Cara Gainer wins playoff to claim first Ladies European Tour victory in Morocco
England's Cara Gainer secured her first Ladies European Tour (LET) victory after defeating India's Diksha Dagar in a playoff at Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco.
Going into the final day, only a two-shot difference separated the top 10, making it a tight leaderboard with lots of players in contention to win the season opener.
Gainer started the day in T5 and produced a solid final round of 69 (-4) at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. This marked her third visit to the tournament having previously come T30 in 2024 and T49 in 2023. The maiden LET winner will take the full 500 points to sit top of the Order of Merit.
The 29-year-old rolled in birdies on holes two, four, and eight, before another three off the bounce on the back nine. She dropped her only two shots of the day on the front nine.
'First tournament back of the year, you can't really ask for any better,' said Gainer. 'I was aware when we started how many people were in with a shout, but I knew there's a lot of good players. I knew people were going to be shooting low scores, so I just wanted to keep in my own bubble, and I thought if I had shot, maybe three or four under, there could be a chance. Then, when I started to birdie the last few, I thought hold on a minute, this could really be real.'
Talking about her final round, the 29 year-old said: 'I missed short putts on 11, 12, 13, and 14 which were all makeable putts, so was getting frustrated. Then we got to the par-five, where my caddy [Seb Brock] and I said we could still win this if we birdie. Then
from there I just kept racking them up, hitting really great iron shots, with straight up the hill putts so that was great.'
Gainer had her fiancé Seb Brock on the bag this week. She continued: 'He's come with me to caddy this week. It's really special to have him here and celebrate my first win with me.'
During the offseason, she analysed last season. Gainer had a bit of wrist injury during 2024 so was a tricky year but focused on what she needed to do to hit the perfect shot during the break.
Diksha Dagar came just short in the playoff to claim second place at the season opener. This still makes a very good start to Dagar's 2025 campaign, which saw her also set the clubhouse record on -9 with a stunning final round of 67 (-6).
Having started the day in T14, she made seven birdies across the last 18 holes, and dropped her only shot of the day on hole 14.
The 24-year-old has two LET victories to her name and will also be playing in next week's PIF Saudi Ladies International, along with Gainer.
Sweden's Kajsa Arwefjall finished the highest rookie and marks a solid start to her first LET season. The Swede clinched LETAS Order of Merit winner and Rookie of the Year last year so will be one to watch.
Tan, who came into the final round with a one-shot lead, finished eight-under-par after 54 holes. The Singaporean, who won the season opener last year in Kenya, had back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, with a further birdie on 15. The 20-year-old
dropped two shots on the front and back nine to finish in third place in a close leaderboard.
Two players finished in a share of fourth place on seven-under-par after the three rounds. Ireland's Lauren Walsh and Spain's Nuria Iturrioz.
Walsh had a stunning round of 68 (-5), one shot behind the clubhouse record, as she climbed 17 places on the final day.
'I got off a pretty solid start. I made a lot of nice pars, one or two birdies on the front nine,' said Ireland's 23-year-old. 'A little slip up on the par-five, but I got it going on the back nine, had a lot of really nice iron shots. I hit a lot of shots inside 10 feet and managed to convert three of them, left one or two out there.'
She continued: 'I'm really happy with how this week has gone, first week back in the office and to get in contention is always nice so very pleased with the week's work. I was sick to start out the week, so happy to be able fight back.'
Speaking about her offseason, Walsh said: 'My coach and I always look at the end of the year and how it's all gone – things I can improve on. For me, my putting was a huge part of that, my wedges also. I hit some really nice wedges today and this week so my coach will be happy with that. The putting has been coming along nice as well, held some nice ones this week. I just took some time off and worked hard.'
Iturrioz, the winner of the 2019 OMEGA Dubai Moonlight Classic, is familiar with this course and has a good track record with this tournament having won in 2016 and 2019. A top four finish for the Spaniard makes it another successful tournament in the books.
France's Nastasia Nadaud and England's Annabell Fuller both came in a tie for sixth place, having carded rounds of six-under-par across the three days at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.
England's Bronte Law, who won the 2024 edition, finished in a tie for eighth place alongside seven other players including France's Celine Herbin, Singapore's Aunchisa, Spain's Luna Sobron Galmes and Teresa Toscano, Sweden's Kajsa Arwefjall and Lisa Pettersson, and Germany's Aline Karuter.
This week the LET heads to Riyadh for the PIF Saudi Ladies International which takes place from Thursday 13th – Saturday 15th February, 2025.

