Liverpool legend pays touching Diogo Jota tribute on first match at Anfield since tragedy
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson led an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota as the Reds returned to Anfield for the first time since his death. The Portuguese forward died in a tragic car accident in Spain alongside his brother last month.
Tributes flooded in from across the footballing world, with fans leaving their flowers and memories outside of Anfield. Arne Slot 's side played their first game at Anfield since Jota's passing on Monday evening.
They took on Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in a double-header - a game that represented Liverpool 's final pre-season game ahead of the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley.
The game also represented an opportunity for Anfield to pay tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Liverpool icon Thompson took to the pitch alongside Bilbao president Jon Uriarte to lay a wreath.
The pair laid the wreaths in front of the goal at the Kop end of Anfield, with Kenny Dalglish doing similar in Hong Kong, while Ian Rush also did the same in Yokohama. During Thompson's latest tribute, fans chanted and sang Jota's song.
The game was also stopped in the 20th minute for a round of applause, while Jota's song was a regular soundtrack across the stadium. The recent tributes come after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had written a touching message to Jota in Liverpool's programme ahead of taking on Bilbao.
"It has, of course, been a very challenging time," the defender wrote. "First and foremost for Diogo and Andre's family, for Rute and the kids. They are the people who must always come first in all of this. We must never forget that, and we cannot imagine their pain in this moment.
"It is still a bit surreal, to be honest, but we are coping in the best way possible as a team, and we are all trying to do the best job we can in order to get through this really difficult time.
"With everything that happened, it has been strange having to now try to carry on with work, with football. We will never forget Diogo, of course, but we just have to try to honour his memory. That's what we try to do each and every day.
"I always come back to the fact that we have to look after Diogo's family, his parents, and that's the main thing. You think about so many different things, and it's difficult to process. You can't imagine the pain, the feeling that they have. That's why we try to be there as much as we can, and for each other as well.
"That's also why it is very important that we honour and carry on his legacy, not only for now and the next couple of months, but for as long as we can, because that is what he deserves."

Manchester City experienced a lull last term and begin a year without Kevin De Bruyne for the first time in a decade. Despite adding reinforcements Shearer hasn't backed Pep Guardiola and Co. to regain their crown, instead picking them in third. Their cross-city rivals, Manchester United, reached new lows last term and have signed some notable names in attack, as Ruben Amorim aims to seriously improve their fortunes. The pundit is predicting a better year but still not one where they return to the Champions League. Instead, he feels Chelsea and Newcastle - two clubs with very different experiences this summer - will both finished above the Red Devils. Newcastle's year may hinge on whether Isak stays or if they get in a top class replacement. Chelsea meanwhile have not struggled to get firepower through the door. Last year's surprise package, Nottingham Forest, will have to combine their domestic efforts with Europa League football. That will be a new challenge but Shearer still believes they will still be a top half side. Tottenham have embarked on a new era, sacking Ange Postecoglou despite his European success. Thomas Frank has a tough job on his hands but Shearer has backed them to finish in eighth, narrowly behind Aston Villa. The Midlands club have benefited from having Unai Emery at the helm but with so much competition at the top they've been tipped to fall again. Brentford now have Keith Andrews at the helm and have been backed to narrowly avoid the drop, finishing just above the bottom three in 17th. West Ham too have been tipped to have a difficult year despite Graham Potter getting a first full season in charge in London. Backlash as travel operator tells Everton fans 'get your steps in'
There has been backlash from Everton fans after they were told to "get their steps in" by a transport operator and walk about 30 minutes to the club's new ground. Merseytravel has suggested supporters could walk to the Hill Dickinson stadium on Saturday for the friendly against AS Roma from Moorfields station in Liverpool town fans are expected to use Sandhills train station, which is closer to the new ground, but the operator has warned it would be "extremely busy".The suggestion of walking from further out has been met with ridicule online, with some calling it "embarrassing" and a "shambles". The friendly, which kicks off at 15:00 BST, is the final test event at the new ground and will be the first time the 52,769-seater venue will be operating at near full test events at the ground left many fans concerned at the lack of public transport and a parking scheme in streets around the ground has also led to confusion and a post on X Merseytravel said: "Heading to the Everton v AS Roma double-header this weekend? "Everton Stadium is just 30 mins walk from Moorfields station – a great opportunity to get your steps in for the day and soak up the atmosphere for the big game!" Darwin Nunez set to leave Liverpool to join Al-Hilal
Darwin Núñez is on the brink of leaving Liverpool after talks over a £46million move to the Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. A deal between the clubs is set to be finalised after Núñez indicated he would accept a switch that would bring an end to three fitful years at Anfield. Simone Inzaghi's Al-Hilal and AC Milan had both registered their interest in the Uruguayan, but it is the Saudi club who have pressed ahead with matters. Al-Hilal are at present at a training camp in Germany before their new season and beat TSG Balingen 6-1 in a friendly on Wednesday night. Liverpool expect Núñez will now fly out to undergo a medical and complete the transfer. A three-year contract has been prepared for him. Napoli had been looking to sign Núñez, 26, earlier in the window but Liverpool's asking price was too high for them. The Merseyside club had originally been seeking around the €70million mark (£60.6million), a figure that was rejected following an approach from Al-Nassr at the end of the January window when priority was given to winning the Premier League rather than trimming Arne Slot's squad. However, it is likely that for a deal to be finalised the initial figure will be significantly lower at about €53million. Add-ons would top up the fee. Liverpool paid an initial fee of £64million, that could rise to £85million, for Núñez in the summer of 2022, in a transfer that was pushed by former manager Jürgen Klopp after the player had impressed in two Champions League games for Benfica against the club. Various bonuses were included, but the top-line figure of £85 million would only have been paid if the club had won the Champions League. Despite his popularity in sections of the fan base, Núñez has not proved a reliable asset. There was hope that Slot could bring the best out of the forward when he was appointed last summer, but Núñez scored just seven goals and by the end of the campaign had been pushed onto the periphery of Liverpool's plans. Two of those came away in a late 2-0 win over Brentford back in January which was an important victory in the club's march to the title and, in many respects, summed up why there remained a fondness for him among supporters. The departure of Núñez would continue the overhaul of Slot's squad with Harvey Elliott, who has attracted attention from RB Leipzig, and Federico Chiesa also looking to leave. Luís Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton, Nat Phillips and Trent Alexander-Arnold have already left since the end of last season and a £46million move for Núñez would take player sales to around £190million.
