Slump in demand hits tobacco farmers in Andhra Pradesh
Due to higher production in countries such as Brazil and Zimbabwe, the demand for local tobacco in the international market has decreased to a certain extent. Amid over production of 80 million kg in India and 400 million KG in other countries, the prices are low across the global markets.
While the Tobacco Board had approved cultivation of 167 million KG in Andhra Pradesh, the farmers produced more than 240 million KG this year, said its Chairman Yashwanth Kumar Chidipothu.
However, he anticipated a price correction by the end of this month, and assured the farmers of procurement.
Tobacco Board Executive Director B. Vishwasree said 35 million KG had already been procured in A.P. 'The selling price is currently ₹262 per KG against ₹231 per KG during the corresponding season the previous year. We are regularly in talks with the representatives of the procuring companies,' she said.
Farmers cry foul
However, the local farmers said while the Tobacco Board had initiated auction in Mysuru and other areas of Karnataka in October last, it started from mid-April in A.P. As the companies had already procured the required quantities in the neighbouring State, they were rejecting the produce here citing 'low quality.'
'The average per-kg price of Virginia tobacco has been ₹230 to ₹350 during the last three to four years. But now, it stands at ₹240 per KG, which is non-remunerative. When compared to the previous year, the labour charges, lease costs and other expenses have increased this year,' Vaddella Prasad, president of a tobacco farmers' union in Ongole, told The Hindu.
'A majority of the farmers who have produced Burley tobacco are facing more problems. This variety gives more yield, but its quality is low, and the board's licence is not required for growing it. Again, there are two varieties in this. The price of white Burley tobacco stands at ₹120 to ₹150 per KG while the variety is as low as ₹40 per KG,' he said.
In a recent review meeting, Energy Minister G. Ravi Kumar and Social Welfare Minister Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy suggested the buyers to support the farmers who were facing difficulties due to lack of proper demand and remunerative prices.
Prakasam District Collector A. Thameem Ansaria also directed the officials to ensure the farmers got remunerative prices for their produce.

MSME parks set to industrialise Andhra Pradesh big time, says Minister Kondapalli Srinivas
Andhra Pradesh had lost the opportunity of entrepreneurship post bifurcation as most of the sector-specific Industrial Parks (IPs) built in the unified State were concentrated in and around Hyderabad, and a vast majority of the entrepreneurs, too, stayed back. Now, the Government of Andhra Pradesh is striving to attract those entrepreneurs to invest in the State by offering them tailor-made incentives and extending the required support. 'The efforts are paying off as quite a good number of companies, the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), are coming forward to set up their units in the State, for which the government is extending all assistance,' says Andhra Pradesh Minister for MSMEs Kondapalli Srinivas. In an exclusive interaction with The Hindu here on Thursday, Mr. Srinivas said the State was endowed with rich natural resources and human capital needed for industries to thrive, but right now there was not much motivation for various reasons, mainly due to the impact of bifurcation. The State had to restart everything because of bifurcation, and it obviously hit the MSME sector hard. 'Nevertheless, the government has set an ambitious target to develop an Industrial Park (IP) and a flatted factory in each one of the 175 Assembly constituencies in a phased manner, for which three models have been put forth,' he said. Under the first one, private lands would be developed by private parties, who would have the liberty to sell, or lease the plots. The government would incentivise the development cost. The government lands would be developed by private partners in the second model and the third one would have a mix of government and private lands for development by private partners. Already, 11 IPs were inaugurated, tenders were being called for 39 parks and 50 parks were in the planning stage. The target was to complete all the 175 IPs in two years, said Mr. Srinivas, while sounding confident that it would be achieved. Ratan Tata Innovation Hubs The Minister observed that the MSMEs were constrained by the lack of R&D facilities, and to solve this problem, the government was in the process of developing the Ratan Tata Innovation Hubs in a hub-and-spoke model. A support mechanism was being built for the MSMEs to enable them to overcome the challenges such as difficulties faced in raising working capital and accessing the national and global markets. The State government was helping them (MSMEs) to make the most of the funding provided by the Government of India's Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises, while doing what it could within its limitations to give them a fillip, he observed. Mr. Srinivas said there was a sizable number of individuals who went abroad as employees and settled there as entrepreneurs, and many entrepreneurs who had their roots in A.P. have thriving businesses in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Odisha. The government was encouraging them to consider investing in their home State, Mr. Srinivas said, noting that the biggest leveraging factor was the brand image created by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his untiring efforts to take the State forward.

