In 10 years, train accidents down by 77% in 2024-25, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tells Lok Sabha
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw told Lok Sabha on Wednesday that railway accidents had come down by 77 per cent in 10 years — from 135 in 2014-15 to 31 in 2024-25 — as the Narendra Modi-led government was prioritising safety measures. He added that there was a constant effort to use new technologies to ensure the safety of trains. Vaishnaw said that Kavach, a technology-intensive automatic train protection system, was commissioned under the Make-in-India initiative within a short period, while many developed countries took a few decades to move towards automatic train protection systems despite having a smaller railway network than India. He said that the Kavach version 4.0 would be commissioned fully in a day on the Kota-Mathura track. He added that as Kavach technology required an extensive optical fibre network, a 5,856 km-long optical fibre network had been laid, 619 telecom towers installed, 708 stations equipped with data centres, and 1,107 locomotives installed with a software system. Kavach is operational on 4,000 kilometers of railway track, he said. Vaishnaw was replying to a question posed by Bhumare Sandipanrao Asaram, Shiv Sena MP from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, during the Question Hour. Vaishnaw had faced the heat last year after a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station claimed 18 lives during the Mahakumbh, leading to demands for his resignation from the Opposition. While the Opposition flagged multiple train mishaps during his tenure, the deadliest train accident under Vaishnaw's leadership was the 2023 Odisha train collision on June 2 near Bahanaga Bazar station, which claimed the lives of 296 people and injured over 1,200 when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train, and then hit another train.

Chandigarh: In two years, glide on PGI-Sarangpur stretch as heritage panel okays flyover
City residents can finally hope to say goodbye to traffic bottlenecks on the stretch between Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Sarangpur as the Chandigarh Heritage Committee has given its nod for a flyover on this route. First proposed in 2020, the flyover project had run into several hurdles. (HT photo for representation) This is the second flyover to be cleared for the city after the Tribune Flyover project, which recently received an in-principal nod from the Centre. Confirming the development, UT chief engineer CB Ojha said, 'The heritage panel has granted its approval for the PGIMER- Sarangpur flyover. We are now waiting for the official minutes of the meeting. Once we get it, we will float the tenders for the project.' As per officials, the tendering and project allotment process will take about two months while the flyover construction may take about 18 months. 'If things move as per plans, we can expect the flyover to be ready by March 2027,' said a senior official of the engineering department. Chandigarh: In two years, glide on PGI-Sarangpur stretch as heritage panel okays flyover First proposed in 2020, the flyover project had run into several hurdles. A geotechnical study was conducted and a feasibility report was submitted but the project was shelved in February 2023 following the announcement of a Metro corridor along the same route. The proposal was later revived after a fresh survey, conducted under the supervision of deputy commissioner and road safety committee chairperson Nishant Kumar Yadav, flagged the stretch as a major traffic bottleneck. To resolve the conflict between the flyover and the proposed Metro line, the UT engineering department in June suggested a double-decker structure—one level for Metro tracks and the other for vehicular traffic. The project was tabled for final approval before the Chandigarh Heritage Committee, the authority for clearing projects requiring architectural changes to the city. The found that the flyover does not interfere with the sectoral grid of heritage sectors (Sectors 1 to 30) and thus gave its go-ahead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the city's first operational Metro stretch, a 3-km corridor between Malahi Pakadi and Pataliputra Bus Terminal on August 15, Independence Day. This launch marks a major milestone in Bihar's urban transport landscape. The Patna Metro will not only offer passengers a smooth, accessible, and well-organised travel experience but also help ease the city's growing traffic congestion. Trial Run Complete Metro coaches, delivered from Pune, have successfully undergone trial runs. Final safety and technical inspections are currently underway under the supervision of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Modern amenities such as automatic fare collection machines, platform screen doors, and digital displays are being installed at five key stations – Malahi Pakadi, Khemnichak, Bhootnath, Zero Mile, and New ISBT. Affordable Travel Besides reducing road congestion, the metro is expected to make a positive contribution to the city's environmental health. Capacity In its initial phase, each Metro will consist of three air-conditioned coaches, with a total capacity of around 150 passengers. Future expansions plan to increase the number of coaches to eight, significantly boosting ridership capacity. All coaches will feature modern amenities, including CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi, charging points, and more. Stations will also offer parking and food court facilities for commuter convenience. The Metro is expected to operate daily from 5 am to 11 pm, in line with Delhi Metro's schedule.
