Police seek ‘answers' on criminal John Palmer's killer 10 years on

Yahoo8 hours ago

Police have launched a fresh appeal for information about the murder of notorious criminal John 'Goldfinger' Palmer on the tenth anniversary of his death.
The 65-year-old, once described as Britain's richest criminal, was found dead in the garden of his remote woodland home in South Weald, Essex, on June 24 2015.
It is thought his killer entered the garden over the fence and shot Mr Palmer six times with a pistol as he was outside burning rubbish on a bonfire.
Essex Police originally thought he had died of natural causes because of recent keyhole surgery to his chest, but it later emerged that officers had not properly inspected his body and he had been murdered in a suspected contract killing.
A hole found in the fence suggested the killer may have been watching him in the days prior to the murder, the force said.
Mr Palmer's killer remains at large despite detectives exploring hundreds of lines of inquiry and examining thousands of pieces of evidence over the last decade.
The appeal comes amid a renewed focus on Mr Palmer's life because of the BBC drama series The Gold.
Mr Palmer gained his 'Goldfinger' nickname after being acquitted of handling gold bullion in the £26 million Brink's-Mat raid in 1983, with the show's first season telling the story of the raid.
Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings said: 'Ten years on from John's death and the pain has not gone away for his family. They still rightly want answers as to who murdered him and why.
'His killing was a brutal, planned execution – he was shot multiple times in the grounds of his own home.
'Over the years there has been much commentary, media coverage and even television programmes speculating about his connections to the underworld, high-profile crimes and his past – but whatever someone's past, John was a father, partner and much loved by his family.
'His murder was callous and calculated.'
Mr Palmer was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2001 for a £33 million timeshare fraud which had 16,000 potential victims.
He was also being investigated by the Spanish authorities and was due to stand trial over alleged property fraud involving properties in Tenerife and Spain in 2017, with several other individuals involved in the scheme subsequently found guilty and sentenced.
Mr Jennings said the the key to solving Mr Palmer's murder 'lies within the underworld' and the force suspected it was linked to the fraud trial.
He added: 'In the years since his death a lot has changed within the criminal fraternity, including loyalties, and people may now feel able to come forward.
'If you do have information please, now, do the right thing, 10 years on John's family must have justice and answers.'
Anyone with information on Mr Palmer's murder should call Essex Police, or contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Jury selected for trial of Pa. man accused of murdering Temple University police Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald

A jury was selected Monday in the trial of the Bucks County man accused of murdering Temple University police Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald in North Philadelphia. The two sides also delivered opening statements, and testimony began in the case on Monday. Miles Pfeffer, who was 18 at the time of his arrest, was charged with murder for allegedly fatally shooting Fitzgerald near Temple's campus on Feb. 18, 2023. Pfeffer allegedly committed a carjacking after the shooting and then fled to Buckingham Township in Bucks County, where he was arrested the next day. He was also charged with murder of a law enforcement officer, robbery, carjacking, weapons charges and other offenses. Pfeffer has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Pfeffer faces life in prison. Officials said that Fitzgerald tried to stop three people in a robbery just off Temple's campus when Pfeffer ignored the police officer's commands to stop. According to police, Fitzgerald caught up to Pfeffer, and a fight broke out. Pfeffer allegedly then took out a gun and shot Fitzgerald in the head. An affidavit claimed Pfeffer then stood over Fitzgerald and fired several more shots into his face and head area. Fitzgerald was later pronounced dead at Temple Hospital. The 1700 block of Montgomery Avenue where Fitzgerald was killed is now named Christopher Fitzgerald Way. The Fitzgerald family has previously expressed outrage over Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's decision to not seek the death penalty in the case.

Wife in deadly love triangle with racquetball coach and her hair mogul husband gets life sentence

The wife of a celebrity hairstylist will spend the rest of her life in prison for having her lover kill her husband in what was supposed to appear as a home invasion robbery gone wrong. Monica Sementelli, 53, was sentenced to life without parole Monday for the brutal stabbing of her husband, Fabio Sementelli, 49, in their Woodland Hills home eight years ago. A jury in April convicted her of murder and conspiracy to commit murder for masterminding the slaying on their Woodland Hills deck, where one of their daughters would later find him wounded in a pool of blood. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Ronald Coen, before pronouncing sentence, rejected a bid by Sementelli's legal team to get her sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Fabio Sementelli suffered multiple wounds to his face, jawline, neck, chest and thigh and the fact that his $8,000 Rolex watch was left on his wrist when he was killed left detectives puzzled. Read more: 'Betrayal, greed and lust': Did a hair mogul's wife mastermind his killing? A jury now decides Blood from the crime scene was soon linked to Robert Baker, a convicted sex offender and former porn star who began an affair with Monica Sementilli after serving as her racquetball coach at a West Hills fitness club. While prosecutors have painted Sementilli as the "mastermind" behind the slaying, as she stood to gain $1.6 million in life insurance payouts, Baker took the stand during the 2 1/2-month trial and insisted he killed the hair mogul for love. 'I murdered him because I wanted her,' Baker testified during her trial. 'She had nothing to do with it." Baker was previously convicted of Fabio Sementilli's murder and also sentenced to life without parole. During Sementilli's trial, L.A. County Deputy Dist. Atty. Beth Silverman presented video evidence that showed Monica Sementilli watching a live feed of the area shortly before the attack to ensure Baker had a clear path to her husband. Mitzi Roberts, a veteran homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, also testified that Sementilli and Baker exchanged 95 messages through an encrypted messaging app called Viber on the day of the killing and 180 messages the day before. While Sementilli denied all wrongdoing and publicly grieved her husband — an executive at the hair care company Wella — she was involved in a torrid affair with Baker. The pair sexted during her husband's funeral, according to Silverman, who said the the new widow even sent nudes to Baker during the service in Toronto. Austin, a former Oregon probation officer, said he never spoke to Monica directly, but Baker made clear his lover wanted her husband "gone." 'Everything he did, he did after he got a text message, which told me he was talking to her via text message.' Austin testified. 'I did not hear him talk to her on the phone ... but everything happened in sequence.' Defense attorney Leonard Levine insisted, "Adultery is not murder. ... Everything she did was to protect the affair, not to cover up the murder." He called Baker a ``Svengali,'' saying that Sementilli made the ``biggest mistake of her life'' in becoming involved in an extramarital affair with him.
