Mutual fund holding in NSE-listed firms surpasses direct retail for the first time

Mint26-05-2025
Domestic mutual funds' holding in NSE-listed companies has surpassed ownership of individual investors for the first time to an all-time high, as flows into systematic investment plans remain steady amid selling in mid- and small-caps by the direct retail category.
Mutual funds' share as a percentage of the total market capitalization of the companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) stood at a record high 10.4% in the quarter ended March 2025, surpassing the 9.5% share of individual investors who trade directly, according to NSE's India Ownership Tracker report.
Record inflows
These funds infused ₹1.9 trillion into equities in Q4 of FY25, taking total net inflows to ₹6.1 trillion for the year, the highest for any fiscal to date.

'In value terms, DMF (domestic mutual fund) holdings stood at ₹42.4 trillion, down just 2.4% QoQ, despite a larger drop in the overall market cap, reflecting sustained net equity purchases," the report said, adding that the strong momentum was 'driven in part" by continued retail participation through systematic investment plans (SIPs).
Individual holding in NSE-listed companies declined by 30 basis points sequentially to a seven-quarter low of 9.5% in January-March, led by reduced share in mid- and small-cap companies--a segment that saw aggressive buying by individuals over the past few years, according to the report.
'In value terms, individual holding in NSE-listed companies fell by 9.2% QoQ to ₹38.9 trillion—exceeding the overall drop in market cap—indicating subdued retail activity and elevated market volatility and uncertainty," the tracker showed.
Market veterans expect the trend to continue, given that individuals trading directly tend to use the mutual fund route after encountering losses in their investments.
'We have seen market volatility between October last year and 7 April, which has singed direct retail," said B Gopkumar, managing director and chief executive officer at Axis Mutual Fund. 'This trend in holding will weigh in favour of mutual funds as some individual investors who have been hit by losses in any cycle tend to return through the MF route."
Mutual fund inflows are expected to remain buoyant, said analysts.

"With the investment environment turning more favourable, mutual fund flows are likely to gain further strength," said Nirav Karkera, head of research at wealth-tech platform Fisdom. 'Positive equity outlook and a gradually emerging risk-on sentiment are expected to drive continued interest from retail investors."
The total market cap of the listed universe fell to ₹408.9 trillion as of March from ₹436.6 trillion as of December.

Cryptocurrency Live News & Updates : BNB Price Reaches New High of $880

21 Aug 2025 | 03:10:15 AM IST BNB (Binance Coin) has surged 4.48% to $873.31, achieving a new all-time high, driven by institutional buying and ecosystem growth. BNB has made headlines recently, hitting an all-time high of $880, buoyed by a 4.48% increase in the last 24 hours. This surge is attributed to significant institutional investments, including a $160 million purchase by Nasdaq-listed BNB Network Company, which now holds 325,000 tokens. The growing institutional confidence is further highlighted by Windtree Therapeutics' $60 million allocation in July. Meanwhile, the memecoin Pepeto is gaining traction, aiming to transform $20,000 into $1 million through its zero-fee trading platform and cross-chain bridge, appealing to traders seeking efficiency. Additionally, xStocks, a tokenized equity platform on Solana, has surpassed $2 billion in trading volume within six weeks, showcasing the rapid adoption of tokenized assets. As BNB continues to break resistance levels, market participants are closely monitoring its potential to maintain momentum above $900, while Pepeto and xStocks illustrate the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency and decentralized finance. India Inc post-pandemic: Record profits, cash surge, but private investment lags

