2 Americans drown in a 3-hour span at same Bahamas resort: Police
The drownings occurred at Celebration Key, a new $600 million private resort for guests of Carnival Cruise Line that opened in July, authorities said.
"Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday -- one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away," Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement.
One of the drowning victims was a passenger on the Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras and the other was a passenger aboard the Carnival Elation, according to the cruise line. Both victims had been traveling with their families, according to Carnival.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance," the Carnival statement said.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed to ABC News that it's leading the investigations into both deaths.

Just before noon on Friday, a 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkeling off one of the Celebration Key beaches, according to a police statement.
"A lifeguard assisted him from the water and CPR was administered, but to no avail. The male who is reported to be an American national was pronounced deceased by a medical doctors," according to the police statement.
Carnival Cruise Lines said it is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of the deaths.
"We are saddened by the loss of our guests. We have trained lifeguards and medical professionals who respond promptly," the company said.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, a 74-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool at the resort, according to police.
A lifeguard pulled the woman from the waters and performed CPR, but could not revive her.
"As a result, the female who was reported to be an American national was pronounced deceased by a medical doctors," according to the police statement.
Autopsies are scheduled to be performed to determine the exact causes of death, according to police. The names of the tourists were not immediately released.
Elsewhere, a 63-year-old American was attacked by a shark around 1 p.m. on Saturday while spearfishing off Big Grand Cay in the Bahamas, according to the Royal Bahamas Police force. The man, whose name was not released, was treated at a local clinic for what police described as "severe injuries" and was airlifted to the United States for additional treatment, according to police.

Gerard Stokes was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Special Operations Group and the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force at 6:15 a.m. Saturday in Greenbelt, Md., the U.S. Marshals Service said in a Sunday statement. Authorities accused Stokes of hitting an MPD officer with an ATV on March 14. Police said the officers attempted to contact a group operating ATVs and dirt bikes near a gas station in the nation's capital. As the uniformed officers approached, "Stokes accelerated his ATV, raised the front tires in the air and aimed it toward the officers," the U.S. Marshals Service said. "One officer was able to move out of the way of the oncoming ATV, the other officer was struck head on by the ATV and drug approximately 15 feet across the gas station lot by Stokes who then fled the scene without stopping." The injured officer, who was transported to WHC Medstar, is still recovering from his injuries, the service said, adding that he has not returned to full duty. A July 15 search of Stokes' listed home in Greenbelt produced multiple rifles, shotguns, pistols and 720 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, authorities said. Stokes has a criminal history of robbery, aggravated assault and carrying a pistol without a license with a large capacity magazine. "This apprehension during this public safety surge proves that we are making a difference by getting ruthless and dangerous criminals off the street," U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta said in a statement. According to the Marshals Service, the arrest is part of Trump's federal crackdown in the nation's capital. Trump earlier this month signed an executive order declaring a crime emergency in D.C. The American president has mobilized the district's National Guard for policing and Attorney General Pam Bondi has installed the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration as the temporary police chief of the MPD. The federal takeover of D.C. is being challenged in courts and in the streets, where thousands protested nationwide over the weekend.

The unidentified man was taken to a local clinic for medical assistance before being airlifted to the U.S. for further treatment. There has been no update on his current condition.
