Dodgers make one thing clear about Shohei Ohtani's pitching return timeline after latest step
Ohtani threw a third simulated game at Petco Park on Tuesday as he works his way back from his 2023 elbow surgery.
Despite taking an important step, Dodgers manager David Roberts didn't want anyone to raise their expectations too high, telling reporters the chances of Ohtani pitching in a game before the All-Star break was 'north of zero.'

'It's tempting,' Roberts said. 'I'm sure Shohei is tempted to just rip the Band-Aid off and get into a big league game, but I think we're doing a good job of trying to be patient.'
During this outing, the righty from Japan threw 44 pitches in three innings of work. According to pitching coach Mark Prior, his fastball sat in the mid-90s.
By the end of the session, Ohtani had six strikeouts.
'You start getting close to 44, you start getting into the 60- and 70-pitch range, then you can start envisioning and dreaming about being in a game,' Prior told reporters, according to MLB.com. 'Because then you know that he has the volume under him to go out there and at least take down multiple innings in a real game.'
This latest outing for Ohtani marks a significant increase in workload. In the last simulated game, his pitch count only reached 29.
Roberts is not going to push the superstar to the mound as quickly as possible.
'It certainly doesn't have to be a full buildup,' Roberts told reporters, 'because anything he can give us is certainly additive.'
Nevertheless, the Dodgers might need Ohtani back on the mound due to the state of their pitching staff.
Los Angeles has not had luck keeping their starters healthy this season. Right now, they have eight starting pitchers on the injured list. That has led to the Dodgers having only 316 innings recorded by starting pitchers, which is the fourth-lowest in the MLB.
Star Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki are among those on the IL.

Luckily for the Dodgers, Snell threw his first bullpen session since being injured in April, Glasnow threw his third bullpen session, and Sasaki is continuing to do pitch and catch.
If the Dodgers' starting rotation can return to full health and add a fresh Ohtani, that could make the rotation scary again.

Second game of scheduled doubleheader between Brewers and Cubs postponed by inclement weather
CHICAGO -- The second game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs was postponed Monday night due to thunderstorms in the area. It will be made up Tuesday afternoon as part of a day-night twinbill at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee opened the five-game series with a 7-0 victory Monday afternoon, thanks to six innings of one-hit ball from All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each hit a solo home run to lead the Brewers to their 23rd victory in 28 games. At 79-45, the Brewers have the best record in the majors. Milwaukee leads the second-place Cubs, who have lost six of 10, by nine games in the NL Central. Matthew Boyd (11-6, 2.46 ERA) is set to pitch the first game Tuesday for the Cubs, and Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44) is probable to start the nightcap after returning from the 15-day injured list Monday. Milwaukee right-hander Chad Patrick (3-7, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener, with Brandon Woodruff (4-0, 2.06) slated to go in Game 2.

John Wall, 5-time All-Star, retires after 11 NBA seasons
John Wall is retiring after 11 NBA seasons. Wall, 34, played most of his career with the Washington Wizards after they made him the first overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Kentucky. The five-time All-Star point guard finishes his NBA career with averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game. 'Today, I'm stepping off of the court, but not away from the game,' Wall said in a social media post on Tuesday. 'Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves. I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter.' Wall played most of his career with the Washington Wizards, but also played for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. In his best season, he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists for the Wizards in 2016-17 and was named All-NBA third team. Wall was one of the fastest, most athletic point guards during his prime — he was the 2014 Slam Dunk champion. He was an elite defender, making the All-Defensive second team in 2015. Injuries plagued the second half of his career. He never played more than half the games in any of the past six seasons and he didn't play the last two years.
