Leonard A. Lauder, who passed away at the age of 92 on Saturday, was celebrated not just for being a pioneer in prestige beauty, but a lifelong teacher to those who worked alongside him. During his storied career, which spanned 60-plus years, Lauder built both the Estée Lauder Cos. into a global powerhouse — with more than 20 brands and products selling in 150 countries and territories — but equally as important was his talent in cultivating leaders.
Lauder often said his favorite role was as chief teaching officer, and he loved to share information. Those who know him best often remark on the wit and wisdom he imparted daily — including in the pages of WWD and Beauty Inc, where he was frequently interviewed. Here, some of his most memorable quotes from our pages.

'We are female oriented…we have developed a marvelous team of fashion conscious and capable women. But we maintain a careful balance. Even our men learn to apply makeup — and everyone is customer subjected. Everyone must sell behind the counter to understand the customer's needs.'
'Our designs, our shades, even our color names appear in copies almost as soon as we launch the new products. We used to count on a three- to five-year run on a product before it was copied. Now they have it in less than three months. But if we have a good product, all of the knockoffs in the world can't harm its long-range success.'
'The '60s was the decade of makeup, the '70s saw tremendous increases in fragrance and now is the time for women's skin care.'

'There's a wonderful line in 'The Great Gatsby' about large parties: 'They're so intimate.' Perhaps the upside of the enlarged scale of our business is that we do have room to maneuver. We can afford to experiment by finding an intimate corner to test new ideas. What goes on in those intimate corners can have little consequence for a swell party or add just the touch of passion and magic it needs.'
'Great ballplayers know where the ball is going to be. That's how they catch it. I know where the ball is going to be.'
'My passion for this business is not to make more money, because I have more than enough money for the next five lifetimes. The passion is to build something great that can be conserved also. There is a parallel as to what I do with my art and what happens with our company.'
'To be a great leader, you firstly have to like people. If you don't like people, at the end of the day they will figure this out and you can't lead them too well.'
'In another life, I would be a gardener. Gardeners love to watch things grow and help them grow. I'm really a gardener in drag.'
'Lesson number one — people don't work for money, they work for recognition.'
'Always get there first — if you get there first, you'll win.'
'I believe life is like a mosaic — red tile, green tile, gold tile, silver tile — and it all adds up to the image of the world.'
'Anyone who says they can have their finger on the pulse of tomorrow for life is wrong. The challenge is to keep up every day. You have to read and you have to travel. You have to see what is going on in the world.'
'Never forget quality. Don't try to chisel, don't try to do it on the cheap. If you can't do a great product, don't do it. If you launch a product and think maybe you shouldn't have done it — pull it off the market.…You can make a mistake when you are learning to dance — which I always do — but you can't make a mistake when making a product for people to use. Not allowed.'

Western Craze Helps Boot Barn Kick Off Fiscal 2026 on a High Note as Firm Raises Full-Year Outlook

Boot Barn is starting a new fiscal year on a high note. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, the Irvine, Calif-based footwear company saw net sales increase 19.1 percent to $504.1 million from $423.4 million in the prior-year period. Net income in Q1 was $53.4 million, or $1.74 per diluted share, compared to $38.9 million, or $1.26 per diluted share, in the prior-year period. More from WWD Safilo's Net Profit, Sales Rise in the H1, Helped by Asia-Pacific and Tariff Offsetting Measures VF CEO Says Vans Turnaround Is 'Coming Together' as Skate Comes Back Into Focus Deckers Stock Surges After Hoka and Ugg Fuel Q1 Beat These results were above the guidance Boot Barn laid out last quarter, which called for net sales in Q1 between $483 million and $491 million, representing growth between 14 percent and 16 percent over the prior-year period. Boot Barn noted that the increase in net sales in Q1 was the result of incremental sales from new stores and the increase in consolidated same store sales. In the first quarter, Boot Barn opened 14 new stores, bringing its total store count to 473 as of June 28. John Hazen, who was officially named chief executive officer of Boot Barn in May, said in a statement that the company's latest earnings are a 'strong start' to the year, highlighted by high-single digit consolidated same-store sales growth and successful new store openings, which drove 19 percent overall revenue growth. 'Demand was broad-based, with strength across all major merchandise categories and geographies,' Hazen said. 'At the same time, we improved gross profit 210 basis points, led by robust merchandise margin expansion which, along with solid expense control, fueled a 38 percent increase in earnings per diluted share.' The CEO added that as a result of the company's better-than-expected first quarter performance and the 'continued strength' Boot Barn has seen as it moves into the second quarter, the company is raising its full-year outlook while maintaining its prior guidance for the second half of the year. In fiscal 2026, Boot Barn now expects to earn total sales between $2.10 billion and $2.18 billion, representing growth of between 10 percent to 14 percent over fiscal 2025. Net income for the year is anticipated to be between $178.0 million and $205.8 million, or $5.80 to $6.70 per diluted share. The company also noted that it expects to open between 65 and 70 new stores throughout the year. This compares to the company's previous guidance, which called for total sales for the year between $2.07 billion and $2.15 billion, representing growth of between 8 percent to 13 percent over fiscal 2025. Previous guidance for net income for the year was anticipated to be between $169 million and $197 million, or $5.50 to $6.40 per diluted share. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026, Boot Barn expects net sales between $487 million and $495 million, representing growth between 14 percent and 16 percent over the prior-year period. 'With our four strategic initiatives delivering consistent results and the opportunity we have to double our store count, we remain confident in our ability to continue generating value for our shareholders over the long term,' Hazen added. ‘Recession Glam' Seen as Top Trend for Asia's Beauty Market in 2025

