The 11 new ‘Aussie words' you will now find in the Oxford Dictionary

Perth Now27-06-2025
Australians rejoice!
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has included 11 new words that are quintessentially Australian in its latest update.
Unsurprisingly, the new words have a lot to do with booze and footy.
Oxford types have caught up with Aussie teenagers, with the inclusion of the word 'goon'.
Most Aussies will certainly understand taking a swig out of a goon bag, which is officially listed as 'a plastic, foil-lined pouch in which inexpensive wine is sold'. Oxford elites might need a little longer to catch up on the game 'goon of fortune', played by countless cohorts of Aussies during their adolescence.
Next is 'cask', which describes the box around the goon bag.
While 'slab' refers to a case of beer, which is now officially known as 'retail pack of beer, typically containing 24 cans or bottles'.
Moving on, the word 'spew' now has new reverence. Most Aussies know someone 'spewin' over something, most recently the insane cost-of-living in this country.
Officially, spew refers to when 'someone is bitterly disappointed or very annoyed about something. An Australian who says they are 'absolutely spewing' means they are devastated or angry.'
The Australian love of sport is also a big one for Oxford types in 2025.
The word 'carn' has officially gained its place in the dictionary.
Officially, the word 'carn' means the 'colloquial pronunciation of 'come on!'.
Our beloved AFL got 'best and fairest' in the dictionary in 2025.
The term 'best and fairest' is, officially, 'an Australian rules football or rugby league player who wins any of various awards given for a combination of exceptional performance and good sportsmanship'.
The sport has also given us the 'don't argue' this year, with it widely used in other contact sports.
Officially, it is 'a colloquial term for a push or blow to the face ... delivered to fend off a potential tackler, using the arm held out straight from the body'.
Aboriginal English also got two new additions in the Oxford dictionary.
'Balanda' which is a word dating back to the 1800s, used to refer to a white person or white people.
Most believe the word Makasarese is a derivative of the Dutch word 'Hollander' or possibly the Malay word 'belanda', meaning Dutch or European.
The Makassarese language is spoken in the South Sulawesi province in Indonesia.
Officially: 'Balanda is a loan word from the Yolngu language of northeast Arnhem Land, which itself was borrowed from the Makasarese language of South Sulawesi province in Indonesia, or from a similar form in a related language.'
While 'custodian' now has an Indigenous layer to its meaning.
Officially: 'a term used for an Australian Aboriginal person who is recognised as having certain ancestral rights to, and traditional obligations, responsibilities and authority for a particular area of land and community.'
Other entries include 'gunzel', which is Australian slang for: 'a person who loves trams or trains.'
Lastly, 'regional', which shouldn't be a massive surprise to anyone, means 'away from major cities'.

Ricky Stuart's son Jed bracing to be dropped by his dad as Savelio Tamale nears return for NRL finals

Jed Stuart has had father Ricky's passion for Canberra ever since he was a kid. Back in the day, the younger Stuart would dread going to school after a Raiders loss in case his emotions took over and made him want to fight the classmates taunting his father's team. But that passion doesn't mean Ricky's son would take it personally if the coach chose to replace him with Savelio Tamale on the run to NRL finals. The rise of Stuart Jr has been one of many success stories in the nation's capital this season. The former Australian rugby sevens representative has managed seven games, and four tries, on the left wing for the ladder-leading Raiders amid Tamale's knee injury, with Canberra winning six of those. 'You've been dreaming about playing NRL your whole life, then finally doing it and actually getting a good stint of games, it's unreal,' Jed told AAP. On the surface, Jed and his father appear cut from different cloths, with the older a freakish halfback in his day and the younger a rangy winger some 20cm taller. But in his heart, Jed carries the love for the Raiders that has become synonymous with his father. 'His passion for the club rubs off on me, especially at home,' the 24-year-old said. 'Our whole family loves it here. I'm not to the extent where I'll get emotional talking about little things like he does, but I care a lot.' That's always been the case since late 2013, when the Stuart family moved back to Canberra so Ricky could take his dream job: coaching the club where he won three premierships. 'I used to dread going to school after a loss, because I'd be so passionate and they'd be giving it to me. I'd want to get in a fight but I'd hold myself back,' Jed said with a smile. But these days, Jed knows how to keep his emotions in check, and will remain level-headed as his father weighs up a big selection call on the wing in coming weeks. Tamale had been in the rookie of the year conversation before being struck down by a knee injury in Round 14 and is expected to be available in the coming weeks. Jed knows it could be the first time he's had a tough selection chat with his father. 'It'll probably be hard on him but I'll take none of it personally,' he said. 'Whoever the coaching staff pick to go there will do a job, which I think is what me and 'Savie' have both proved. 'We're there to do a job and we've both done a pretty good one. If he goes in over me and whatnot, I'm happy with what the coaching staff have picked. I just want the team to win.' Ricky had long known of the 23-year-old's ability but was hesitant to plug him into Canberra's backline before Tamale's injury. Jed responded on debut by taking a bomb in attack with his first play, saving a 40-20 with a bat back and then scoring to help secure a 16-12 win over Wests Tigers. 'This week has been the hardest moment I've had as a coach,' Ricky said at the time. 'Because from a father's point of view, I don't want him to come out and be man of the match, I just want him to hold his own. And he did that. 'The amount of times I've been waking up at 3am with real bad thoughts ... He didn't have any of those tonight, which was good.'

Bernard Tomic has taken a big step towards playing his first US Open main draw since 2017 after taking down the 10th seed in the opening round of qualifying. Magpies make Hill concession, Howe concussion call

Jeremy Howe will return for Collingwood's high-stakes clash with Melbourne, but coach Craig McRae concedes time is running out for Bobby Hill to feature in his side's AFL premiership push. Hill, the 2023 Norm Smith Medal winner, has made just one senior appearance in the past two months as he deals with personal issues. The 25-year-old has been absent from training this week and won't play against the Demons at the MCG on Friday night, when the Magpies can lock in a top-four berth. On Wednesday, McRae said he had dinner with Hill the previous night as he keeps tabs on the small forward's welfare. Hill asked his coach to leave the door ajar for a possible return to action in September, but appears an unlikely finals participant. "There's high performance and there's love and care, and I've just sort of left the high performance for now and I'm just making sure the young lad's OK," McRae said. "Time's running out in the season and maybe the high performance might be a bit far at the moment, but we'll just take that off the table for now. "Hopefully he can get back in the club and be happy, and then we'll see where we go from there." McRae specifically asked Hill how he should answer inevitable questions about whether he will play again at AFL level this season. "He goes, 'Please just leave a little bit of hope there for me'," McRae said. "But he's well aware that time's running out for getting enough load and then to be available. "I stepped straight back into love and care and said, 'Nah, let's just get him right day by day'." Howe has been given the green light to return from concussion, in a significant boost to Collingwood's defensive stocks. The 35-year-old was knocked out in a sickening collision with Hawthorn's Jai Newcombe in round 22 and is back after missing last week's three-point loss to ladder leaders Adelaide. "Howey will come back and his experience is important to us. I think he'll play our system really well," McRae said. Collingwood's forward-line connection wasn't up to scratch against the Crows, when the Magpies dominated the inside-50 tally (71-37) but couldn't make it count. McRae will consider recalling ruck-forward Mason Cox, with Daniel McStay potentially making way after some quiet performances. "We're working hard with Dan to get him moving and be part of our best team," McRae said. "There's a lot of work behind the scenes to work on his craft, jump at the ball well and fit into our patterns."
