
How Airplane Toilets Could Help Track 'Silent Pandemic'

Aircraft toilets could become a powerful early warning tool in the fight against antimicrobial resistant super-bugs, a growing health crisis that threatens to kill more people than cancer by 2050.
This is the conclusion of an international team of researchers who analyzed lavatory wastewater from 44 international flights arriving in Australia from nine different countries.
The findings are both alarming and promising. Using advanced molecular techniques, the researchers detected nine high-priority pathogens and super-bugs, including some that are acquired in hospitals and resistant to multiple drugs.
Five of the nine super-bugs were found in all 44 flight samples, and a gene conferring resistance to last-resort antibiotics was detected on 17 flights. This gene was absent in Australia's urban wastewater during the same period, suggesting its was likely introduced via international travel.

Because it hosts so many pathogens, aircraft wastewater offers scientists a snapshot of emerging health risks before they reach local communities.
"Aircraft wastewater captures microbial signatures from passengers across different continents, offering a non-invasive, cost-effective way to monitor threats like AMR," said paper author Warish Ahmed, a principal research scientist from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), in a statement.
Significant Geographic Variations
The wastewater samples also revealed significant geographic variations, according to paper co-author and University of South Australia (UniSA) microbiologist professor Nicholas Ashbolt.
"Flights from Asia, particularly India, showed higher concentrations of antibiotic resistance genes, compared to flights from Europe and the UK," Ashbolt said in a statement.
Of the 44 international flights sampled, 18 originated from India, 14 from the United Kingdom, six from Germany and the rest from France, UAE, Türkiye, South Africa, Japan and Indonesia.
According to study author Yawen Liu, a visiting scientist from Xiamen University in China, these disparities could reflect differences in antibiotic use, water sanitation, population density and public health policies across regions.
Do disinfectants affect genetic material?
The team also tested whether disinfectants used in aircraft toilets degrade genetic material. They found that nucleic acids remained stable for up to 24 hours, even when exposed to strong disinfectants—confirming the reliability of aircraft wastewater for surveillance purposes.
"International travel is one of the major drivers of AMR spread," said Liu. "By monitoring aircraft wastewater, we can potentially detect and track antibiotic resistance genes before they become established in local environments."
This study builds on previous CSIRO research carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic, which successfully detected the virus in wastewater from long-haul flights of returning Australians.
With AMR projected to cause more than 39 million deaths globally by 2050, Ashbolt emphasizes the urgency of developing innovative surveillance tools to contrast it.
"Aircraft wastewater monitoring could complement existing public health systems, providing early warnings of emerging super-bug threats", he said.
Ahmed added: "This is a proof-of-concept with real-world potential. We now have the tools to turn aircraft toilets into an early-warning disease system to better manage public health."

Doctors Warn Against 'Unnecessary' Menopause Services

A group of doctors have warned against the risks or benefits of hormone therapy being exaggerated, the over-promotion of supplements and testing and marketing being disguised as advocacy. "We wrote this piece because although we are excited by increasing discussion around menopause care, we are seeing a surge of confusing and sometimes misleading information," Dr. Marie K Christakis of the University of Toronto told Newsweek. "This leaves many women unsure of what to believe and can result in either undertreatment or use of unproven approaches. "Testing can be expensive, misleading and may push women toward unnecessary treatments. Alternatively, it can be used as a justification to withhold treatment from women with debilitating perimenopausal symptoms before they experience a steep, steady drop in their hormone levels," Christakis explained. The menopause experts argue that the sharp rise in these commercial services for women seeking relief for menopausal symptoms raises concerns about the reliability and potential commercial bias of the information being provided. "Commercial bias arises when products or services are marketed under the guise of advocacy or education. This can mislead women into thinking something is evidence-based or endorsed by experts when it isn't backed by guiding medical organisations," Christakis added. The authors have instead urged that symptoms are best assessed by a thorough clinical history with treatment decisions guided by clinical response and patient preferences. "A societal transformation of attitudes and beliefs surrounding menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) has outpaced provider education, leaving primary care specialties unprepared to deliver this care," Christakis, Dr. Taylor Roebotham of Sinai Health, Dr. Stephanie Sterry, a UK NHS GP and Dr. Olexandra Koshkina of University of Toronto wrote. "Many women who access this type of testing are unaware of the limited supporting evidence and are influenced by trust in their healthcare provider. "In reality, these tests are of limited clinical use because there is no clearly defined therapeutic window for MHT, and some testing techniques do not offer accurate or precise assessment of hormone levels." For perimenopause and menopause, hormone testing offers no reliable way to determine who will benefit from treatment, when the final menstrual period will occur, or whether it is safe to discontinue contraception, the experts explained. Clinical guidelines from the British Menopause Society, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, The Menopause Society and Endocrine Society all agree: in women over age 45 presenting with validated symptoms of menopause, including menstrual irregularity, menopause is a clinical diagnosis and hormone testing is unnecessary. Despite this, the experts have warned, many women now purchase detailed hormone panels from wellness providers or online services that are often used to justify taking custom-made hormone preparations or supplements based on marginal deviations from hormone thresholds not grounded in evidence. "Most supplements marketed for menopause have little or no high-quality evidence to support their effectiveness. They are often costly and may delay women from seeking proven therapies that could help them," Christakis explained. The custom-made hormone preparations (known as compounded hormone regimens) are not regulated in the same way as standard menopausal hormone therapy. "There is concern that inconsistencies in the quantities of estrogen or progestogen in compounded bioidentical hormone therapy regimens can result in endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma, particularly in women with an intact uterus who are receiving inadequate progestogen," the authors warned. Until we can establish individualized target hormone levels, there is no role for commercial hormonal panel testing to guide therapy, they argued. In the meantime, testing in this way offers only a false sense of precision. The authors acknowledge that innovation is needed but suggest the normalization of hormone panel testing could be a symptom of a larger problem: the commercialisation of women's health and a movement away from evidence based practice. "For midlife women, effective treatment begins not with numbers, but with listening," they concluded. Christakis emphasized they do agree personalised care is essential. "This means taking time to listen to each woman's symptoms, medical history, and preferences, then tailoring care accordingly. We hope to encourage primary care providers to engage in shared decision-making with women and to integrate best available evidence," she explained. "Lab results don't capture the full experience of menopause. Listening allows clinicians to understand the impact symptoms are having on a woman's daily life and wellbeing. Effective treatment starts with that conversation, then uses evidence-based options to support her needs." Doing Your Hair May Expose You to as Much Pollution as Standing in Traffic

