UAE to host cricket tri-series ahead of T20 World Cup

Yahoo2 days ago
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The United Arab Emirates will host a Twenty20 tri-series including Afghanistan and Pakistan later this month as part of the teams' buildup for next year's T20 World Cup.
Sharjah will host all seven games of the tri-series, starting Aug. 29. Teams play against each other twice before the top two qualify for the final.
Pakistan and Afghanistan have already secured direct qualification for the T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. UAE could also qualify but it has to play ICC's Asia-East Asia and Pacific qualifiers in Oman in October.
Afghanistan, which finished seventh in the last T20 World Cup, hasn't played a T20 since a bilateral series against Zimbabwe late last year. Pakistan is currently playing a T20 series against West Indies in the United States.
The tri-series will be followed by the Asia Cup, also scheduled to be held in the UAE, from Sept. 9 when Afghanistan takes on Hong Kong in the opening game.

Al Hilal identify Liverpool's Darwin Nunez as priority target

Al Hilal have identified Darwin Nunez as their priority target to strengthen in attack and are now stepping up efforts aimed at landing the Liverpool striker. Nunez was wanted by another Saudi Arabian club — Al Nassr — during the January transfer window before Al Hilal were told the conditions of a deal after contacting Liverpool in June. Advertisement They heavily pursued Victor Osimhen, with Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko also among the options considered. But given Osimhen has joined Galatasaray, while Isak and Sesko look unattainable, Nunez is emerging as Al Hilal's main focus and internally they have accelerated plans to push for the Uruguay international's signing. Although Liverpool are yet to receive a bid, the interest has been registered and the wheels are in motion at Al Hilal's end. Nunez, 26, is viewed as a strong fit for head coach Simone Inzaghi's system and the 25-year-old is thought to be receptive to the possibility, should it develop. Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 in a deal worth up to €100million (£85m) after add-ons. He made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, but started just eight times in the Premier League. Liverpool have strengthened in forward areas this summer with the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Athletic reported on August 1 that Newcastle had rejected a formal £110million offer from Liverpool for Isak. The Athletic reported the following day that the Sweden international was set to return to the UK and resume training with Newcastle following a spell working individually at Real Sociedad.

Departing Son Heung-min in tears as Tottenham draws with Newcastle in Seoul

SEOUL, South Korea — A day after announcing his imminent departure from Tottenham after 10 years with the club, Son Heung-min was given an emotional farewell Sunday by his teammates, Newcastle players and almost 65,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. The pre-season friendly in South Korea between the Premier League teams ended 1-1, with the high point being Son's second-half exit in likely his last game for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was surrounded by both sets of players before eventually sitting on the bench in tears. 'First we had the walk around and then the teammates gathered around and he was emotional,' Tottenham coach Thomas Frank said. 'In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful.' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also paid tribute to the South Korea forward. 'The reaction was instinctive from my players. I think that speaks volumes about him,' Howe said. 'I think he's seen as one of the game's great Premier League players. It's not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years.' Son, who has been linked with a move to Los Angeles FC , scored 173 goals in 454 games for the London club but was unable to find the target in what Frank said is likely to be his last appearance. His trademark 'camera' goal celebration was, however, borrowed by Brennan Johnson who put Tottenham ahead after four minutes with a low shot from the edge of the area. Harvey Barnes leveled for Newcastle seven minutes before the break, cutting in from the left to fire powerfully home. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Tottenham's James Maddison was stretchered off after going down injured. 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before,' Frank said. The midfielder is likely to miss the UEFA Super Cup between Europa League winner Tottenham against Champions League victor Paris Saint-Germain on Aug. 13. The Premier League season starts two days later. ___ AP soccer:
