needed to prove spot on as Longford Town paid a cruel price to bow out of the
FAI Cup
after a gallant rearguard effort at Tallaght Stadium.
Penalties early and late from Adam Matthews and substitute Graham Burke ended the First Division strugglers' brave resistance as Rovers laboured into Tuesday's quarter-final draw.
There was no surprise that Rovers' boss Stephen Bradley made no fewer than nine changes to last Thursday's Conference League win over FC Ballkani as he freshened up his starting XI ahead of Thursday's trip to the Azores to meet Santa Clara in their big play-off.
Sitting third bottom of the second tier, Longford came to Tallaght as 30-1 outsiders.

Scarcely surprising then that Rovers owned the ball from the kick off and were ahead from an eighth-minute penalty.
It stemmed from a needless push on John McGovern by Town centre-back Oisin Hand with the Rovers striker duly stepping up to send goalkeeper Kian Moore the wrong way from 12 yards.
Though a far from ideal start, Longford responded positively, coming close to an equaliser two minutes later.
Danny Norris and Dean O'Shea combined to put Aaron Doran in on goal down the left. The midfielder's flick had just too much on it as it sailed over Ed McGinty's crossbar.
Proving no little threat on the counter, Town soon gave Rovers another scare with Cory O'Sullivan having to get his body in the way to block a drive from Norris.
Having grown in confidence, the visitors then gave their small band of travelling support plenty to cheer when levelling on 25 minutes when Rovers didn't deal with Town skipper Dean O'Shea's long throw.
The ball was recycled back by Doran and Pharell Manuel in turn for O'Shea to nod it into the path of Stefan Ugbesia to shoot past McGinty.
Concerted pressure in added time at the end of the half came close to restoring Rovers lead.
Town survived thanks to Sean Moore heading O'Sullivan's shot off the line with Matthews, who had taken the initial corner, then seeing his follow-up shot shave the crossbar.
Labouring to regain the lead despite continuing to dominate the ball, Bradley made a quadruple substitution just past the hour as Dylan Watts, Burke, Danny Grant and Aaron Greene were introduced in an effort to add much needed invention and spark to their attack.
But it was 15 minutes before they troubled Moore, Watts chipping through for Greene whose header was straight at the Longford goalkeeper.
A Lee Grace header from a Watts corner was scrambled clear while Moore punched away a dangerous cross before Longford were undone in the 84th minute.
Andrew Spain's elbow made contact with Grant's ball into the area as referee Alan Patchell pointed to the spot for the second time in the game.
Burke drilled the penalty low and hard to the bottom corner as Moore went the other way.

Stephen Bradley would love to see Shamrock Rovers AND Shelbourne make the league phase of this season's Europa Conference League. The two teams are in play-off action tonight, with the Hoops in the Azores to face Portuguese top-flight side Santa Clara, and Shels at home to Linfield in an all-island rematch. Bradley believes progress by both clubs would represent another step in the right direction for Irish football - and would bring the dream of Champions League qualification closer. 'I'd love to see it,' he said. 'Obviously I am (in a Rovers mindset), but the bigger picture is, I'd love to see two Irish teams in the group stages. 'We were saying that the aim is to keep pushing and make the league better on and off the pitch. I think we've made great strides in that, I think we all agree. 'Everyone's played their part in that, on and off the pitch. 'But you think, where's the next step? We have all been banging on about the facilities, and that's not going to go away, we need to keep banging that drum. 'But for us on the pitch as teams, can we go and get two teams in group stages? 'When that becomes a regular thing, can we go and push and do the same in Europa League? And eventually the game has to be, can someone break the Champions League? 'It's extremely difficult. That has to be the end goal for someone. I'm not saying it happens tomorrow, but I'm saying that it's the end goal. It has to start somewhere. 'If two can do it, it's another step in the right direction for the league. And I'd love to see it. That's what we've got to be aiming for. We shouldn't shy away from that. 'We shouldn't try and hide behind anything other than wanting two or three Irish teams in group stage football. 