India Inc's post-pandemic trends are puzzling on many counts. Outbreak of Covid and realisation of supply chain concentrations resulted in corporate tax competition across many sovereign jurisdictions. The case for India was no different, and corporate tax rate was cut sharply to accommodate supply shock from the pandemic. But subsequent turn of events shows a picture that's difficult to reconcile with post-pandemic broader recovery. Financial With post-pandemic tax cut and lower interest rates, listed entities, barring BFSI, achieved substantial deleveraging. Loan fund to capital ratios has declined to a 15-yr low of 0.9% as of March 2025 from 1.3% in March 2019. Profit after tax increased to more than ₹11 lakh cr in FY25 from less than ₹4 lakh cr in FY19. Interest coverage ratio (Ebitda/interest) improved to 5% in FY25 from 3.5% in FY16. Operating income also improved by 300 bps, with 15% Ebitda margin in FY25 from around 12% a decade ago. Cash Current aggregate financials of listed entities show India Inc cash holding has tripled to more than ₹13 lakh cr as of March 2025 from around ₹4.5 lakh cr in March 2018. Pvt investment Investment announcements by private sector have significantly increased. Private sector participation, which was around 40% in FY19, has increased to 74% in Q1 FY26. Investment announcements have reached an all-time high of ₹51 lakh cr in FY25, compared to ₹10 lakh cr in FY20. In Q1 FY26, total announcements of ₹19.1 lakh cr have been made vis-a-vis ₹8.6 lakh cr in Q1 FY25, registering a growth of 123%, a quarter of which came from private sector. Lending rate Weighted average lending rate (WALR) on fresh rupee loan has declined to 7.82% in June 2025 from 8.72% two years what does all this translate to in terms of impact on capital formation? Although capacity utilisation has improved - now at a 48-quarter high at 77.7% in March 2025 - the impact on capital formation is muted. With higher ploughing back of profit, capital funds increased 4.3x from March 2011 to March 2025. But fixed asset creation increased by 3.6x during the same period. This indicates a slowdown in pace of asset announcement to actual conversion has been slow, despite a favourable policy environment consisting of capex thrust in the budget, low interest rates and relatively robust demand. More importantly, stock exchange data shows that during the pandemic in FY21, valuations of Indian corporates were very attractive. Seizing opportunities, India Inc increased promoter holding from around 42% in September 2019 to more than 45%, which has now reduced to around 40%.Share of private promoters in India's capital market, consolidated across all NSE-listed companies, declined to an 8-yr low of 40.6% as on June 30, 2025, from more than 45% in December 2021. Thus, part of the loss in promoter control due to deleveraging was regained though windfalls from tax cuts, and again liquidated through stake sale. This indicates that, with the benefit of hindsight, a policy of ease of doing business and a low tax regime has an unintended consequence. There is limited crowding-in of private investment demand after years of public sector-led capex. GoI has done most of the heavy Inc, sitting on a huge cash pile, should now display the proverbial 'animal spirits' and participate in the India growth story more vigorously. Uncertainties can't be used as an alibi for private investments not coming forward. As indicators like S&P's latest rating upgrade demonstrate, India's large domestic economy could cushion any adverse shock. As the S&P report reveals, exposure of Indian exports subjected to tariffs is only at 1.2% of GDP. Additionally, decision to reform and rationalise GST will further aid consumption. Private investors shouldn't wait till GST cuts are effective. They should open the chest now, and use the dry powder. After all, ships are safe in harbour. But that's not what ships are built for. Indian indices open flat as FPI outflows weigh on sentiment despite govt boosters

Market experts noted that factors such as monetary and fiscal stimulus, good monsoons, benign inflation, and targeted consumption boosters should ideally have pushed Indian markets higher. The Nifty 50 index opened at 24,965.80, slipping by 14.85 points or 0.06 per cent. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex started the day at 81,669.09, registering a modest gain of 24.70 points or 0.03 per cent. New Delhi: Indian stock markets opened flat on Tuesday as continuous foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows kept indices in check, even as the government recently announced several consumption-boosting measures. Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, told ANI 'What has held back the markets has been a relatively higher valuation in an underwhelming earnings recovery scenario. As earnings rise, Indian markets will rise ahead of these. That could happen by the next quarter as the festive season boost meets the government boosters. At some point, Indian markets will take off in anticipation.' On the global front, Bagga said that the easing of tensions between India and China, along with Chinese assurances on supply of rare earths, fertilisers, and tunnel boring machines, as well as expectations of large FDI inflows, should have improved investor sentiment. India is also making efforts to address the impact of punitive tariffs imposed by the US on key labour-intensive export sectors. In addition, the country is working to forge stronger economic partnerships at the geostrategic level. These measures will safeguard jobs and benefit India's trade outlook in the coming months. Another factor that markets are closely watching is the movement of FPIs. Large short positions taken by FPIs have added pressure on the indices. Once these reverse, Indian markets could see sharp short covering, potentially helping indices climb to all-time highs by the end of the year. In the broader market, the Nifty 100 was down by 0.08 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.05 per cent. The Nifty Small Cap 100, however, gained 0.11 per cent in the opening session. Among sectoral indices on NSE, mixed trends were seen. Nifty Auto rose 0.17 per cent, while Nifty FMCG declined by 0.17 per cent. Nifty Pharma was down 0.20 per cent, Nifty Realty slipped 0.14 per cent, and Nifty Oil & Gas fell 0.15 per cent. Vikram Kasat, Head – Advisory at PL Capital, said, 'Nifty continued its bullish momentum. On the hourly chart, there was a gap zone between 24,993-25,046 levels which will be the immediate resistance. Clearing this can push the Nifty higher towards 25,250, which is a make-or-break zone from a medium-term perspective. The 24,852-24,673 range will be the support zone.' In the Asian markets, trading sentiment was largely weak on Tuesday morning. Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined by 1.87 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.77 per cent, Taiwan's weighted index slipped by more than 2 per cent, while South Korea's KOSPI fell by 1.98 per cent at the time of filing this report.
