Petitions seeking financial aid dominate students' grievance camp

Officials said that many petitions received were from students and parents seeking financial support to attend college.
The camp was presided over by Madurai district collector M S Sangeetha, in the presence of Madurai district chief education officer A Renuka, and other officials. "This camp was conducted under the 'Naan Mudhalvan - Kalluri Kanavu' scheme to guide students regarding pursuing higher education.
Students are also being provided guidance on availing education loans and applying for scholarships. Demands to fulfil other basic needs students have are being looked into as well," said Sangeetha.
According to education department officials, a total of 57 grievance petitions were received on Thursday. "Most of the petitions were regarding availing financial aid for pursuing higher education. Some also sought help regarding applying for admissions in colleges.
Students who did not clear Class XII board exams were also given counselling for taking up supplementary exams," said an official.
The collector also launched the special control room at the collectorate for guidance on higher education. The help desk will function from Thursday onwards until Oct 25. Students from Madurai can contact 0452-2522995 or 7200647475 between 10am and 5pm daily to get guidance. Students can also reach the office of the Madurai chief education officer in Tallakulam.

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Nilgiris district administration, in association with the forest department, marked the International Day of Indigenous Peoples at a function held in the RCTC building in Ooty on Saturday. During the event, Ramachandran stated, 'The Nilgiris is home to six tribal communities, including the todas, kotas, kurumbas, paniyas, irulas and kattunayakans. The govt has established a special ward with 50 beds exclusively for these communities at the Ooty Government Medical College and Hospital.' The collector said, 'The govt offers various programmes and schemes aimed at improving the socio-economic status of the tribal communities in the state. Additionally, it provides essential amenities such as roads leading to their villages, healthcare centres, land titles (pattas) and community halls.' Around 1,002 houses had been constructed for members of the tribal communities at a cost of Rs 57.41 crore in the past one year under various govt housing initiatives, she said. A total of 43km of road connectivity to tribal hamlets is being developed with an investment of Rs.22 crore. Additionally, 1,025 tribal families have received land titles (pattas). "We conducted 32 health awareness programmes for tribal communities in the past one year. Additionally, 1,500 tribal students benefited from the Naan Mudhalvan programme," said Lakshmi. The govt had provided financial assistance totalling Rs 43 lakh, which includes a subsidy of Rs 15 lakh for tribal beneficiaries, she said. To commemorate the occasion, an exhibition showcasing the work of tribal communities was held at the RCTC. Meanwhile, a release from the Nilgiris Documentation Centre (NDC) on Saturday said while international researchers had long established that the indigenous people of the Nilgiris and their languages were originally Dravidians, there was no recognition for them by the Dravidian govts that ruled in Tamil Nadu. There was no govt policy to protect and preserve the rich legacy of the tribal people, it said. 'Economically, the minor tribes of the todas, kotas, irulas and kurumbas remain in a primitive state. The question of granting scheduled tribe status to the badagas, the largest indigenous group in the district, has been pending since 1989. There has been no serious effort by the state govt to pursue the case with the central government,' stated NDC founder Dharmalingam Venugopal in the release. Govt. NEET coaching classes to cover all 13 blocks in Madurai
Following the success of government-offered free NEET coaching classes which have yielded good results, the NEET classes are to be expanded to all the blocks in the district. Madurai district with 13 blocks, from the current academic year, will have a weekly NEET coaching class with all necessary facilities like study materials, daily exercises, personal guidance, among others in all the blocks, said S. Vennila Devi, district coordinator for government-sponsored NEET training. She added, 'Unlike previous years when the teachers would be appointed as volunteers, hereafter, the government school teachers who are willing to take weekly Saturday classes will be given a remuneration.' This would not only encourage more teachers to take up the task but would also help them in self-development, she added. As the programme falls under Naan Mudhalvan scheme, all the necessary study materials, daily and weekly test exercises would be taken care by the School Education Department, Ms. Vennila noted. While the classes were earlier provided in only three centres – Tirumangalam, Othakadai and Melur – in the district, by further decentralising it, more students from remote areas are believed to step up for taking up the classes, she observed. She said that in addition to NEET and JEE coaching, training for eight other competitive exams is to be provided to the students. As Madurai district has already witnessed an improvement in the number of students clearing NEET this year, by further expanding the training, chances of more students taking up the examination and more students clearing it in the upcoming years are high, she noted. In the recent NEET UG counselling, about seven government school students have secured admission in medical colleges under the 7.5% reservation, she pointed. C. Snega, who has secured admission in Madurai Medical College in her third attempt by scoring 487 marks, said that though she took training in private coaching classes, for two years before clearing it, the motivation came from the training offered through the district administration. 'I scored 192 in first attempt, 445 in second attempt and 487 in the final attempt. I did not even think that I would score close to 200 in first attempt, thanks to the one-year coaching provided by the schoolteachers,' she added. As she aims to specialise in cardiology, she said the strong foundation she developed through her training would help her come out with flying colours.

Thanjavur officials convince family, help Class 12 girl join college under Naan Mudhalvan scheme
A Class 12 student from a fishing community, who chose to support her family, was persuaded to join college at a special grievance redress and guidance session held under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme in Thanjavur on Wednesday. The meeting, part of the initiative's fourth phase, was chaired by District Collector P. Priyanka Pankajam at the Collectorate. The programme, which began on June 9, is aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education and career opportunities. During the session, K. Lavanya, a student of Adirampattinam Government Girls Higher Secondary School, became the focus of attention. Despite scoring 415 marks in the Class 12 board examinations, she was asked to take up work to support her family's income. Her school teacher Jepar Kavi, along with Chief Educational Officer Madhavan and school mentors, intervened in the matter. They met the family members and persuaded them to support Lavanya's educational aspirations. Within a brief time, Lavanya was admitted to course at an Arts and Science College, close to her residence.
