Sabah sets aside RM600K to help gig workers open EPF accounts
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is allocating about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said a total of 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF.
'I would like to announce that the... RM600,000 (is) to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open EPF accounts,' he said at Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday (Aug 17).
On the event, he said the large presence of around 60,000 riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the public.
'I am impressed to see the support shown by participants from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion,' Hajiji said.
Advising participants to prioritise safety while on the road, he hoped the gathering would help create greater awareness of its importance among two-wheeler enthusiasts.
Hajiji said the state government viewed youths as assets, with various initiatives implemented to develop human capital.
He said it had spent a total of RM1.33bil – RM848.26mil for education assistance and RM485mil for talent and skills development programmes – from 2021 to 2025.
After his speech, Hajiji led the participants in prayers for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, the 13-year-old student who died on July 17, a day after being found unconscious on the ground floor of her school dormitory in Papar.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Security is prepared to summon the Defence Ministry and the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO) to explain measures to prevent further incidents of armed forces officers colluding with syndicates. Ikmal described the involvement of senior officers in leaking information to smugglers as alarming, saying it raised questions on whether other compromises had taken place. "This is not just about patrol information in the south but also potentially sensitive details on issues like the South China Sea and military readiness. "My concern is greater because those detained are senior officers of the MDIO, a key branch of the armed forces responsible for handling intelligence, both physically and digitally," he said. One of the suspects, Ikmal said, was related to a former army chief. He also asked for clarity on what counter-intelligence measures ministry and MDIO had taken to address the breaches once exposed. Earlier reports said the MACC remanded 10 people, including senior military officers, as well as two journalists. The suspects were detained in "Op Sohor" by the MACC's Intelligence Division and its Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) in the Klang Valley after a 12-month probe. Preliminary investigations revealed the officers leaked operational military information to smugglers bringing in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, worth about RM5 million a month. They are believed to have received between RM30,000 and RM50,000 in bribes for each smuggling trip, amassing more than RM3 million over the past five years.

He said a total of 11,109 applications had been received. 'This initiative aims to support those e-hailing workers who have yet to open an EPF account,' he said at the launch of the Sabah Moto Day event, which attracted about 60,000 motorcyclists and motorsports enthusiasts from Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. Hajiji also announced a youth programme grant of RM300,000 to be distributed to youth NGOs in the Tanjung Aru, Petagas, and Tanjung Keramat constituencies within the Putatan parliamentary area. He said the state government had invested more than RM1.3 billion, including RM848 million for educational assistance and RM485 million for talent development and skills programmes since 2021.

JOHOR BAHRU – A man has been arrested for arson after he set fire to a Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) tow truck at a vehicle storage depot. Johor Bahru South District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the incident happened at about 11.07am on Friday after the suspect's Perodua Axia had been towed by MBJB the day before. 'The suspect, who did not have money to pay the compound, was asked to file an appeal but felt the process was too difficult before taking action beyond the law,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Raub added that closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) footage showed the suspect pouring petrol and setting fire to the MBJB tow truck, causing a blaze with an estimated loss of about RM10,000. Police acted quickly, arresting the suspect at around 1.06pm the same day. Investigators also seized case items, including an aluminium container and a lighter. Investigations revealed that the suspect had previous records under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, though his urine test came back negative for drugs. The man has since been remanded for five days until Tuesday as police continue their probe under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine. Raub further warned that taking the law into one's own hands is a dangerous act that can "threaten lives, destroy property, and disrupt public order."