Simbine wins 100m in photo finish thriller as Duplantis dominates
Akani Simbine won a thrilling 100m in a photo finish on Saturday at the second Diamond League meeting of the season while Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis dominated the pole vault but failed to break his own world record. South Africa's Simbine claimed victory in Keqiao, near Shanghai in China, by dipping under the line in 9.98 seconds, beating Jamaican Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson by a whisker (9.99). Simbine, who ran 9.90sec in Gaborone last month and won last week in the Diamond League opener in China's Xiamen (9.99), said he was 'not happy with the start'. 'It is just frustrating that I did not get it right today but I was at least able to make up for that mistake and get the win,' the 31-year-old said. Duplantis triumphed once more with minimum fuss. He failed in his three attempts to clear 6.28m, instead comfortably winning with a meeting-record 6.11m. The US-born Swede, who holds the world record of 6.27m, sat out three of the lower heights before taking a clear lead from Greece's Emmanouil Karalis. Duplantis struggled a week ago in Xiamen because of the wind -- though he still won. 'The jump did not feel that great and the run did not feel that great either,' he said in a warm and breezy Keqiao. 'So to have a good attempt while not feeling my best is actually a really good thing. I will keep working on my speed.' The 25-year-old double Olympic champion is building towards the world championships in Tokyo, where he is aiming for the hat-trick. He said: 'I am going to take another month with no competitions, just train hard and make sure I can build up to a really good, healthy and strong season leading into Tokyo in September.' Olympic and world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine won the high jump as the only woman to clear 2.00m. She also triumphed in Xiamen. 'I like my performance tonight,' she said. 'I improve it step by step on my competition from last week because now I jumped two metres at the first attempt.' Karsten Warholm underlined his superiority in the men's 400m hurdles but did not trouble his world record of 45.94 seconds, set at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Agencies

Ask Mina: Best striker on the European market and a tight race in Uefa Champions League
Each week sports reporter Mina Rzouki answers a selection of readers' questions submitted via social media. If you have a question for Mina, you can ask her on either X or Instagram – both @MinaRzouki. Q: Who is the best European striker on the market who could move on this summer? @Ben_ellis123 via Instagram A. There are many brilliant strikers but very few are available, and if they are, then it seems they're being linked to either Arsenal or Manchester United. A few weeks ago I wrote about Viktor Gyokeres, considered one of Arsenal's targets. The Sweden international has a contract until 2028 with Sporting, but the Lisbon club are apparently willing to listen to offers that could see him depart this summer. According to UK media, however, it is Manchester United who have edged ahead and appear closer to securing a deal, reuniting the player with his former boss Ruben Amorim. United have scored two goals in their past five league games and we have yet to see the best of either Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee. The prevailing thought is that United need a striker better equipped to execute Amorim's tactical ideals. There are others likely to garner plenty of interest. Alexander Isak has had a sensational season, scoring 22 goals and six assists in 31 Premier League games for Newcastle United. The Swede is considered one of the best strikers in the world and has caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs including Barcelona and Liverpool. His all-round game, ability to win possession in the final third, high sprint speed and incredible ability to produce in the big moments have seen him talked about incessantly. Newcastle appear confident of keeping their talisman but is the player tempted to leave? According to his advisors, Isak wants to focus on ending the season well and will then take the time to consider his options. Barcelona have also been linked. My initial thought was that the Catalans wouldn't be able to afford him, considering their well-documented financial woes. But they've already won two trophies this season – the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey – and are favourites to win the Uefa Champions League and La Liga, which would provide the additional funds they so desperately need. Victor Osimhen remains one of the most in-demand forwards in European football. He has registered 22 goals and five assists in the Turkish league for Galatasaray in 23 starting appearances and scored six goals in seven Europa League matches. He is a beast in front of goal and while his style of play is often cited as a contributing factor to frequent injuries, his insatiable thirst for goals, pace and athleticism always makes the difference. It was his confidence that Luciano Spalletti felt inspired the Napoli dressing room, leading to their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2023. The Nigerian is a known admirer of the Premier League and Chelsea as well as Manchester United have been credited with an interest. Q: Who could win the Uefa Champions League and your reasoning behind your choice? @Rozario_11 via Instagram A. Usually I can pick a winner by the time we reach the semi-final stage (I get it wrong but I still pick one!) but I'm genuinely struggling to decide which team will come out on top from these semi-finals, let alone the overall winner. After the quarter-finals, I was left stunned by the strength of all four teams. The level was high and there were no clear favourites. However, two weeks is a long time in football and now all I see are concerning vulnerabilities. Inter Milan were dreaming of a treble only a few weeks ago and were even targeting the Club World Cup trophy in the summer. But their dream has turned into a nightmare in the space of a few days as they have seemingly collapsed at exactly the wrong moment. A draw to Parma followed by three losses in a row saw them knocked out of the Coppa Italia and left them trailing Napoli by three points in Serie A. Their season is in jeopardy, and they could potentially end the season with no trophies at all. The club famed for their defensive strength look to have run out of gas and don't boast the squad depth to allow them to compete in so many different competitions. Without Marcus Thuram upfront, they