FBI Warning—Do Not Reply To These Texts On Your Smartphone

American smartphones are under attack from malicious text messages. This industrial scale campaign is driven by organized criminal gangs in China, well beyond the reach of U.S. law enforcement. If you do succumb to an unpaid toll, DMV or Amazon refund text, your phone, your data and even your identity could be at risk. But there's a different wave of text attacks now targeting phones, and it's harder to detect. These messages do not pretend to come from a DMV or bank or retailer, but from someone you know. There's no link to click. The attacker just wants you to reply. The FBI's warning is clear. 'Verify the identity of the person calling you or sending text or voice messages" before you reply.' If the text shows up on your phone with the usual contact details you'd expect, then it's fine. The issue is where the sender is unknown. If that's the case, the FBI says, 'before responding, research the originating number, organization, and/or person purporting to contact you. Then independently identify a phone number for the person and call to verify their authenticity.' The team at MalwareBytes has just published a useful report on these 'innocent' texts that are anything but. 'All the messages are carefully crafted to seem plausible—so you don't immediately feel suspicious — and short — to trigger your curiosity.' The text may a single word, a 'hey' or a 'hello.' Or it might be a message that appears to either be a wrong number or a lost contact or a continuation of a thread you've started elsewhere. It doesn't matter what lure is used. Once you reply, even if it's just to inform the sender they have the wrong number then you fall into the trap. The lure could be more specific, 'a doctor's appointment, a social event, a funeral, a hospital visit, a message after a long absence,' but the objective is the same. The end result could be financial scam such as a crypto investment, or a romance scam where the by-chance encounter with a wrong number seems to lead to more, or that could escalate into a sextortion scam, if the exchange includes sharing images. As the FBI explains, 'the scammers behind the fake wrong-number text messages are counting on you to continue the conversation. They want to exploit your friendliness. Once they've made a connection, they'll work to become friends or even cultivate a remote romantic relationship.' And while 'they're posing as regular people who entered the wrong numbers on their phones,' in reality these 'fake wrong-number text scams use extremely sophisticated technology to commit their crimes.' The FTC reports that 'losses to text scams hit $470 million' last year, including 'wrong number scams that start as a seemingly misdirected message," but which 'evolve into a conversation with romantic undertones that can lead to investment and other scams.' McAfee warns 'these messages may seem harmless, but they're often the first step in long-game scams designed to steal personal data—or even life savings.' And they're surging, with '1 in 4 Americans having received one.' At any point you 'believe you are a victim of a scam,' the FBI tells phone users, 'end all communication with the perpetrator' immediately and contact law enforcement.

