In this candid conversation, Madhumita opened up about dream collaborations, her love for ensemble storytelling, navigating Bollywood sets, and why empathy—not ego—is the true engine behind her work.
Excerpts...
Your first Hindi film features Abhishek Bachchan — was he on your dream list of actors to work with? Who else in Bollywood would you love to collaborate with and why?
Honestly, I was a bit nervous about working with a star like Abhishek, but his professionalism and down-to-earth nature put everyone at ease—including Daivik and myself. I'd love to collaborate with him again. Directing
sir has always been a dream—like many, I'm a true fan! But then, there are so many talented actors in India, and I'd love the chance to work with all of them. Can't blame a girl for dreaming, right?
Is there a Bollywood actor or actress whose work you deeply admire—maybe someone whose choices or craft you find especially inspiring as a storyteller?
I deeply admire anyone—actor, director, or technician—who puts the film above themselves.
That selfless dedication to the story and the craft is what truly inspires me as a storyteller.
If you could cast any two Bollywood actors in your next film—no budget constraints—who would you pick and what genre would the film be?
That is a really tough one. So I'm going to say this. If it is from Bollywood, and I had zero budget restrictions, I would love to bring together a powerhouse ensemble of incredible women for this international horror film that I am developing. Imagine a band of fierce, talented actresses like
ma'am,
ma'am,
ma'am, Shefali Shah ma'am, Tillotama Shome ma'am,
ma'am, and
ma'am—all in one film. Just the thought of that energy and talent on screen gives me goosebumps!
As someone now straddling industries, what's something unique you've observed about Bollywood sets compared to Kollywood ones?
Regardless of where I am making the film, being on set is magic and that is magic I love and hope to be creating for a very long time.
You have a strong emotional signature in your work—be it Vallamai Tharayo, K.D., or Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa. What personal experiences or values shape your storytelling lens the most?
I'm drawn to human stories and spend a lot of time observing people, understanding them. At the core of it all, I believe it's important to be a kind and empathetic human being; everything else comes after that. You can always learn and refine your craft as a filmmaker, but for the kinds of stories I want to tell, empathy is essential.
Someone I once deeply admired told me that filmmakers are like surrogates. As someone who is naturally sensitive and emotional, I'll admit that comment stung.

Every film I make feels like a child to me. I truly believe that our sensitivity is what makes us creators—if we don't connect emotionally with our stories, how can we expect audiences to connect with our characters? Ultimately, my hope is that the characters I create linger in the minds of the audience, giving them something meaningful to take home.
You're now part of a rising wave of South Indian women directors entering Hindi cinema. How do you hope your voice adds to the larger landscape?
I recently read about Jiro Ono, the legendary sushi chef who runs a small restaurant in a Tokyo train station.
Every day, he wakes up at 4 am, carefully selects his fish, and dedicates himself to perfecting his craft—one piece of sushi at a time. His routine never changes, but his passion and commitment shine through in everything he does.
That's exactly how I see my journey as a filmmaker. I just want to keep making films, honing my craft every day, and loving every minute of it—one story at a time. If my voice adds anything to the larger landscape, I hope it's that quiet dedication to storytelling and the belief that, with consistency and heart, every story can make a difference.
For me, it really is as simple as that.
With increasing collaborations and remakes, the lines between Bollywood and South cinema are blurring more than ever. As someone who's now worked in both industries, how do you view this shift?
As I mentioned earlier, human emotions are universal, so language is no longer a barrier. With the rise of OTT and digital platforms, we now have access to stories from all over the world and find ourselves resonating with narratives from places we've never even visited. I see this as a positive shift—it allows us to learn from global perspectives while also sharing our own culture-specific stories with a wider audience.
I truly believe that if you keep your story rooted in its local context and stay authentic to the emotions, it will naturally find a global audience. Authenticity transcends language, and that's what makes storytelling so powerful today.

'Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan' box office collections day 7: Vikrant Messy and Shanaya Kapoor's film slows down; mints Rs 1.76 cr in first week
After a modestly promising weekend, 'Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan' starring Vikrant Messy and Shanaya Kapoor has seen a consistent dip in collections during the weekdays. According to the Sacnilk website, the romantic drama managed to bring in just Rs 8 lakhs crore on its seventh day (Thursday), taking its first-week India net total to approximately Rs 1.76 crore. Steady Weekend, but Steep Drop During Weekdays The film, which had a slow start, picked up slightly on Saturday and Sunday but began to fizzle out starting Monday. While the performances and storytelling found appreciation in niche circles, box office momentum hasn't quite matched the audience goodwill. On its opening day (Friday), the film collected Rs 30 lakhs, and then, showed a positive 66% jump on Saturday with Rs 50 lakhs. The same figure was repeated on Sunday, giving hope for a stable run. However, the film couldn't maintain the momentum during the weekdays. Monday saw a sharp 70% decline, and the movie made only Rs 15 lakhs. The numbers kept falling; the film collected Rs 14 lakhs on Tuesday, Rs 9 lakhs on Wednesday, and finally Rs 8 lakhs on Thursday. Low occupancy across key regions The overall Hindi occupancy for the film on Day 7 was around 8.50%, with night shows performing slightly better at 12%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In metro regions, Mumbai led the charge with 13.75% overall occupancy, while NCR followed at 10.50%. Pune and other cities hovered around or below the 7% mark. 'Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan' review The movie is getting mixed reviews from the audience. ETimes gave the Vikrant Massey starrer a 3-star rating and an excerpt from our review reads, "Tanveer Mir's cinematography lends stunning visual appeal, capturing both the grandeur of Mussoorie and the charm of Europe. Vishal Mishra 's soothing music further elevates the film. Despite narrative shortcomings, what works is the lead couple. Shanaya Kapoor makes an impressive debut, bringing a strong screen presence and handling emotional scenes with ease. Vikrant Massey once again proves his mettle with a nuanced performance across both light and intense moments. Zain Khan Durrani also delivers a fine act, despite limited screen time." With mixed reviews and underwhelming occupancy rates, the movie is expected to surely face some competition in the coming days. ‘Superman' box office collections day 7: James Gunn's film sees modest hold; Rs 35.62 cr nett in week 1
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The iconic cape continues to soar as 'Superman' (3D) wraps up its first week at the Indian box office with a total collection of Rs 35.62 crore (nett). According to the Sacnilk website, despite a steep Monday drop, the film recovered slightly midweek and held steady on Thursday, bringing in Rs 2 crore on day 7 across all languages. The film stars David Corenswet in his debut as the Man of Steel and has been dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu alongside the English release. While the initial weekend saw great enthusiasm, especially in metros, occupancy rates have since evened out. Weekend momentum vs weekday realities After an impressive opening at Rs 7.25 crore on Friday, 'Superman' (3D) surged on Saturday with Rs 9.5 crore and held strong Sunday at Rs 9.25 crore. However, Monday brought a dramatic fall—just Rs 2.6 crore—showing the typical weekday slowdown. Encouragingly, Tuesday brought a mild bounce back with Rs 3 crore, but Wednesday and Thursday hovered around the Rs 2 crore mark each. Occupancy patterns reflect mixed buzz On Day 7, the film had a 9.99% occupancy in English (3D) screens. It had the highest traction during night shows (13.13%). Mumbai, NCR, and Hyderabad led in turnout, with overall citywise occupancy staying close to or just below 10%. Superman The Immigrant? James Gunn's Bold Take On Hero's Identity Sets Fans Off In A Fiery Debate Tamil-dubbed shows saw a surprising 13.53% occupancy overall, especially strong during afternoon and night slots, signaling a growing Southern fanbase for DC titles. Hindi versions, however, struggled, posting single-digit occupancy in both 2D and 3D formats. Flying forward: Week 2 holds the key As the film steps into its second weekend, 'Superman' (3D) faces competition from regional releases and action-packed Indian films. An excerot from ETimes review for the film read, "Superman is entertaining, enjoyable, even epic but never intense. James Gunn's non-origin story soars high visually but stays limited emotionally. The director's unyielding need to go traditional comes at a cost. It is still a tremendous cinematic experience that deserves to be watched in IMAX. " With Rs 35.62 crore collected so far, its fate now hinges on holding power beyond the core fanbase. Whether Kal-El's new chapter becomes a long-lasting hit will be determined in the days to come.

Though the main plot revolves around a brash sports teacher training a group of athletes who have ID (intellectual disabilities) as a part of his community service, the movie is more than just a sports drama. 'Sitaare Zameen Par' review Times of India's critics gave the movie an impressive 3.5 stars rating and in the review mentioned, 'The film mixes sentiment with spunk, avoiding overly preachy tones. ID (intellectual disabilities) is described through relatable lines like, 'Humaari kismat haathon pe nahi, chromosome pe likh ke aati hai (Our destiny isn't written on our palms — it's written in our chromosomes).' While the underdog sports narrative and troubled-coach arc feel familiar, the film's heart and humour keep it engaging. ' The review also highlighted certain points that could have been better. For instance, the overly sentimental climax or segments that were stretched more than needed.
