NATO leaders pledge major defense spending increase

NATO member states agreed on Wednesday to raise their defense spending to 5% of national GDP by 2035, responding to sustained pressure from US President Donald Trump and marking the alliance's most significant funding commitment in decades.
The decision, made during a summit in The Hague, includes a core commitment of at least 3.5% for direct defence expenditures, with up to an additional 1.5% allocated to broader investments related to security infrastructure.
In a joint statement, leaders said they remained united in the face of "profound security threats," citing Russia as a long-term danger to Euro-Atlantic stability and reaffirming their 'ironclad' commitment to NATO's collective defence clause, Article Five. However, unlike past communiqués, there was no direct mention of Russian aggression in Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance is becoming 'stronger, fairer and more lethal,' emphasizing unity and deterrence in the face of growing geopolitical challenges. 'No one should doubt our capacity or determination should our security be challenged,' he added.
President Trump, attending his first NATO summit since 2019, described the outcome as a 'big success' and said the new funding framework would ensure greater equality among member states.
Not all members embraced the 5% target equally. Spain had voiced objections before the summit, with Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo calling the figure "misguided," but Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez ultimately signed the agreement, stating it was compatible with Spain's existing commitments. Belgium and Slovakia also raised concerns, though both signaled they would work toward the revised target.
As of last year, 22 of NATO's 32 members met or exceeded the previously agreed 2% GDP target, but the new benchmark will significantly raise expectations across the alliance.

SDF denies claims linking al-Hol camp to Damascus church attack
Shafaq News – Al-Hasakah / Qamishli On Wednesday, the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) denied accusations by Damascus authorities that individuals who carried out a recent suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church in the al-Duwaila'a district of Damascus came from the al-Hol camp in northeast Syria. In a statement, the SDF described the remarks by the Syrian Interior as 'unfounded and not based on factual evidence,' calling Syrian government to conduct 'transparent investigations and publicly share their findings to prevent further terrorist attacks.' The attack caused civilian casualties and was followed by the reported foiling of another bombing attempt targeting the Sayyida Zainab shrine south of the capital. The SDF stated that internal investigations showed no record of anyone leaving the al-Hol camp during the period in question, apart from Syrians transferred at the request of the Damascus government and Iraqi nationals repatriated through official arrangements with Baghdad. The statement also emphasized that al-Hol primarily houses women and children from ISIS-affiliated families and does not contain foreign combatants, 'making it unlikely that non-Syrian suicide bombers could have emerged from the camp.' Meanwhile, dozens of Christians and residents of Qamishli took to the streets to protest the deadly bombing that targeted Mar Elias Church, denouncing 'a terrorist attack on places of worship and the Christian community in Syria.' Carrying photos of the victims, demonstrators chanted slogans celebrating the Christian faith and the cross, while condemning violence against religious minorities. One of the protesters, George Younan, told Shafaq News that 'the continuing security lapses are allowing such crimes and violations against Christians and other minorities to occur repeatedly,' and called for an end to what he described as government negligence. Another protester, Issa Issa, said the bombing was not an isolated incident, but a direct consequence of 'security chaos and the power vacuum, worsened by the government's policy of arming unlawful groups under various pretexts.' He pointed to similar attacks in the countryside of Latakia, Suwayda, and Jaramana in recent years.

Despite President Donald Trump's most daring and historically unique military operation against Iran's military nuclear facilities – a move for which Western civilization is morally indebted to him for preventing the destruction of an entire country, Israel – the Iranian regime is still not defeated. Furthermore, in their reactions to the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, Iranian regime officials are emphasizing that the regime will continue with its uranium enrichment project, and will even from now on adopt a policy of nuclear ambiguity. The following are statements by Iranian regime spokesmen on this topic, both before and after the U.S. strike: Iranian Regime Spokesmen: We Will Continue To Enrich Uranium; 'The Game Is Not Over' Iranian Majlis speaker Mohammad Qalibaf and Majlis members announced, amid cheers of "Death to America," that today, June 25, they had approved a bill suspending Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).[1] Qalibaf even promised that "Iran's nuclear program for peaceful purposes will proceed from now on more rapidly... Agency [IAEA] officials will be prohibited from entering until the security of the nuclear facilities and scientists is assured."[2] The previous day, June 24, Behrouz Kamalvandi, deputy director and spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) stressed in his response to the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities: "They must know that this industry is deeply rooted in our country and they will not be able to uproot it. Considering our capability, the growth of this industry must continue, and it will not be stopped."[3] In a June 23 interview on a German TV show, Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi was asked, "After the American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, will Iran stop its uranium enrichment?" He replied: "We are members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty [NPT] and in this framework we will continue to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and our country's needs. No one can tell us what to do or not do as long as we operate within the framework of our obligations under this treaty."[4] Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC in a June 21 interview, before the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, that "zero enrichment is impossible" for Iran, adding: "We don't know how we can trust them [the Americans] any more" after Israel's attacks.[5] Ali Shamkhani, top advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, wrote on X in Hebrew on June 23: "Even assuming that the facilities were completely destroyed, the game is not over; the enriched material, the local experts, and the politics will remain. Now, the political and operational initiative, together with the legitimate right of self defense, are in the hands of the side that plays wisely and refrains from indiscriminate fire. The surprises will continue!"[6] Shamkhani's post on X, June 23, 2025. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced to French President Emmanuel Macron on June 21, before the U.S. strike on Iran's nuclear facilities: "We are ready to negotiate and cooperate in order to build trust in the area of our nuclear activity for peaceful purposes – but we will in no way accept reducing our nuclear activity to zero."[7] On June 24, Majlis member Amir Hossein Thabeti said: "The West must get accustomed to complete ambiguity regarding the Iranian nuclear program."[8] On June 23, Iranian television presenter Amir-Hossein Tahmasebi announced, addressing President Trump, that Iran was now adopting a policy of nuclear ambiguity. He said: "We will enrich uranium to whatever level we choose. We will retain as much [enriched] material as we see fit. We will import to and export from any country we wish.
