Two in a row for Merlier at UAE Tour

Daily Tribune23-02-2025

Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier surged from deep in the pack to claim victory in the bunch sprint on stage six of the UAE Tour at Abu Dhabi Breakwater yesterday. With this win, Merlier and Italian Jonathan Milan each have two stage victories in a race filled with fast sprinters.
Merlier had won Friday's stage, while Milan took the opener and stage four. Milan leads the sprint points race with 65 points, followed closely by Merlier with 56.
Merlier finished just ahead of compatriot Jasper Philipsen in second, with Milan taking third after Merlier's seventh career win in the UAE.

The 176km stage around Abu Dhabi, Khalifa City, and Yas Island was no easy feat. "It might have looked easy, but believe me, I suffered," Merlier said. "A kilometre from the line, I didn't think I'd make it. Beating guys like Jonathan and Jasper is always important."
Cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar holds the overall lead ahead of Sunday's final mountain stage, which includes a tough 10km climb with 8-10% gradients. Racing for the local Team UAE, Pogacar built his lead after finishing close to time-trial winner Josh Tarling on Tuesday and then extending it on Wednesday's hilltop finish.

Pochettino problems mount as US routed 4-0 by Switzerland

AFP | Los Angeles An experimental United States line-up crashed to a 4-0 friendly home defeat to Switzerland on Tuesday, deepening the gloom around Mauricio Pochettino's squad one year out from hosting the World Cup. A game intended as a morale-boosting send-off before the USA take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup unraveled in a disastrous first half that saw Switzerland 4-0 up after 36 minutes in Nashville. Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi scored for Switzerland to leave a disgruntled home crowd at Geodis Park in Nashville raining boos down from the stands. The defeat was the fourth straight loss suffered by Pochettino's side, the first time the US has lost four in a row since 2007. Pochettino is planning for the USA's Gold Cup campaign, which kicks off on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago, without several key players who are unavailable. AC Milan star Christian Pulisic was excused duty from the tournament after requesting a rest while Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are unavailable due to the Italian side's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Those absences left former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Pochettino having to dig deep to gauge the depth of his resources as the US builds towards next year's World Cup finals in the United States, Can-ada and Mexico. On Tuesday's evidence, the return of his European-based stars cannot come soon enough after Swit-zerland ran riot in a lopsided first half. Pochettino said he bore responsibility for picking the inexperienced line-up that were outclassed by the rampant Swiss. 'First of all it's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain play-ers, but we were never in the game,' the Argentine said. US defender Walker Zimmerman attempted to put a brave face on the mauling, insisting there was still plenty of time for the side to improve before next year's World Cup. 'It's easy to look at one half and think this is all going to pieces, that we can't come back from a result like this,' Zimmerman told TNT television. 'But look at the build-up to 2022 -- we took down Morocco 3-0 and they made the semi-final. Things change. That was six months apart. 'So it's not the end of the world. We accept that it's not good enough and we realize that. That's where the disappointment comes in, but we have to flip the script and we've gotta make sure we do not come out like that ever again.'

Man City sign midfielder Reijnders in time for Club World Cup

Manchester City yesterday announced the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for £46.3 million ($62.4 million), in time for the midfielder to play in the Club World Cup. The Dutch international, who has signed a five-year contract, is City's fourth signing of the week as they step up a radical rebuild following a poor season by their sky-high standards. The club have also announced deals for Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki, Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri over the past few days. The total spent is around £108 million, on top of a significant outlay during the January transfer window. The transfers have been finalised in time for the players to be registered for the group stages of the Club World Cup in the United States, which starts on June 14. Reijnders, 26, joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 and scored 15 goals during a disappointing 2024/25 campaign for the Italian club, who finished eighth in Serie A. He will bolster manager Pep Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of veteran Kevin De Bruyne. 'I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City,' said Reijnders. 'City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities. 'Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years.' After four consecutive Premier League titles, City finished a distant third last season and bowed out of the Champions League early.

Ranieri Rejects Italy Job to Stay as Roma Senior Advisor

TDT | Manama Claudio Ranieri has turned down the opportunity to manage the Italian national football team, opting instead to continue his role as a senior advisor at AS Roma. The decision comes in the wake of Italy's shocking 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier, which led to the sacking of former manager Luciano Spalletti on Sunday, June 8. Ranieri, a 73-year-old Italian coaching veteran, announced his decision on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, just days after being approached by Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina. Speaking to the Italian news agency ANSA, Ranieri expressed gratitude for the offer, calling it 'a great honour.' However, after careful reflection, he chose to remain with Roma, where he recently transitioned into a senior advisory role following his second retirement from active coaching last season. 'I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally,' Ranieri told ANSA. He also acknowledged the support of Roma's owners, the Friedkin family, who backed his decision-making process regarding the national team offer. 'The Friedkins gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team, but the decision is mine alone,' he added. Ranieri's tenure as Roma's head coach last season was a notable success, guiding the club to a fifth-place finish in Serie A and securing qualification for the Europa League. His departure from the dugout paved the way for former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini to take the reins at Roma. Now, as a senior advisor, Ranieri continues to lend his extensive experience to the club, which he has long been associated with both as a player and a coach. The Italian national team, meanwhile, is left searching for a new manager after Spalletti's abrupt exit. The 66-year-old, who previously led Napoli to a Serie A title, faced intense scrutiny following Italy's lackluster performance against Norway. The four-time World Cup champions are now tasked with finding a leader to steer them through the ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign. Ranieri's decision underlines his deep connection to AS Roma, a club he has served in various capacities over the years. His choice to prioritize his advisory role over the prestigious national team position highlights his loyalty and commitment to the Giallorossi. As Roma prepares for the upcoming Europa League campaign under Gasperini's leadership, Ranieri's presence behind the scenes will undoubtedly continue to shape the club's ambitions. For now, Italian football fans await news of the next national team manager, while Roma supporters can take comfort in knowing that one of the country's most revered coaches remains firmly in their corner.