'And I think we can get that. If not this year, next year, the year after, I think we can get that.' This is the second year in a row that two Irish teams are within 180 minutes of league phase football. Last year, St Patrick's Athletic bowed out at the play-off stage, while Rovers made it all the way to the Conference League proper, and embarked on a historic run to the last-32. 'We have a chance again to do it,' he said. 'That's progression. And you hope Shelbourne go and do the business over two legs. 'I think you can see every year, it's not just us doing it, those teams getting close every year. And the more we do that, the more we keep knocking on the door, the more the door will open. 'We're getting there and we've got to be aiming for that. Like I said, I can see it happening. If not this year, definitely in the coming years, because the standard of the league is getting better and better all the time.' Bradley's men will have their fitness and pace tested in the Estadio de Sao Miguel tonight, with temperatures expected to be in early-to-mid-20s by kick-off. But it's not only the heat that presents a challenge - the pitch is the biggest on which Rovers have ever played, with the dimensions at the limit of what FIFA will allow. According to Bradley, it's 15 yards longer than the Tallaght Stadium surface, and he said: 'It's the biggest pitch we've played on by quite some distance. 'You can see why they have the big pitch. Wing-backs are quick, obviously, two 10s are quick, so you can see why they like it. 'But I've always said that we like spaces as well. So it's, it's how you use the spaces, how you manipulate them on the day. So, yeah, it's fine. It's a big pitch, but it is what it is.' Connor Malley is out for Rovers, while Jack Byrne hasn't made the trip. If Rovers do progress, it will be the first time that an Irish side has made the group stages or league phase outside of the champions' path. 'It would obviously be something that's never been done before. We would create history,' said Bradley. 'But that's what this team has done time and time again, you know, and we've always been a team that embraces challenges and records. 'When we came in, the challenge for us was, could we go and match the four-in-a-row team in terms of leagues? We never said that aloud from day one, but that was always the challenge. And we did that. 'Then you think, can we build on that with European stuff? We've done that. 'This is another challenge. It would obviously be a big achievement considering where Santa Clara finished last year (fifth) in a really, really good league. 'So it would definitely be up there with the achievements for Irish teams. But we have to play two legs now to see what we do.' Eze and Guéhi to start for Crystal Palace in Conference League playoff despite transfer activity
Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Eberechi Eze and Marc Guéhi will both start in the first leg of Crystal Palace 's Conference League playoff on Thursday and insisted that the England pair remain committed to the club despite continuing doubts about their futures. Arsenal on Wednesday night agreed a £67.5 million deal for Eze, after it looked as though the 27-year-old was heading for Spurs. Liverpool , meanwhile, are leading the race to sign Guéhi but have yet to meet Palace's valuation of £40 million for their captain, whose contract at Selhurst Park expires next year. Both players started the goalless draw at Chelsea on Sunday despite speculation that Eze could be absent as negotiations with Spurs continued and they would be eligible to play in the Champions League even if selected to face Norway's cup winners Fredrikstad on Thursday. Glasner was adamant that the pair will feature and he praised Eze and Guéhi for the way they have conducted themselves this week. 'I think it's also the right of a club and the duty of a player to give 100 per cent as long as he's under contract,' the Palace manager said. 'On the other side, I know this is the theory. Glasner was keen not to underestimate Palace's opponents but believes his FA Cup‑winning side can use the disappointment of missing out on the more prestigious competition as motivation for more success. 'I think if you win the FA Cup, you should be in the Europa League, but the reality is we're excited for the journey we're going to go on this season,' he said. 'It's the reward for the club to take part in the European competition for all their effort last season.' Meanwhile, Palace are understood to be close to agreeing a deal with Leicester to sign Bilal El Khannouss as a potential replacement for Eze. They have also shown interest in Christos Tzolis but Club Brugge are reluctant to sell the Greek forward this summer.
