Prowling, growling ‘panther man' could be next Somerset Gimp, say residents
The figure, who residents call 'panther man', has been filmed wriggling under fences near the Derby Pool Harvester in Wallasey on the Wirral, and seen making 'growling' noises at passers-by trying to enjoy the nearby beach.
Some residents believe he could be like Joshua Hunt, known as the Somerset Gimp, who menaced people in locations across the county on at least 25 separate occasions over five years before he was stopped in 2023.
In November of that year, Hunt, then 32, appeared in court, and was banned from 'crawling, wriggling or writhing on the ground' in a full-body suit for five years.
In Wallasey, the mysterious 'panther man' has been described by residents as an 'urban jaguar', 'banshee', and a 'gimp', dressed in a dark figure-hugging suit and a cat mask. After the grainy footage of him emerged, The Telegraph went to the Wirral to find out more.
Abbie Gilbert described how she 'heard a man making cat noises', and shone her torch to find the figure 'waving his arms at me before crawling up the hill' while she was out walking her dog on a Sunday evening.
She told The Telegraph: 'I didn't really find him to be a threat, just a bit bizarre. He didn't approach me, he just made some weird poses and then scarpered off.
'I see strange things on the Wirral all the time so it wasn't too much of a shock, it was actually quite amusing. In all honesty, I think he's just doing it for a laugh, I don't think it's anything malicious.'
But others have compared the mystery figure to Hunt, who was made the subject of a sexual risk order after women in Somerset reported him grabbing his crotch as he confronted them.
One dog walker who visited the beach on Friday said: 'I know in Somerset a few years ago, there was a guy dressing up in a gimp suit frightening people, and I'm worried the same is going to start happening here. If you were a female or elderly, it would be quite frightening.
'He's probably not all right. Maybe the police need to check on him.'
Clutching his cavapoo, Minnie, dog walker Rob Riley, 62, said: 'I've never seen a fellow dressed as a cat. But if I did I'd set the dog on him.'
Kerry Blackmore, who uses the beach to walk her dog, said: 'It's creepy. I'd turn around and walk the other way. He [Rolo, her Jack Russell] would probably run the other way too.'
A couple of miles down the coast, in the seaside resort of New Brighton, opinion was split.
Paul Bowie, owner of the Wirral Model Shop, said: 'Someone is doing it for a bit of a laugh. It's great for the area. If he's not going to attack anyone, then it's brilliant.
'There have been weird things going on here back to the 19th century. Although back then it was murder.'
He is referring to an 1890 incident in New Brighton – still notorious in these parts – when Felix Spicer, a local father, killed his two sons.
Maureen Grimshaw, 75, who was visiting Mr Bowie's shop with her husband Jim after a cycle ride, was less enthused about the mystery figure's antics. She fears the unknown person could be dangerous, saying: 'What if he kills someone? That wouldn't be ideal, would it?'
At the Ship Hotel pub a few doors down, conversation has turned to who is behind the mask. Theories are thrown about but nobody is certain.
'It's just an 'eejit',' said Tony Fisher, 35, as he sat at the bar with a pint. 'I can't imagine it's anything sinister. Things like this happen in London but not here. Nothing happens around here.'
No investigation, say police
There are believed to have been three sightings so far.
But despite residents' concerns, Merseyside Police is not investigating. A force spokesman said no reports had been received and 'as far as we are aware no crime has been committed'.
In a car park near the beach, The Telegraph waited for several hours, until midnight, in the hope of a sighting. But the 'panther man' never appeared.
For now, at least, the mysterious figure's intentions and identity remain a mystery.