Old careers continue to remain relevant, say experts
At the webinar on 'Emerging Careers 2030: Why Humanities and Sciences Hold the Key', organised jointly by SRM Institute of Science and Technology and The Hindu, experts emphasised that relatively old careers continue to remain relevant. Pro Vice-Chancellor at SRM Institute of Science and Technology Vinay Kumar and Founder and CEO, Inomi Learning, Gurugram, Richa Dwivedi Saklani spoke of the several emerging career opportunities for students studying sciences or humanities. Mr. Kumar said that while AI, green economy and sustainability, logistics and e-commerce, and healthcare and life sciences were emerging fields, as mentioned in the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, existing careers would not change much in the future. He said jobs such as journalism, Human Resources, and corporate communications would remain important. Responding to his observation that India had specific problems such as growing urban development and an ageing society, which required tailored solutions, Ms. Saklani said people who would mull such solutions would require skills in technology, entrepreneurship, and the humanities. Both speakers stressed the importance of acquiring inter-disciplinary skills. Ms. Saklani said that while people in the sciences need to learn how to handle people effectively and identify talent, those in the humanities need to be more open to using technology, new software, and AI. Mr. Kumar emphasised writing persuasively, critical thinking, and empathy as important skills of the present and future. 'When people get trained in multiple disciplines, their thinking changes in a fundamental way,' he said, adding that the National Education Policy stressed on multi-disciplinary education. The speakers also said internships were important in expanding CVs. Mr. Kumar said several companies now request universities to send students to work with them. He said SRM had even reduced course work so that students could take up internships. 'But companies need to work with universities to make these internships meaningful,' he stressed. Ms. Saklani said Inomi encouraged students to get internships as it helped them 'build skills in a live environment with the support of mentors.' Pension sanctioned to 55 people at special Adalat in Nellore
Pensions were sanctioned to as many as 55 people and the General Provident Fund (GPF) authorisation letters were given to 15 persons during a special Adalat held in Nellore on Wednesday. Pension and GPF Adalat was organised here to review and discuss about pending pension cases and GPF related issues for speedy resolution. Speaking to The Hindu, Shanthi Priya Sarella, Principal Accountant General (A&E), Andhra Pradesh, said, 'Pension and GPF Adalats have been organised across the State from 2022. The first Adalat was held in Visakhapatnam. Since I have assumed charge this January, Adalats were held at Kakinada and Rajahmundry where 50 pension cases and 20 issues related to GPF were resolved.' 'After Nellore, another Adalat will be conducted at Vinjamur in the same district. We are planning to hold Adalats at Bheemavaram and Amalapuram in the coming months. We are holding such meetings every quarter to cover all the districts of AP. The pension sanction documents will soon be provided electronically to retired government employees,' she informed. The Principal Accountant General said that every government employee should be aware of the documents that need to be attached with the application while sending pension proposals. She also said that there is no need to wait until retirement to send the said proposals. They can be sent three months in advance, Ms. Sarella said. She explained that many people are still sending pension proposals after retirement. Due to this, it has been noticed that the employees are upset that they have not been granted pension after retirement. From this month, the Electronic Pension Payment Order (EPPO) sanction documents will be provided electronically to employees retiring from few departments. A video has also been made on the procedure for submitting the application online, and this video will be made available to all employees. It explains the common mistakes made by employees. The sanction of pension is delayed mainly due to improper filling of nomination papers.