9 Things To Protect Your Electronics From Heat And Sun

No matter where you're going this summer, chances are your electronics are coming with you. It's not like you would go literally anywhere without your phone, right? If you're planning on heading to the beach or lounging poolside, you may want to read on your Kindle or tablet. Or hey, maybe you even plan on bringing your laptop outside to soak up some sun during work hours. PSA: Heat and sun can damage your electronics. If they're kept in a hot car or in direct sunlight outside, they can overheat. When this happens, it can damage the battery, cause the display to crack or ruin the internal components. Just like you need protection from the sun, so do your tech devices. Protect your tech with the 10 accessories rounded up here. A thermal phone case Made from the same material that NASA spacesuits are made of, this thermal phone sleeve is big enough for any size phone and will keep your phone protected from the heat. It's water resistant too, which comes in handy for when you bring your phone to the beach or pool. Promising review: 'I use it mainly by the swimming pool, and it's great. So many people have asked me about it and where to get one. I highly recommend this!' —Rebecca NunezGet it from Amazon for $39.99 (available in two sizes and three colors). A laptop shade If you want to work outside, you need to protect your laptop from direct sunlight. A shaded hood, like this one, serves as a shield from the sun on all sides. You'll be able to see your screen better review: 'Problem: 'Working by the pool on my computer while actually getting sun rather than being under an umbrella to see my screen. Solution: This product! It completely solved my problem and was a hit at the pool! The only issue I faced is that if the gust of wind is strong enough that it will fold in on itself. It is thin, stylish, and easy to use.' —Lauren Ashton Weaver Get it from Amazon for $59.99+ (available in two sizes and four colors). An iPad case While it's still a smart idea to cover your iPad with a beach towel or stash it in your bag when you're not using it to protect it from the sun, having a durable cover like this helps too. Not only will it protect your iPad from direct sun, it also doubles as a stand for when you're using review: 'I love this iPad case. The material is so easy to clean. I love that the back is clear as it allows me to customize the inside of the case and I can see my work clearly. It closes magnetically and offers a spot to hold your Apple Pencil or Stylus. It's durable and such great quality, it's definitely one of the best cases I've had for my tablet. They offer a variety of colors to choose from, however, I am partial to this pink color.' —FalonGet it from Target for $34.99 (available in two colors). Or a Kindle cover that will preserve its battery Direct sunlight can drain electronics' batteries, but that won't happen with this Kindle cover, which comes in a variety of colors. Besides offering full screen protection, it automatically turns the Kindle on and off when opened and closed to preserve review: 'I just received this today for my new 11th generation Kindle. It is lightweight, attractive, practical and fits perfectly. I love the fact that it wakes up and puts the Kindle to sleep when it is opened and closed. If it protects your device from drop damage even once, it's more than worth the nine bucks! What are you waiting for?' —Greg it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in 28 colors). A cooling fan for your phone You know your phone is in trouble when it starts feeling really hot. This fan cools it down ASAP. It's small, which makes it easy to bring with you anywhere, but you do need a power source to use review: 'I use this as a phone mount for my car. I drive something with a convertible rooftop and it's frequently down in the summer, which means my phone is not only under the windshield and not getting airflow, but is also getting blasted by blazing sunlight. I have been using this for a while, and it works excellently. The gripping arms are more sturdy than other options I have tried, and this does an excellent job moving heat so long as the fan isn't blocked. Even then, it still does well enough. The fan is a bit loud, but when I'm driving, I don't hear it and it protects my phone from overheating while running my Android Auto. Absolutely recommend and I plan on getting another. Just note, this won't work well with 99% of cases! It works best if you don't have one at all, but I was able to find one for my phone made of a thermally conductive material. Quick additional note: Make sure you use a strong enough USB power adapter! Even some of my 15w USB-C bricks don't like this thing and it won't power it. The technology these things use is VERY power hungry and not just any USB adapter will work, if it doesn't power on- try something else!' —A dragonGet it from Amazon for $18.74+ (available in seven styles and colors). ...or a mini beach umbrella The same way that a beach umbrella gives you sun protection, this mini umbrella works as a sun shield for your phone. Besides blocking out UV rays, it also makes the screen easier to read. The adjustable handle can be used to move the shade around, so you can change its position as the sun moves throughout the review: 'What can I say? I just had to have it and absolutely love it. Super helpful to shade my phone screen when I'm in the pool and helps prevent it from getting so hot. So stinking cute I couldn't resist!' —Denise it from Amazon for $12.34+ (available in nine colors). A laptop fan If you're a regular laptop user, you know that your device can heat up suddenly even when it's not remotely close to the sun. This laptop stand contains three fans that are designed to be ultra-quiet and transmit a cooling breeze to your computer if you feel like it's getting too warm. Promising review: 'This was seriously useful. I have an old MacBook Pro from 2017, and it overheats easily. This desk fan is light, easy to take with me in my Swissgear SmartScan backpack, and cools my laptop. What's so awesome is that it uses such little battery that I am able to plug a small portable battery into it and it just keeps running for about 7.5 hours straight on a small 10,000mAh portable battery. Without needing to be plugged into the wall or an outlet. Super intuitive design. The only mark against it is that the included "anti-slip pads" are very small, and don't seem to have the ability to keep my computer from slowly sliding off the cooling pad when i have it angled and elevated. Now, I do believe that could be fixed just by ordering a few cheap anti-slip pads to add to the cooling pad's surface. Slightly annoying, but still an incredible product.' —SterlingCheneyGet it from Amazon for $27.99 (available in three colors). A waterproof gear case that will also block sunlight Keep your phone both cool and dry by stashing it in this Yeti bag while you enjoy the summer sun. It comes in bigger sizes, too, if you want one for your larger review: 'I got it for my husband's birthday and we loved it at the beach! So sturdy!' —Annabelle ScottGet it from Amazon for $40+ (available in 14 colors). A sun shade for your car It's never a great idea to leave your electronics in a hot car, but if you are going to keep them there for a while, having a car sun shade will prevent the interior from getting as heated as it would otherwise. This one comes in a variety of sizes, so you can get the perfect fit for your car windshield. Promising review: 'I bought these sunshades in Medium for both my Chevy Traverse and Nissan Titan, and they fit perfectly in both vehicles. Living in Arizona, the summer sun can be brutal, but these window shield covers have made a noticeable difference — my cars are several degrees cooler every time I get in. They're easy to use, sturdy, and do exactly what they promise. I highly recommend them if you're trying to beat the heat and protect your interior from sun damage. Worth every penny! —DavidGet it from Amazon for $12.98+.