Ice cream man stabbed to death in north-west London named by police
An ice cream seller who was stabbed to death in north-west London has been named by the Metropolitan Police as 41-year-old Shazad Khan. Mr Khan was pronounced dead at the scene after officers responded to reports of an altercation in Monks Park in Wembley at 6.10pm on Tuesday. His family have been informed and a murder investigation was launched, the Met said. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of Wednesday, while a 31-year-old woman was also arrested at the scene for conspiracy to murder, the force said. Both individuals remain in custody. Local residents told the PA news agency that Mr Khan was well known in the area for selling ice creams in a van. Asim Mahmood Butt, 39, who lives in nearby Tokyngton Avenue, said he was childhood friends with the victim. Speaking at the scene, he said: 'I got a call from one of my cousins. 'This guy, we know him – he's a famous ice cream guy. He got stabbed yesterday. 'I came here and his body was still here, and police had cordoned off the area. 'We don't know the reason why, but all that we know is that a guy with a grey hoodie stabbed him eight times. That's what I've been told. 'I know his brothers as well – they're all local. We all used to play cricket and football here in Monks Park. 'He started (selling) ice cream about a year ago.' Mr Butt said the victim was married and had a young daughter. The victim's ice cream van, which had been parked on the road at the time of the incident, was well known locally for having a large teddy bear, the witness added. A second witness, who did not want to be named, said the ice cream van was towed away from the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A blue forensics tent and a number of Met officers could be seen inside a police cordon in Monks Park on Wednesday afternoon. Removal vehicles also took away a separate white van and blue car. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, local policing commander for north-west London, said: 'Our thoughts remain with Shazad's family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. 'This incident will rightly cause concern across the community, but intelligence at this stage leads us to believe there is no wider threat to the public. 'Detectives are conducting a thorough and fast-paced investigation, and locals can expect to see an uptick in police presence in the area. 'Anyone with any information – particularly dashcam or doorbell footage from the time of the incident – is urged to speak to us as a matter of urgency.'

Labour MSP is charged over indecent images: Colin Smyth suspended by party after arrest
The Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth has been arrested and charged with the possession of indecent images of children. The party has suspended the former modern studies teacher, who served as Scottish Labour's top official before entering Holyrood in 2016, and withdrawn the whip. Mr Smyth said he was in 'shock' and was cooperating with the authorities. A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: 'On Tuesday, 5 August, 2025, officers executed a warrant at a property in Dumfries. 'A 52-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date.' The married father-of-two is now sitting as an Independent MSP for South Scotland. In a statement, Mr Smyth said: 'These events have come as a shock and this is a deeply stressful time. 'I am obviously cooperating fully with any inquiries and hope the matter can be resolved quickly. 'I am not able to comment further at this stage, and in the meantime I would ask that my family and friends are given privacy.' A Scottish Labour spokesman said: 'The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. 'We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' It is understood the MSP was 'administratively suspended' after the party became aware of the police investigation. Mr Smyth appeared in a video with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar which was posted on social media two days after the arrest, but it has since been deleted. In the week after the arrest, Mr Smyth's own account on X continued to post pictures of him meeting people at the Dumfries & Lockerbie Agricultural Show held on August 2. On August 13, he held a meeting with the Scottish Pensioners' Forum, and on August 15 held a 'doorstep surgery' with a Dumfries Labour councillor about roads and bus services. Born in Dumfries, Mr Smyth was first elected for Labour as a Dumfries & Galloway councillor in 2007. He served as Scottish Labour general secretary from 2008 until 2012, and helped run its disastrous 2011 election campaign, when the SNP won an unprecedented majority. He was elected to Holyrood for the first time in 2016 as a list MSP for South Scotland. He backed Mr Sarwar in the 2021 Scottish Labour leadership race and was given a key role as the party's spokesman on the constitution as the SNP ramped up efforts to secure a second referendum and end the Union. Mr Smyth, whose family hails from Northern Ireland, stood unsuccessfully against the Tories in Dumfriesshire in 2021 election, but he returned to Holyrood via the regional list. In 2023, Mr Sarwar made him his champion for older people and he is currently piloting a member's Bill through Holyrood to establish a Commissioner for Older People. Mr Smyth was re-selected in April as Scottish Labour's candidate in Dumfriesshire for the 2026 Holyrood election. But his suspension means he is currently unable to stand for the party. ' Rudakubana is cock-a-hoop about the change but I doubt the officer who had liquid chucked in his face will be.' Reform MP Richard Tice said: 'I'm appalled. 'It feels like he is being rewarded for bad behaviour. 'It's the opposite of what should be happening.' Met Police are still investigating May's scalding incident.
