SANDAKAN: Ten years ago on 16 May, Natalie, a female sun bear and the first under the care of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) was released back into the wild, thus taking her first steps into freedom. In her honour, this date has been dedicated as International Sun Bear Day, celebrating both her journey and the ongoing efforts to protect this endangered species.
Advertisement The founder of BSBCC, Dr Wong Siew Te, said Natalie's release after spending five years at the centre into the Tabin Wildlife Reserve symbolised both success and hope in efforts to save sun bears in our forests. TAED plans Nomad replica to honour Double Six victims

KOTA KINABALU: A replica of the Nomad aircraft from the 1976 Double Six tragedy may be installed at Prince Philip Park, Tanjung Aru, as part of its redevelopment, said Tanjung Aru Eco-Development (TAED) chairman Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia. He said the existing memorial in Sembulan would remain, with the replica serving as an additional tribute to educate the public, especially youth, about the crash that claimed several state Cabinet members, including then Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens. Advertisement Pandikar assured the replica would honour the victims without sensationalising the tragedy, and said plans could be revised if concerns are raised by the victims' families. Runaway cow recaptured after six-hour operation in KK

The cow, which broke loose at around 8pm, could not be subdued by its owner and residents due to its aggressive behaviour. Advertisement Kota Kinabalu Civil Defence Force (APM) officers were called in and arrived at midnight to assist in the capture. Six officers, equipped with PPE and rope tools, managed to restrain the 300kg bull with help from the community at 2.16am. Clean water for over 200 Kota Belud villagers

Kota Kinabalu: More than 200 residents of Kampung Tinata Ulu in Kota Belud can now enjoy access to clean water following the completion of a gravity-fed water supply and rainwater harvesting system supported by Yayasan Petronas and implemented by Taylor's University. The village, located about 80km from here, had been dependent on an outdated water system since 2010, which struggled to meet both domestic and agricultural needs. Advertisement The new system, featuring a 4km pipeline and central storage tanks with a 3,600 gallon capacity, is expected to significantly improve the villager's quality of life. Yayasan Petronas Chief Executive Officer Shariah Nelly Francis said the access to clean water has long been a critical need for the community and hopes the project will makes a lasting impact. Kampung Tinata's Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairperson Hadlee Panchai said the improved system has eased their burden. 'We used to do gotong-royong every week just to repair the old pipes. Now we can focus on our livelihoods,' he said. The 18-month initiative also introduced sustainable farming and maintenance skills through a partnership with local NGO Hopes Malaysia, enabling residents to independently manage the system. The project falls under Yayasan Petronas' 'Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat' (Mekar) programme, which focuses on empowering rural communities by meeting basic needs and promoting self-reliance.
