Uptown Girl: Christie Brinkley's memoir opens up about marriage to Billy Joel and personal struggles

Express Tribune26-04-2025

Christie Brinkley is reflecting on her life's triumphs and heartbreaks in her new memoir Uptown Girl, named after the hit song Billy Joel famously wrote about her.
In an interview with Page Six, the 71-year-old model shared emotional details about her marriage to Joel, revealing that his struggles with alcohol ultimately ended their relationship. Brinkley, who was married to Joel from 1985 to 1994, described their time together as filled with love and adventure, calling him a soulmate. However, she detailed in her book that Joel's drinking led to troubling incidents, including him disappearing for days and acting erratically. She recalled instances like Joel missing their daughter Alexa Ray's fifth birthday and a Thanksgiving meal, and once becoming destructive during a drunken outburst in Hawaii. Brinkley ultimately asked for a divorce after a particularly alarming episode at their East Hamptons home.
Despite the pain, Brinkley said she still holds Joel in high regard. She noted that he encouraged her to share her story openly. 'Leaving Billy wasn't easy for me,' she said, adding that their separation was necessary for her well-being. Joel, now 75, has since addressed his struggles publicly and is currently married to Alexis Roderick.
Brinkley's memoir also recounts her near-fatal helicopter crash in 1994 and her challenging romantic history. Before Joel, she married artist Jean François Allaux and endured the tragic loss of boyfriend Olivier Chandon de Brailles. Following her divorce from Joel, Brinkley married Rick Taubman, a relationship she now describes as emotionally and financially exploitative. Her fourth marriage, to architect Peter Cook, ended publicly amid allegations of infidelity.
Beyond her personal relationships, Brinkley spoke about her children, expressing pride in their resilience and encouraging them to forge their own paths without relying on their family name. She also discussed a past scare involving her eldest daughter Alexa Ray, who suffered a health crisis after a breakup, an experience Brinkley said brought her and Joel together momentarily during a difficult time.
Today, Brinkley continues modeling, runs her fashion brand TWRHLL, and owns her wine label Bellissima. Reflecting on her journey, she said, "Life's adventures come with mistakes and heartbreak, but they ultimately shape who we are."
Brinkley, now living in the Hamptons, remains open to future possibilities, saying, 'Never say never' when asked about marriage again.

Elizabeth Weber reemerges after decades for Billy Joel's HBO documentary

Elizabeth Weber, Billy Joel's first wife and longtime former manager, made headlines this week by publicly speaking for the first time in 43 years. The 82-year-old appeared at the premiere of And So It Goes, HBO's new two-part documentary on the music icon, during the 2025 Tribeca Festival in New York. Weber, often referred to as Joel's muse and the inspiration behind several of his classic songs, attended the event with her son Sean Small. Reflecting on her eight-year marriage to Joel, she told People, 'It was great then, it's great whenever I think about it, and it's great now.' The documentary dives deep into Billy Joel's early struggles, creative rise, and personal pain — much of which centered around Elizabeth. The two had a controversial beginning, with Elizabeth initially married to Joel's bandmate Jon Small. Despite the rocky start, she and Joel married in 1973, with Weber becoming a strategic force behind his success. She reportedly pushed him to release 'Just the Way You Are' — a decision that won him two Grammys. Weber also inspired iconic songs such as 'She's Always a Woman' and 'The Stranger.' However, their marriage ended in the early 1980s amid Joel's growing substance issues and a near-fatal motorcycle accident. Now, re-entering public life, Weber says she joined the project after encouragement from her granddaughters and co-director Susan Lacy. Notably absent was Joel, 75, who is recovering from normal pressure hydrocephalus. According to Lacy, he is undergoing physical therapy and is expected to recover fully. Weber's return offers rare insight into a pivotal yet misunderstood chapter of Billy Joel's career and personal life.

Nicki Minaj features on Vogue Italia cover, opens up about balancing motherhood with music career

Nicki Minaj, 42, graces the cover of Vogue Italia this month, where she opens up in a candid interview about the pressures of fame and her decision to delay motherhood. Despite being one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 100 million records sold, the rapper revealed that the relentless criticism she has faced over the years has often made her question her place in the industry. "I've heard every possible criticism about me," Minaj confessed. "I've thought about quitting so many times. I'm glad I didn't. I hope my story can be an inspiration to others and encourage them not to give up," she continued. The Super Bass hitmaker, who is a mother to a four-year-old boy with her husband Kenneth "Zoo" Petty, also shared her personal reasons for delaying motherhood. She explained that the pressures of her career, particularly the need to support her family, meant that she postponed having children. "I didn't go to every Thanksgiving, every Christmas, or birthday party because I had to work," Minaj noted. "The price I paid was not having a 'normal' life." Nicki emphasized that while her career has allowed her to provide her son with opportunities she never had, there are still challenges, particularly around maintaining his privacy. "When we go out, I have to worry that someone will take his picture," she said. Reflecting on her upbringing, Minaj spoke about the discipline she received as a child. "I was one of those kids who could tell when an adult was stupid. I had nothing, and I wanted it more than anyone else," she added. Minaj's determination and ambition from a young age have been integral to her success, as she often told others she would one day become a star. The full interview, along with her cover feature, will be available in the May 28 issue of Vogue Italia and online at

Billy Joel cancels concerts after brain disorder

US singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel took to Instagram on Friday to announce that he is cancelling all his scheduled concerts after he was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder. In line with his diagnosis, the 76-year-old singer added in his statement that he is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing while he recovers, according to a statement on social media. "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding," Joel said. The artist's condition was exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance, added the statement. Citing the Cleveland Clinic, Reuters reported that the condition, which is more likely in people over the age of 65, occurs when fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. Its symptoms resemble those of dementia and can sometimes be reversible. Joel, known for hits like Piano Man and Uptown Girl, ended his record-breaking monthly Madison Square Garden residency – which had begun in 2014 – last year. During his nine-year residency, the singer performed a total of 150 sold-out shows. According to The Guardian, Joel's team stated that the 23-time Grammy winner was "thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage." The publication noted that Joel's cancelled dates include 17 stops in North America and the UK. However, whilst the artist may no longer be fit to perform, two-part documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes will premiere at the Tribeca film festival next in New York next month.
