Ex-ASML, NXP employee sentenced to three year jail term for sharing corporate secrets

CNA10-07-2025
ROTTERDAM :A Dutch court on Thursday sentenced a former employee of semiconductor firms ASML and NXP to three years in prison for sharing sensitive company technology with a contact in Russia, in violation of European Union sanctions. The District Court of Rotterdam found the 43-year-old man, German Aksenov, guilty of computer intrusion and illegally providing technical assistance to Russia.
"NXP has a zero-tolerance policy towards data theft and embezzlement. We cooperated with the prosecutor's offices throughout this process", NXP told Reuters in an email.
ASML was not immediately available to comment.
Aksenov was arrested in August 2023 and has remained in custody since. Prosecutors had initially accused Aksenov of selling stolen design manuals for cash and having contact with Russia's FSB intelligence service.
However, the court's final sentence was one year less than the four years prosecutors had demanded, as it could not be proven that Aksenov had been paid for sharing the confidential business information.

Turkey aims to hold 5G frequency tender in October, minister says

ISTANBUL :Turkey plans to launch a long-awaited 5G frequency tender in October with initial service expected to be available in 2026, its transport and infrastructure minister said on Tuesday. Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Turkey had consulted with its three major telecom operators and studied global 5G models, particularly in Europe. All three operators - government-controlled Turkcell and Turk Telekom along with Vodafone's Turkish unit - are expected to take part in the tender. "We aim to publish the tender specifications this month and hold the tender in October," he said in a ministry statement. "Our goal is to expand 5G across the entire country within a few years after the initial signal is received in 2026." Uraloglu had previously said he hoped to hold the tender in August. According to a presidential decree published on Turkey's official gazette on Saturday, the tender will include 11 frequency packages across the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands, with individual package values ranging from $50 million to $425 million. The decree set the minimum price for the available frequency packages at $2.13 billion. The tender will also see the government roll over existing mobile network licenses, which are currently set to expire in 2029. Operators will be required to pay 5 per cent of their yearly revenues to roll over the licenses.

Xiaomi's second-quarter revenue up 30.5%, boosted by smartphones

BEIJING :A rise in sales of smartphones, especially in Southeast Asia, helped to boost Xiaomi's second-quarter revenue by 30.5 per cent, the smartphone and EV company said on Tuesday. Revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was 116 billion yuan ($16.16 billion), beating the 114.7 billion yuan average of 15 analyst estimates compiled by LSEG. Adjusted net profit rose 75.4 per cent year-on-year to 10.8 billion yuan, exceeding the average estimate of 10.1 billion yuan, according to LSEG data. The world's third-largest smartphone maker became the bestselling smartphone brand in Southeast Asia in the second quarter and took second place by shipments in Europe, it said. Its EV business, meanwhile, generated 20.6 billion yuan in revenue during the second quarter, up from 18.1 billion during the first quarter. It delivered 81,302 EVs in the June quarter, compared with deliveries of 75,869 SU7 cars in January-March. Its second EV model YU7 was launched in late June, with the deliveries only beginning last month, meaning it has yet to be reflected in results. Its EV, AI and other new initiatives reported a total net loss of 0.3 billion yuan in the June quarter, narrowing from a loss of 0.5 billion in the first quarter. Hong Kong-listed shares in Xiaomi, which also makes home appliances, closed down 1.2 per cent at 52.4 Hong Kong dollars. The stock has risen 52 per cent so far this year.

Oil prices fall as Ukraine talks raise prospect of sanctions easing

LONDON :Oil prices fell on Tuesday as traders weighed the possibility that talks between Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. to end the war in Ukraine could lead to the lifting of sanctions on Russian crude, raising supply. Brent crude futures fell 48 cents, or 0.72 per cent, to $66.12 a barrel by 0820 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery, set to expire on Wednesday, fell 40 cents, or 0.63 per cent, to $63.02 per barrel. The more active October WTI contract was down 46 cents, or 0.73 per cent, at $62.24 a barrel. Prices settled around 1 per cent higher in the previous session. Following a White House meeting on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European allies, U.S. President Donald Trump announced in a social media post that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said arrangements were being made for a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy, which could lead to a trilateral summit involving all three leaders. "Oil prices are largely responding to outcomes of recent meetings between Trump-Putin and Trump-Zelenskiy, and while no outright peace deal or ceasefire seems imminent, there has been some progress made," Suvro Sarkar, lead energy analyst at DBS Bank, said. "Chances of further escalation or intensification of sanctions on Russia from the U.S. or Europe may be off the table for now." Sarkar also noted that Trump's softened stance on secondary sanctions targeting importers of Russian oil has reduced the risk of global supply disruptions, easing geopolitical tensions slightly. Zelenskiy described his talks with Trump as "very good" and noted discussions about U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump confirmed the U.S. would provide such guarantees, though the extent of support remains unclear. Trump has pressed for a quick end to Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, but Kyiv and its allies worry he could seek to force an agreement on Russia's terms. "An outcome which would see a ratcheting down of tensions and remove threats of secondary tariffs or sanctions would see oil drift lower toward our $58 per barrel Q4-25/Q1-26 average target," Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy at TD Securities, said in a note.