not only lack speed but a solid alternative to play alongside Lautaro Martinez. Their performances in the final 20 minutes of recent games have proved concerning, conceding 11 times. Coach Simone Inzaghi has been blamed for not transmitting the right mentality but it's worth noting that Inter have played a ridiculous amount of games this season. Supporters cannot continue to expect miracles from a side that doesn't have enough healthy options to rotate. Barcelona may be leading La Liga and favourites to win the Champions League, but their risky style of defending leaves them exposed far too often. Against Celta Vigo, their defensive vulnerabilities were laid bare and the performances of Frenkie de Jong are a concern. Borussia Dortmund showed in the quarter-finals how to consistently threaten Barca, and it remains to be seen how they will cope in the semi-finals without talisman and top-scorer Robert Lewandowski. However, the club boast a world-class fitness coach in Julio Tous who has ensured the team play at optimum levels deep into the season while Hansi Flick has changed mentalities in that dressing room. This is a side that can stage a comeback and they believe in their chances to turn a game, just like they did against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final and against Celta Vigo. Arsenal boast the best defence and know how to stifle opponents. They were nothing short of exceptional against Real Madrid. However, they did look defensively shaky against Crystal Palace and can lose focus in critical moments of a match. I imagine we'll see the best version of them in the semis but I'm not sure they have enough to beat genuinely complete teams. As for Paris Saint-Germain, this is a very young squad and when they focus, they are unbeatable. They can dominate, create and look defensively sound, too. But after winning the French league with six games to spare, they have dropped attention and have started losing games. That's to be expected, but Luis Enrique played his best players over the weekend and they still lost 3-1 to Nice despite producing 32 shots and controlling possession. The way they dropped their focus against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals second leg set off warning bells, too. The game is never over until the final whistle. PSG have been so stunning to watch since December and if they show the levels exhibited against Liverpool during their Champions League last-16 ties then they have a real chance of doing something special. It remains to be seen if they can finish with aplomb because despite how much they dominate and create, they don't score as frequently as they should. Q: Where do you see Kevin De Bruyne ending up now that his run at Manchester City is over? Fred Hamsayeh via Linkedin A. Pep Guardiola has already said how hard it will be to say goodbye to the City legend. Said to be keen on playing at a high level, De Bruyne will have several options despite his age and his high salary demands. Should he want to stay in England then I imagine the Belgian would have to consider a pay cut. Aston Villa have been heavily linked to the player, but they have a lot on their plate as they assess the future of players such as Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio. A lot will depend on whether they qualify for Europe next season, to better understand how much money they have to spend to satisfy the needs of coach Unai Emery. Villa are ambitious and are consistently looking to improve. Chelsea famously let go of De Bruyne only to watch him go on to become a Premier League great. De Bruyne featured in nine matches for Chelsea in the 2013/14 season before transferring to Wolfsburg and the Blues are reported to be considering a bid. However, I do not see this happening – how would a 33-year-old De Bruyne fit into a team built around Cole Palmer? A move to the US has also been touted. Major League Soccer uses a "discovery rights" system, allowing each club to designate up to five players on a list, thereby securing exclusive negotiating rights with those players and avoiding competition from other teams within the league. Inter Miami have apparently signed him to their list. That doesn't mean that they are planning to negotiate with the player, it could just be a ploy to try to block their competition from reaching out to the player. The Belgian was linked to Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad last season. The league continues to grow and attract attention and is proving more competitive each year. The kingdom remains a potential destination.

GolfSixes League debuts in India, paving the way for future champions
India got its first taste of the fast-paced GolfSixes format on Monday as young golfers from across the country competed in the inaugural GolfSixes League at DLF Golf and Country Club, just days before the Hero Indian Open. The event, a collaboration between The Indian Golf Union (IGU) and The R&A, is part of a broader initiative to introduce junior golfers to a dynamic, team-based version of the sport. Aimed at expanding the grassroots game in India, the format provides an engaging and competitive environment for children aged 12 and under. Six teams, each representing a different state, battled it out over six holes, showcasing both skill and sportsmanship. Punjab emerged victorious, while Haryana and Uttar Pradesh finished second and third, respectively. Designed by The R&A, in partnership with the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG), the Ryder Cup European Development Trust (RCEDT), DP World Tour, and Ladies European Tour, the GolfSixes League has already made a mark in Europe, Africa, and other regions. Now, with its introduction to India, it is set to offer young golfers an exciting new pathway into the game. 'This initiative aligns perfectly with our goal of promoting golf and making it more accessible,' said IGU President Brijinder Singh. 'GolfSixes is an engaging and easy-to-understand format that is ideal for young players and beginners. We're excited to support its growth in India.' Neal Graham, Regional Development Manager – Middle East, Central Asia & India at The R&A, emphasized the format's impact on junior participation. 'GolfSixes League has proven to be a successful development tool, helping young golfers transition from practice to competitive play in a fun and inclusive environment. We hope to see similar growth in India as we have in other parts of the world.' With the backing of The R&A and the IGU's commitment to fostering young talent, GolfSixes League is set to become a key part of India's long-term golf development strategy.
