Hartselle man out on bond for burglary arrested for second-degree rape
May 17—A 27-year-old Hartselle man was charged with three counts of second-degree rape after investigators say he had sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old on three separate occasions, according to an affidavit.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office said they arrested Benjamin Preston Bolan on Tuesday at an apartment on Mitwede Street in Hartselle and initially held him in lieu of a $300,000 bond. On Wednesday, Morgan County District Judge Stephen Brown revoked that bond after finding probable cause that Bolan committed new crimes while out on release for a previous third-degree burglary charge, according to court records.
On April 26, an investigator with the Sheriff's Office contacted the Department of Human Resources after he received a report from the father of a 13-year-old female that his daughter had sex with a male over the age of 21, according to the affidavit.
The investigator conducted a forensic interview with the victim on May 7.
"She disclosed during the forensic interview that the male subject's name was (Ben) and they had sex at three different locations," the affidavit said. "Two of the locations were at her mawmaw's house and her mimi's house. The third location is unknown."
The affidavit said during the third encounter, Bolan parked down the street and the victim walked to his vehicle and had sex inside.
"(The victim) disclosed that every time he showed up, they smoked weed and had sex and he knew she was 13 years old and he could get in trouble," the affidavit said.
On May 8, the victim and her mother came to the Sheriff's Office and gave the investigator a picture of the victim and Bolan, and he confirmed Bolan as a suspect from the picture on his driver's license.
"(The victim) also identified Bolan in a photo lineup and the vehicle he was driving," the affidavit said.
Bolan also faces other charges.
In 2024, Bolan was charged with third-degree robbery. An affidavit said the owner of a storage unit in Hartselle made a report on Oct. 31 that the unit had been broken into and multiple items including a guitar, amplifier, and power tools were stolen. On Nov. 4, a Morgan County Sheriff's deputy went to Pawns of Decatur and recovered a receipt showing that Bolan had pawned the items from the storage unit on July 1 for $650 and "then went back to get the pawned items on July 22."
He was arrested and taken to Morgan County Jail on Nov. 6, but was released the same day on $2,500 bail, according to court records.

ICE, sheriff's office raid two nail salons in Potsdam
Jun. 10—POTSDAM — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office raided two nail salons in Potsdam on Tuesday morning. Top Nails in the SeaComm Plaza and Paint Lab at 200 Market St. were closed on Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses who saw the Top Nails raid said there were four or five cars, one a marked sheriff's office car and the others dark-colored SUVs with no insignias. At least one person who was involved in the raid was wearing camouflage with an ICE armband and at least one other was wearing a uniform identifying them as a sheriff's deputy. Witnesses said they were armed with pistols that were holstered and the operation lasted about an hour. Witnesses to the Paint Lab raid said there were several vehicles, all unmarked, except for the sheriff's office vehicle, and the ICE agents were not wearing face coverings or sunglasses. Witnesses said ICE agents also went into the Save A Lot in the same plaza. The sheriff's office sent a statement to the press saying there is "an increased law enforcement presence in several locations throughout St. Lawrence County." Officials from the sheriff's office did not immediately answer a request for more details, including if any other locations were raided. The statement says the sheriff's office and Homeland Security Investigations are "actively working on a victim centered investigation." "As this investigation is very active, there [are] no further updates available at this time," the statement reads, referring reporters to the HSI Office of Public Affairs, which did not immediately return an email seeking comment.

Metro Detroit man, 62, accused of sexually assaulting teen who went missing for a month
A Dearborn Heights, Michigan, man is charged after investigators found a missing 16-year-old girl inside his home, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Kamal Abou Darwiche, 62, is charged with child sexually abusive activity, delivery of marijuana to a minor and harboring a runaway. Darwiche will be arraigned at a later date. The 16-year-old was reported missing on March 14, 2025, after running away from the Vista Maria facility. Her whereabouts were last confirmed via security video on March 17. At the time, police determined she met with two men, one of whom has been identified as a man in his 30s. The teen was located more than a month later on April 23 at Darwiche's home on Inkster Road in Dearborn Heights. Darwiche was taken into custody. Prosecutors allege that Darwiche kept the teen at his home between March 17, 2025, and April 23, 2025, and sexually assaulted her. Police believe the teen met the 62-year-old man randomly. Authorities say more evidence will be presented during a preliminary examination hearing.

Judge in Hockey Canada sexual assault trial sets verdict date for July 24
LONDON, Ont. – Justice Maria Carroccia set July 24 as the decision date in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial. During Tuesday's proceedings, in which the defense continued closing arguments, Carroccia said verdicts would be delivered in person on that date. Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dubé and Cal Foote are all charged with sexual assault after an alleged incident in June 2018. The complainant — a woman known as E.M., whose identity is protected by a publication ban — has said she was sexually assaulted over the span of several hours in a London, Ont., hotel room. The players were in town for a Hockey Canada event celebrating their gold medal at the 2018 World Junior Championship. Advertisement McLeod is also facing a second charge for 'being a party to the offense' for what the Crown has asserted was his role 'assisting and encouraging his teammates to engage sexually' with E.M. All five players have pleaded not guilty at the commencement of the trial, which is in its eighth and final week. — The Athletic's Kamila Hinkson contributed reporting remotely from Montreal.
