ITO Skywalk: From Dazzling To Dismal

ITO Skywalk: From Dazzling To Dismal

Time of India2 days ago
New Delhi: When it first came up, the ITO skywalk dazzled people. With its smooth curves, shimmering glass panels and landscaped patches weaving through steel and stone, the structure felt like a bold urban statement—an elevated stretch of design that merged mobility with style.
Even from a distance, its sweeping shape captured attention. But today, that shine has dulled. Quite literally, the lights are going out.
To facilitate safe and seamless pedestrian movement across Tilak Marg, Sikandra Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Mathura Road—towards Pragati Maidan Metro Station—a large network of public walkways was developed. This included a 400-metre-long skywalk, which features a loop and ramp.
Additionally, a 54-metre-long foot overbridge (FOB) near Hans Bhawan connects crucial points in the area.
Completed in 2018 at a cost of nearly Rs 54 crore, the project was hailed as one of Delhi's most ambitious pedestrian projects. Equipped with elevators, escalators, smart LED lighting, CCTV cameras, and a design meant to offer both convenience and a visual break from the city's clutter, it was positioned as a futuristic landmark.

But six years later, some of the promises lie flickering—between ambition and apathy, with non-uniformity in aesthetics and lighting of the FOB and the skywalk.

At the Hans Bhawan FOB, one lift is non-functional and the lighting frequently flickers. Much of the LED lighting at the architecture that once gave the bridge its after-hours glow now lies in disrepair. Some stretches shine brightly, while others remain completely dark.
Decorative facade lights have stopped working in several places, and in patches, the walkway plunges into an uneasy shadow. The contrast is stark and jarring.
What once sparkled now flickers like a forgotten festival light.
Meanwhile, the skywalk, though visibly cleaner, has several maintenance issues: hanging tubelights, a leaking ceiling as at one point, missing outer LED lights similar to the FOB, and exposed electrical equipment.
One section of the skywalk wall also has tobacco stains.
The project was envisioned to link high-traffic nodes, including the ITO junction. With over 25 major offices and institutions in the vicinity, including the police headquarters, PWD Bhawan, GST office, Supreme Court, Lady Irwin College and Vikas Minar, nearly 30,000 pedestrians navigate the nearby roads daily. The ITO skywalk can still be the iconic connector in the heart of the capital. But unless upkeep returns to the blueprint, it risks becoming what many public projects in the city quietly turn into—a brilliant idea left dimmed by disinterest.
PWD officials stated that the maintenance was their responsibility and that they would look into it.

DC flags numerous civic lapses during inspection in Mohali

1 2 Mohali: Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal on Friday conducted a comprehensive inspection of key road stretches in Mohali as part of the ongoing Punjab Road Cleanliness Mission and flagged several civic lapses issuing strict directions for immediate action on sanitation, streetlights, sewerage, grills, and side berm maintenance. The inspection, which spanned from the Bus Stand lights to Phase 11, focused on the stretch covering light points between Phases 6 and 11. Highlighting the urgency of the mission, Mittal instructed officials to resolve all identified issues in a time-bound manner. At Phase 6 light point, she observed unregulated gatherings of labourers stopping vehicles to seek work, leading to traffic disruptions. She directed that they be relocated to a designated spot to maintain smooth vehicular movement. Passing by the Phase 1 police station, the deputy commissioner expressed concern over side berms cluttered with impounded vehicles and ordered their immediate removal. She also took serious note of loose, hanging electric cables along the road and asked the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to secure them without delay. The Swaraj light point was found littered with garbage, prompting the DC to order a prompt cleanup. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nvidia's AI Strategy Is Clear - But Is Wall Street Paying Attention? She took serious note of the persistent waterlogging on the road stretch from Gurdwara Saacha Dhan Sahib (Phase 3B1) to Chawla Lights and instructed officials to expedite the laying of a storm sewer line to resolve the issue. In Phases 8 to 11, she emphasized the need for clearly visible road signage and fully functional streetlights, particularly between Gurdwara Amb Sahib and the PSEB office. She was also apprised of ongoing sewer line work in Phase 9. DC Mittal said the ongoing field inspections are aimed at ensuring pothole repairs, improved road markings, safe and clean footpaths, effective waste disposal, and overall civic upkeep under the Punjab Road Cleanliness Mission. She added that Thursday's inspection was carried out with engineering and sanitation teams of MC Mohali and GMADA, and that all departments have been directed to complete remedial works before the next review.

Highrise buildings to undergo mandatory structural safety audits

1 2 Prayagraj: The high-rise buildings of city are set to become safer under a new directive that makes structural safety audits mandatory. According to the new guidelines, all high-rise buildings (those taller than 15 metres) will now require a safety audit 10 years after construction, and then once every five years thereafter. This comes after concerns about safety lapses and past fire incidents in several multi-storeyed buildings across the city. Over the last two decades, many tall buildings have come up in Prayagraj. However, most of these never underwent any formal safety checks after completion. Earlier, buildings only required a one-time No Objection Certificate (NOC) from a structural engineer at the time of construction. After that, the safety of many buildings was left unchecked, putting residents at risk. Several buildings in the city, despite having structural flaws, still received clearance. Fire safety measures in many of these buildings became non-functional, mere showpieces. Even govt buildings like the Advocate General's Office near the High Court and the Indira Bhawan (housing the development authority itself) witnessed major fire outbreaks leading to investigations in each incident. Now, under the new safety rules, any building found with structural cracks or safety risks must be immediately audited by the owner, builder, or Residents Welfare Association (RWA). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Techno Mag Learn More Undo For buildings above 50 metres, only expert structural engineers registered with the authority can conduct these audits. The audit reports will have to be submitted to the local development authority. If any risks are found during the audit, the concerned parties—owners, builders, or RWAs—will be required to fix them within a set timeframe. Failure to do so will allow the authorities to carry out the repairs or reconstruction themselves, and the cost will be recovered from the building owners or their associations. Senior officials of the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) said that strict action will continue against illegal and unsafe constructions. The new guidelines will be strictly enforced, ensuring better safety standards in the city's growth.
