World Champion Gukesh acknowledges the massive achievement of Divya Deshmukh: 'It is not easy to win the tournament'
In a span of just two years, Indian chess has soared to the exosphere. Whether it's the Olympiad, the World Championship, or the FIDE World Cup, the Indian flag is flying high in every aspect of the Chess bloc. After D Gukesh's historic World Championship victory, all eyes are on Divya Deshmukh, who is making similar strides in the women's category.
The 19-year-old recently clinched the FIDE Women's World Cup, held in Batumi, Georgia, and qualified for the Candidates tournament. Moreover, she also completed the last norm required to become a Grandmaster and claimed the title in the best way possible.

Gukesh acknowledges Divya's massive achievement
As class often recognises class, Divya's ascension has been noted by Gukesh, who also had a few things to say about the achievement of India's newest Grandmaster.
'We (Gukesh and Divya) basically grew up together. We played in the same tournaments right from when we were eight or nine years old. The way Divya won the World Cup was really inspiring. It is not easy to win the tournament, you have to play regularly for a month. I have played the World Cup two times, so I know how difficult it is to win,' Gukesh said in a Velammal Nexus event that was organised to felicitate Mount Everest conqueror Ashish.
'Both of them (Divya and losing finalist, veteran Koneru Humpy) played amazingly well. For Indian chess, it is important that we have good results in both men (open) and women."
Having played the FIDE World Cup twice, World Champion Gukesh will aim to win the whole thing when he takes part in the tournament, slated to take place later in the year in India.
'For sure, I will take part in the World Cup. I am really excited and looking forward to it. In chess, we do not have many knockout events, so the World Cup is the biggest knockout tournament. After the Olympiad (in 2022), India hosting a big event is important for Indian chess,' added Gukesh, who will be gunning for his maiden WC trophy.
Given Divya has already bagged the prize, India will complete a World Cup double should Gukesh or any other contender from India go on to win the competition.

He could have walked outside The Oval with his bat held high alongwith Joe Root who broke records after records and could have won the series 3-1 for England but he played reckless shot and it was his punished of that was why England lost the match and ended up drawing the series,' said Ashwin on his YouTube show Ash ki baat. 'As a captain, as a coach, you can proclaim to the world that this is your brand of cricket. They can say that Brook played the way we wanted him to play. He embraced our beliefs. All of this is easier said than done but Test cricket needs a certain amount of balance. Yes, I agree that this approach did get you runs in the first innings but in the fourth innings, if you are playing on 100 and the finish line is in sight, then it is your responsibility to see your team through,' he added. Ashwin went on to say that England disrespected cricketing gods and that was why the conditions changed in favour of Indian pacers out of nowhere. 'Brook definitely missed that opportunity and it all fell on Root's shoulders and for India's good, the conditions also changed, and such things happen when the cricketing gods are disrespected. The way England disrespected the cricketing gods, even the clouds came together, cried on the pitch and allowed the ball to move a lot,' said Ashwin.

When I was going to bed (after day 4), I was only thinking about 'how could I drop it'. "Had I taken that catch, we wouldn't have had to come out and play on Monday. We would have been in the room relaxed. But the Almighty had something else in store for us. He brought us to the stadium on Monday and the result is in front of everyone," Siraj said. Siraj had stumbled on to the ropes while collecting Brook's catch at fine leg on day four, which would have turned the game decisively for India. Jasprit Bumrah, who did not play the series decider due to workload management, was released from the squad during the game. "There were no celebrations last night. It has been a long and hectic series. The players spent time on their own or with families. Most of the players are heading back to India, some are heading elsewhere," said a BCCI source. Drawing the series in England was a big achievement for Gill and his inexperienced team, following the high profile retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Fair to say the team has moved on from two superstars. India's next major assignment will the Asia Cup in the UAE next month.
