Christie Brinkley Breaks Silence on Billy Joel's Health Diagnosis
Earlier this year iconic model Christie Brinkley debuted her new memoir, Uptown Girl, where she discussed her own life while detailing failed marriages with Peter Cook and musician Billy Joel - among other things. During her promotional book tour, Brinkley told The New York Times that she nearly didn't include a troubling anecdote about Joel during his troubles with alcohol in the early 1990's. She described the scene where Joel drunkenly ate a full plate of pasta before blaming his bandmates for eating it when he couldn't remember before eventually kicking everyone out of his house. 'Suddenly, he was acting delusional in a way I'd never seen before. I was so scared that I couldn't think, and when one of the guys in the band grabbed my arm, pulling me out of the house with the rest of them, I went along,' Brinkley wrote in Uptown Girl. The couple would divorce the following year, but have remained close as evidenced by Brinkley's post for Joel after his troubling health diagnosis. I was looking for some cute photos of you and Alexa to send you, when I came across this clip from a recent concert," she said in a post on Instagram. Joel was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain's ventricles. '[It] can affect several brain-related abilities, including thinking and concentrating, memory, movement and more,' according to the Cleveland Clinic's website. 'The symptoms of NPH look very much like those of dementia, but NPH is sometimes reversible.' Christie Brinkley shares support for ex-husband Billy Joel as he is treated for neurological issue
Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel have been the friendly exes and that is on display after his recently shared medical diagnosis. The 'Piano Man' star has normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that causes pressure on the brain. Joel has canceled upcoming tour dates as a result. Over the weekend, Brinkley, who was married to Joel from 1985 to 1994, posted a video of one of the legendary singer's performances, writing, 'The whole Brinkley gang is sending you lots of love and good wishes for a full and speedy recovery.' The two are parents of daughter Alexa Ray Joel, 39. 'I was looking for some cute photos of you and Alexa to send you, when I came across this clip from a recent concert,' she wrote in the caption. 'Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.' According to Yale Medicine, what NPH is 'very rare condition' that 'occurs when a person has too much fluid in the brain.' Normal pressure hydrocephalus is one of two types of hydrocephalus, an "abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid deep within the brain," according to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. CSF is the fluid that fills the brain's ventricles, or cavities, helping to cushion both the brain and spinal cord. When the flow of this fluid is disrupted and begins to accumulate in the ventricles, it can lead to normal pressure hydrocephalus. This condition can happen at any age but is more common among older adults and can lead to problems with walking, bladder control, and cognitive functions like thinking and reasoning, according to the NINDS.
