Brackley ready for 'relentless' National League

BBC News10-08-2025
Brackley Town boss Gavin Cowan says his side have "set a standard" for the rest of the season by winning their first game at National League level. The Saints were promoted as National League North champions last term after missing out in the play-offs in six of the seven previous campaigns. And Shane Byrne's first-half penalty was enough to give them a home win over Eastleigh on Saturday."We knew what we were up against. They're a huge outfit in terms of size, great resources and really well established at the level," Cowan told BBC Radio Northampton."We wanted to fathom the level and understand where we were and what we were doing. First win, first clean sheet bodes well for the future."
A crowd of just over 1,200 watched the game at St James Park, Brackley's home since 1974."What an unbelievable moment for us to be playing in the National League - somebody was saying they watched us in the Hellenic League and now, all of a sudden, we're in the National League. For the supporters, I was overjoyed," Cowan added. "The message to the players is to make sure they go and replicate that. We've set a standard and you can't just take your foot off the gas. It's a relentless season and a relentless league."Eastleigh have a team of big, strong pros and that's what we're going to be up against all year. We've got to compete with that week in and week out."Brackley make their EFL Trophy debut on Tuesday with a home game against Blackburn Rovers Under-21s, but must then wait until 20 August for their second league fixture, when they will be away to Yeovil Town."I've got two hats on. I understand the magnitude of where we are and where we've come from and from a community perspective, a supporters' perspective, the people that love this club, just being here is incredible," Cowan added."But professionally, my job isn't to settle for that, my job is to pit our wits against the big clubs at this level, Eastleigh being one of them."

Pats say WR Stefon Diggs (ACL) is 'ahead of schedule'

August 18 - New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is "ahead of schedule" in his return from a torn ACL, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Monday. Diggs began training camp last month with no restrictions after receiving medical clearance, but he has yet to appear in a preseason game. "Stefon has done everything we've asked," Wolf said. "He's been attentive in meetings. He's been good on the field. He had two really good practices in Minnesota. He's ahead of schedule, injury-wise." Diggs has been cleared for contact, but Wolf did not say whether the four-time Pro Bowl selection will be active for Thursday's preseason finale against the host New York Giants. Diggs told reporters last week "we'll see" when asked about his availability for the Sept. 7 season opener against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders. Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots in March. Playing for the Houston Texans last season, he caught 47 passes in eight games before sustaining the season-ending knee injury on Oct. 27 against the Indianapolis Colts. Diggs, 31, has 857 career catches for 10,491 yards and 70 touchdowns in 144 regular-season games (136 starts) with the Minnesota Vikings (2015-19), Buffalo Bills (2020-23) and Texans. He also owns 69 receptions for 909 yards and four touchdowns in 14 postseason games. --Field Level Media

Lincoln sign Okoronkwo on loan from Everton

Lincoln City have signed striker Francis Okoronkwo on a season-long loan deal from Premier League club 20-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for the Toffees and spent last season on loan at Salford City, scoring four goals in 24 appearances in all in Blyth, Okoronkwo moved to Everton's youth academy in 2021 after leaving becomes Lincoln's third signing of the summer window following the arrivals of defenders Sonny Bradley and Ryley Towler. "Buzzing, just happy to step up and try and compete in the league. I can't wait to play in front of the fans," Okoronkwo told BBC Radio Lincolnshire."I definitely would say I developed the more physical side of the game [at Salford], knowing how to use my body and get into positions. That's probably the main takeaway from last season."Once I knew Lincoln were in for me, it was a no-brainer to come here. There's a rich history of top players coming down and playing for Lincoln and getting the game time that they need."I feel my game is very transferable into the way Lincoln play, and hopefully I can show that this season."