3 No-Brainer Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks to Buy Now and Hold Forever

Key Points The biggest winners from the AI revolution will all have durable competitive advantages. Despite strong operating results, these stocks still look like great values amid the AI stock boom. With long-term potential gains from AI, you can buy them now and hold them forever. 10 stocks we like better than Amazon › Excitement around artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on businesses has led to soaring stock prices for many of the biggest tech companies. Nvidia, for example, has seen its stock price grow more than tenfold since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, now topping $4 trillion in market cap. Some investors may feel like they've missed the boat and they're too late to buy AI stocks at a good price. It's important to consider that today's AI winners might not be the biggest companies to benefit from advancements in artificial intelligence over the long run. Finding a company that's making excellent progress right now with sustainable long-term competitive advantages could end up being an even better stock to own when the dust settles. These three companies are all well positioned to benefit from the continued growth and advancement in artificial intelligence. Their stocks are all attractive at today's prices, too, which means you can buy them now and hold them forever. 1. Amazon Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is home to the largest public cloud computing platform in the world, Amazon Web Services, or AWS. The segment generated $116.4 billion over the last 12 months, roughly 50% larger than its next-closest competitor, Microsoft's Azure. Some have expressed concern about AWS for a few reasons. First, it was caught flat-footed as the generative AI opportunity was getting off the ground. That led it to cede market share to Microsoft and others who were earlier to invest in the space. However, it quickly course corrected, releasing its Bedrock platform, and it's seeing triple-digit growth in AI services. As such, it's been able to maintain most of its market share in a rapidly growing market (even though overall revenue growth has slowed to the high-teens). The second reason is that AWS saw a significant decline in operating margin in the second quarter. Management explained half of that decline was due to the timing of stock-based compensation. The rest is explained by Amazon's significant investments in capacity, as it notes the business remains capacity constrained. Over time, investors should see margin tick back up. It's worth noting AWS still commands higher margins than its smaller competitors. Meanwhile, the rest of Amazon looks strong. Its retail operations are seeing improved margins quarter after quarter, thanks in part to a strong advertising business. The international segment is notably on its way to becoming a meaningful contributor to operating income after years of investment. The stock fell following the release of its second-quarter earnings based on a disappointing outlook. But the long-term potential for Amazon, particularly in AWS, remains strong. The pullback in price looks like an opportunity for long-term investors to buy this AI leader. 2. Salesforce Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) provides a suite of software often found at the center of many enterprises' operations. The company has seen very good results with its growing set of cloud-based software solutions, but the standout recently has been its Data Cloud offering. Data Cloud provides a single platform to aggregate all of a company's data to create actionable insights from a single source. Data Cloud recurring revenue grew to $1 billion in Salesforce's most recent quarter, up 120% year over year. It's seeing strong attachment, with 60 of its top 100 deals including Data Cloud in the contract. And the most recent product built on top of Data Cloud, Agentforce, is seeing very strong adoption. Agentforce allows businesses to build AI agents that can execute tasks or provide customer service with minimal human intervention. The key to building successful AI agents is access to pertinent data, which is exactly what Data Cloud brings to the table. Management says it's made 8,000 deals with Agentforce since its launch last fall, representing $100 million in revenue. That makes it Salesforce's fastest-growing product ever. Considering Salesforce's software suite is entrenched in the operations of so many enterprises, it's in a prime position to benefit from growing spend on artificial intelligence, particularly through Data Cloud. It's unlikely to lose that position. In fact, its expanding suite of software tools only serves to increase the switching costs for a company. With shares trading for just 22 times forward earnings estimates, Salesforce looks like a great buy at today's price. 3. Meta Platforms Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) may be the biggest investor in artificial intelligence in the world. It's on track to spend between $66 billion and $72 billion on capital expenditures, and it's only building compute power for itself (unlike the other hyperscalers, who serve cloud customers). There's a good reason Meta is spending more than everyone else on artificial intelligence; it could be the biggest beneficiary of all generative AI has to offer. Signs of that are already coming through. In the second quarter, Meta's ad prices climbed 9% year over year and impressions grew 11%. CEO Mark Zuckerberg notes a significant portion of that improvement came from its AI-recommendation model. Additionally, time spent on Facebook and Instagram increased 5% and 6%, respectively, thanks to bigger AI models. But the future is bright, too. Meta's generative AI tools for ad creative are seeing strong adoption. Zuckerberg notes "a meaningful... [percentage] of our ad revenue now... [comes] from campaigns using one of our Generative AI features." Long term, Meta is working on an AI agent that can develop and test ad creatives autonomously. Meta's AI chatbot now boasts over 1 billion users, creating an additional channel for monetization over the long run. Meta only recently started putting ads in WhatsApp and Threads, which should provide additional ad revenue as advertising on Meta grows increasingly easier thanks to generative AI capabilities. Meta's seeing excellent financial results from the growing adoption of its advertising platform and increased engagement from its users. Revenue climbed 22% last quarter and operating income grew an impressive 38%. Meta's growing depreciation expense will likely weigh on earnings going forward as long as it continues to ramp up spending, but if it continues to produce top-line growth like last quarter, that's easily digestible. If you back out the depreciation expense using EBITDA, Meta shares trade for an attractive price with enterprise value around 16 times forward EBITDA estimates. Even on a more traditional forward P/E valuation, Meta shares look to be well worth the 27 times multiple you'll have to pay for the stock today. Do the experts think Amazon is a buy right now?
