point, but a 12th place finish in Spain in May was his best result to date. ‌ The youngster is still able to take part in Canada, but it was touch-and-go-for a while. Thieves broke into his car and stole documents, some of which have been recovered, but he was forced to travel to Canada with a second passport as he aimed to minimise the disruption. ‌ 'I had gone to dinner one day in Switzerland and they ended up opening the car and taking my backpack," Bortoleto told Brazilian media. "I had my passports, everything inside, my computer, all my running gear,' Bortoleto described. "It was chaos, but we managed to find the guy. Everything worked out in the end, I have my passports. We didn't find everything, but we did find some things," While Bortoleto is still waiting for his first point of the season, team-mate Nico Hulkenberg impressed with a fifth-place finish in Spain. The German now sits 11th in the drivers' standings wit 16 points, having opened the season with seventh place at the Australian Grand Prix. Last year, Sauber were represented at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit by Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas, with both finishing outside the points in Canada. The 2024 race was won by eventual world champion Max Verstappen, with Lando Norris and George Russell completing the podium. 'It's a street circuit, so I think that always makes the weekend a little bit more competitive – I don't know if that's the right word. I think it makes mistakes a little bit less acceptable,' Bortoleto told reporters ahead of the 2025 race in Montreal. ‌ This year's Canadian Grand Prix will also see Lance Stroll return to action after missing out in Barcelona. The Aston Martin driver withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix after qualifying, and has undergone a medical procedure on his wrist ahead of his home GP in Canada. 'I started to feel some pain in my wrist and hand a couple of months ago, but I wanted to keep racing,' Stroll said. 'However, the discomfort just became too much, and we made the decision to have medical intervention. "Naturally, I was disappointed to miss the race in Barcelona but it was the right call at the time, and I'm looking forward to getting back to racing this weekend… [The wrist's] feeling good.'

England star to join Ronaldo on Club World Cup duty as he mulls over next move

Newcastle frontman Callum Wilson will be part of DAZN's punditry line-up as the broadcaster gears up for the Club World Cup with Ronaldo also part of their roster of talent Newcastle's Callum Wilson will be part of a Club World Cup punditry panel that includes the legendary Ronaldo as DAZN build their line-up. BBC's Kelly Somers is among the hosts for the competition. The 32-team tournament begins with Egyptian outfit Al-Ahly taking on the Lionel Messi 's Inter Miami in Miami and insight will be provided by the former England striker, who will rub shoulders with the Brazil icon and German World Cup winner Sami Khedira. ‌ DAZN has exclusive rights to the month-long competition, which will include more than 60 games as Manchester City and Chelsea fly the flag for the Premier League. Former Chelsea stalwart John Obi Mikel, who has his own podcast, will also be part of the punditry panel. ‌ Wilson faces an uncertain future at St James' Park with his contract expiring on June 30. Talks continue over a possible extension but during the summer the striker will try his hand at punditry. Another former England international in Andros Townsend will be part of DAZN's coverage with former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel offering insight in his homeland. Last December DAZN and FIFA announced their partnership as they were awarded the exclusive worldwide rights to the Club World Cup - which is the first time a single broadcaster was given exclusive rights to a men's international club tournament. Wilson left the pitch in tears after Newcastle qualified for the Champions League on the final day in what could prove to be the striker's last game for the club. Wilson was serenaded by Newcastle fans after several years of service. When asked about Wilson's future, Howe said: "Let's wait and see. We will sit down with his representatives." He also claimed: "I'm in a position where I don't know what's going to happen. You never know going into any summer with transfer activity, ins or outs you never know the numbers. You might have a thought of what could happen but without a doubt this could be the last time that the supporters see some of the players. I'd be saying the same every season - in life there's no guarantees and change is a natural process." ‌ The 33-year-old clearly has no plans to leave the game and confessed that, even though he appreciated the brilliance of Alexander Isak, he was still frustrated that the Swede was starting ahead of him. Wilson said recently: "I know my worth and I know my value and I'm still so hungry inside that even though I know Alex [Isak] is scoring goals, I'm still frustrated when the team sheet comes out and I'm not starting so I know I'm not ready to leave football yet."