Blow-drying, straightening, or curling your hair in the morning might seem harmless—but it could be filling your lungs with as much pollution as standing on a busy highway, scientists warn. A research team led by professor Nusrat Jung and Ph.D. student Jianghui Liu of Purdue University, Indiana, found that a 10–20-minute heat-based hair routine can release more than 10 billion tiny particles into the air—which may then be inhaled into the lungs. These can cause health problems like breathing difficulties, lung inflammation and even cognitive decline. "This is really quite concerning," Jung said in a statement. "A typical 10-to-15-minute hair care routine, like the ones in our study, involved using one or more hair care products combined with heated styling tools such as flat irons, and curling wands," Jung told Newsweek. "In controlled experiments, volunteers performed realistic styling routines using five different hair products (hair cream, hair serum, hair lotion, and hair spray) and three types of appliances conditions that mirror what many people do in everyday life." During these hair-care routines, Jung explained, volatile and semi-volatile ingredients like so-called cyclic siloxanes are released into the air. When they encounter the hot surfaces of styling tools—which can exceed 300 degrees Fahrenheit—these compounds evaporate and form ultrafine nanoparticles. "We measured airborne concentrations reaching upward of 10 billion nanoparticles per cubic centimeter in the breathing zone, which is comparable to what one might encounter while standing in dense highway traffic," Jung continued. "It is important to note that the figure represents airborne concentration, not the total number inhaled. Inhalation depends on factors such as breathing rate, proximity, ventilation, styling temperature, type of product and routine duration. "However, because styling typically happens close to the face and in less ventilated spaces like bathrooms, the potential for meaningful inhalation exposure is substantial." Sergii Kolesnikov Hidden Chemicals In earlier research, Jung's team found that heat makes hair products release even more harmful chemicals. A notable example is D5 siloxane—a common ingredient in sprays, creams, and serums. "When we first studied the emissions from hair care products during heat surges, we focused on the volatile chemicals that were released, and what we found was already quite concerning," Jung said. "But when we took an even closer discovered that these chemicals were generating bursts of anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 nanoparticles per cubic centimeter." D5 siloxane is widely used because it makes products smooth and stable. But the European Chemicals Agency has called it "very persistent, very bio-accumulative." Europe has already restricted its use in some cosmetics. "D5 siloxane has been found to lead to adverse effects on the respiratory tract, liver and nervous system of laboratory animals," Jung said. When heated, these ingredients can form huge numbers of nanoparticles that travel deep into the lungs—posing health risks that are still poorly understood. "And now it appears that the airborne hazards of these products—particularly 'leave-on' formulations designed to be heat-resistant, such as hair sprays, creams and gels—are even greater than we expected," Liu said. According to them, the deepest parts of the lungs get the highest dose of these nanoparticles when inhaled. The team concluded that heat-based hair styling is a major indoor source of these particles, which have been underestimated until now. How to Reduce the Risk The best advice, according to Jung and Liu, is to avoid using hair products with heating tools altogether. If that's not realistic, make sure to improve ventilation. "If you must use hair care products, limit their use and ensure the space is well ventilated," Liu said. "Even without heating appliances, better ventilation can reduce exposure to volatile chemicals, such as D5 siloxane, in these products." Jung added that future studies should look even more closely at how these particles form and what they're made of. "By addressing these research gaps, future studies can provide a more holistic understanding of the emissions and exposures associated with heat-based hair styling, contributing to improved indoor air pollution assessments and mitigation strategies," she said.
