Magadh University VC presents research paper at South Korea conference
PATNA: Magadh University vice-chancellor (VC) S P Shahi presented his research paper at the 28th world conference of the International Political Science Association held at Seoul in South Korea on Monday.
In his paper entitled "Political empowerment of scheduled castes in Bihar", Shahi made an attempt to showcase the empowerment of the marginalized sections of the society in Bihar by ensuring their social awakening and effective participation in democratic processes.
Based on his research findings, Shahi pointed out that political transformation of scheduled caste people in Bihar has been one of the crucial but contradictory developments.
Citing evidences from Gaya and West Champaran districts, he said that they have not only been mute spectators to this political change, but also played a participatory role in this change. However, this socio-political change has not been uniform everywhere in the state.
The change depended on their regional history, education, landlessness, sex and political consciousness, he said.
The VC underlined the birth of new hopes and aspirations among the Dalit women and youths through their ever-increasing political awakening and use of digital platforms. The study shows that scheduled castes in Bihar are getting empowered through the constitutional guarantee of social justice and equality, he added.

Need relief from self-proclaimed gaurakshaks: cattle traders in Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Large numbers of people from the cattle trading Qureshi community took out a protest march from Aam Khas ground to the district collectorate in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Wednesday. The march aimed at pressing for their demand of action against self-proclaimed gaurakshaks or cow savers. The participating protesters also received support from a section of Dalit organisations and farmers. Kaleem Qureshi, one of the community leaders, said state govt has not paid any attention to the nearly month-long strike of members of the cattle trading community. "We demand relief from gaurakshaks who often take law into their hands. These are not cow savers but dreaded goons. The strike by the Qureshi community has taken a toll on different businesses but govt is failing to take note of it," he said. Another protester Muhammed Qureshi said: Maharashtra has no need of police stations if Gaurakshaks are enforcing their own laws." "There is no account of cows saved by gaurakshaks as some of them smuggle cattle for their own profit. These so-called cow savers enjoy protection from govt," he said. Leaders of the community said they have already submitted a memorandum to DGP Rashmi Shukla but still there has been no relief so far. After Wednesday's march, the community has warned of stepping up their protest if state govt fails to pay heed to its demand.

Woman gang-raped in M.P., four held
A 19-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by four men in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district, police said on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Police said the incident took place on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) afternoon when the woman and her friend visited a forested area under Churhat police station limits. The four accused have been arrested. Sidhi Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma told The Hindu that finding the couple in a secluded area, the accused followed them. 'They thrashed the man and while he ran to seek help, the accused raped the woman,' Mr. Verma said, adding that the woman and her friend reported the incident at Semaria police station. Mr. Verma said five teams of 10 personnel each were formed to trace the accused. 'Three were nabbed overnight, while one man had been hiding atop a nearby hill. Our teams searched for him for 10 hours and caught him on Wednesday evening,' he said. An FIR has been filed under relevant provisions against the four accused, he added. Following the incident, State Congress president Jitu Patwari slammed the State's ruling BJP over the incident and said such incidents prove the 'failure of the government'. 'When will the horror of cases of Dalit, tribal, and women's oppression decrease? When will the government ensure their safety? In the past three years, 7,418 cases of rape of Dalit and tribal women, 558 murders, and 338 gang rapes have been recorded in Madhya Pradesh! The figures recorded in the government report itself reveal that on average, seven Dalit/tribal women are raped every day,' Mr. Patwari wrote on Twitter, while tagging Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also heads the Home Department.
