Retired police officer, the father of a firefighter, dies in Revere, Massachusetts house fire

A house fire in Massachusetts ended in tragedy Tuesday. Richard Serino, a retired Revere police officer and father of a Revere firefighter, died. He was 77 years old. The fire started just after 4:30 p.m. and quickly spread through the multifamily home on Washington Avenue. Firefighters found Serino inside and carried him out. He was rushed to CHA Everett Hospital where he died. "Beloved in our community" "This is a very sad day for the Revere Fire Department and the City of Revere," Acting Revere Fire Chief James Cullen said in a statement Wednesday. "Mr. Serino was beloved in our community. He served as a US Marine and a Revere Police officer for many years, and his son is a Revere firefighter. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and many loved ones." Serino was with the department for 34 years, from 1979 to 2013, according to Interim Revere Police Chief Maria LaVita. "He was quick-witted and always smiling. We will miss him immensely," she said. No one else was hurt in the fire. There's no word on how or where it started, but the state fire marshal's office said there was no evidence that it was intentionally set. Richard Serino died in the fire at his home in Revere, Massachusetts on June 17, 2025. CBS Boston "Shining example of selflessness" Serino was honored last month at the State House in Boston as a part of Military Appreciation Day. Massachusetts State Representative Jessica Giannino wrote this tribute to him on Facebook that day: "Richie enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967, serving during the Vietnam era and stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he was tasked with the solemn responsibility of processing the belongings of fallen Marines. After being honorably discharged as a Sgt. E-5, he returned home to Revere and continued his service for over 30 years as a patrolman with the Revere Police Department, well known as the city's motorcycle traffic officer." "Richie is a shining example of selflessness, patriotism, and commitment to community. From his decades of public service to the seasonal lawn displays that continue to lift spirits in the neighborhood, Richie reminds us what it means to serve with heart and humility. Thank you, Richie, for your service to our country and your lifelong dedication to the people of Revere."

Candlelight vigil at Minnesota State Capitol will honor Mark and Melissa Hortman

What the parents of assassinated Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman have to say What the parents of assassinated Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman have to say What the parents of assassinated Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman have to say Lawmakers and the public will gather at the Minnesota State Capitol Wednesday night to honor Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, who were fatally shot over the weekend in what authorities called a political assassination. A candlelight vigil for the Hortmans will take place on the steps of the Capitol from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the Minnesota House announced. Anyone attending is asked to bring their own candle and refrain from bringing any signs. There will be no speakers at the event, but Gov. Tim Walz's office said he plans to attend the vigil. The Hortmans were shot and killed at their Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, home around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, officials said. The man accused of their killings, Vance Boelter, faces federal and state charges. He is also accused of shooting Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who both survived, and allegedly visited at least two other lawmakers' homes. Hortman was in her 11th term in the Minnesota Legislature, having first been elected in 2004. She served as speaker emerita of the House, and Walz called her "the most consequential Speaker in state history." In an interview with CBS News, Melissa Hortman's mother Lisa Haluptzok said the pain of her daughter's death is "mind-numbing." "It's been very hard the last few days," her father Patrick Haluptzok said. "In what seems unfair and tragic, the way her last night was spent. We're just trying to get by." The Hortmans' children, Sophie and Colin, said they were "devastated and heartbroken," but offered ways for the public to honor their memory, including planting a treee, petting a dog and standing up for what you believe in, "especially if that thing is justice and peace." The Hortmans received a formal procession through the Twin Cities on Tuesday. Funeral details have not yet been announced.

L.A. County family says immigration agents detained son who is a U.S. citizen

Hundreds in a Los Angeles County neighborhood took to the streets to protest after immigration agents detained a 20-year-old outside a Pico Rivera Walmart on Tuesday. The young man who was wrestled to the ground, Adrian Andrew Martinez, is a U.S. citizen, according to his family. A video of the incident shows Martinez, in a blue Walmart vest, appearing to talk to the Customs and Border Patrol agents before one of them pushed him back. In the middle of the exchange, the man who was recording, Oscar Preciado, had his phone knocked out of his hand. After picking it up to start recording again, Preciado captured the federal agents wrestling Martinez to the ground. Preciado said the agents tried to grab him, too. "He grabbed me by the neck and put the other hand behind my leg," Preciado said. "Luckily, I was able to get him off of me and kept recording ... I told him I'm recording this and that's when he smacked my hand to get my phone out of my hand." According to Preciado, the encounter with immigration agents happened in a Walmart parking lot on Washington Boulevard after Martinez stood up for an older man federal agents had detained. Martinez insisted they needed a warrant to arrest the man. Preciado added that he only saw Martinez talking to the agents. Preciado works for a delivery service and talks to Martinez every day while picking up orders at Walmart. He recalled a crowd shouting, "he's a U.S. citizen," while agents arrested Martinez. "They kept trying to get us back away when they realized there was like 10 of us that were recording," Preciado said. "Some other guys from an unmarked vehicle came out of it with their guns in their hands, pointing at us and everything." Martinez's family said they don't know where federal agents took the 20-year-old. They went to a federal detention center and were told he was not there, but that he is likely going to be charged with assaulting a federal officer. KCAL News has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Walmart for comment, but has not received responses.