A recent report from Euromonitor International has identified 'recession glam' as one of the latest trends that will reshape Asia's beauty and health market. 'With inflation front of mind, consumers' smarter spending is redefining the beauty playbook. The definition of premium is changing — less about price, more about perceived value and purpose,' according to Yang Hu, Euromonitor's Asia Pacific insight manager for health and beauty. More from WWD Lindsay Lohan Pays Homage to Her 'Freaky Friday' Roots With Ludovic de Saint Sernin Dress at London Premiere Ferragamo Maps Out Strategic Overhaul Amid Weak First-half Performance Phoebe Philo Signs Five Retailers for China Brick-and-mortar Push The trend is made evident by the rise of the fragrance category, 'which offers small indulgences at a lower price,' Hu said. Singapore and Vietnam — with 11 percent and 31 percent growth in 2024, respectively — drove fragrance sales in 2024. Euromonitor expects the category to expand 31 percent in market size within the next five years. Buying mini-size products, finding good deals, using fewer products in their beauty routine, using multifunctional products to save money and purchasing from 'cheaper but trustworthy brands' are some of the nuanced activities identified by Hu. Apart from 'recession glam,' Euromonitor identified 'clinical confidence,' 'healthspan plans,' 'loyalty immersion' and 'eco-evaluation' as major trends driving sector growth in 2025. 'Topical brands are taking the approach of 'similar to aesthetic surgery,'' Hu wrote in the report. 'Ingredients and methods used exclusively in aesthetic procedure, such as micro needles, threadlifting materials, PDRN and exosomes, are now driving a new wave of innovation in skin care product development.' 'Healthspan plans' refers to beauty supplements that tackle concerns traditionally linked to skin care products. 'It's not about antiaging, but slow aging,' Hu said. 'Beauty brands are pushing the boundary by offering UV protection, anti-oxidant support, ingestible forms of retinol and hyaluronate acid ingredients, such as Bloomage's instant coffee products.' Hu said that sustainability in beauty might not be the most relevant trend in Asia, but certain categories are experiencing a performance boost that reflects the 'eco-evaluation' trend. 'For example, fragrance, hair care and skin care are some of the categories with products performing better without sustainability claims,' Hu said. With $183 billion in total sales, Asia-Pacific accounted for 31 percent of the global beauty and personal care market, according to the market research firm. Despite 1.4 percent growth in 2024, the market is expected to rebound and sustain a 3 percent annual growth rate over the next five years. Region-wise, Southeast Asia, excluding Singapore, will lead the pack with 5 percent annual growth over the next five years. Skin care remains the largest category, accounting for half of Asian markets. Even as e-commerce penetration continues to rise, which grew from 19 percent to 30 percent in the last five years, specific offline channels, including warehouse clubs such as Sam's Club, convenient stores and variety stores, such as Miniso, have been making significant inroads in the beauty market. 'This trend suggests that consumers continue to value offline experience, while still expecting cost-effective options,' Hu said. China's beauty market, a critical player in the global industry, saw a 2 percent decline in 2024, dipping to $75 billion. Despite the slowdown, pockets of growth emerged in niche segments such as dermacosmetics, sun care and skin care products tailored for children, signaling shifting consumer priorities. 'Feedback from industry players indicate that the Chinese beauty market is highly driven by strong marketing, so as long as the beauty brands have the willingness and capital to invest in marketing, there is significant potential for market stimulation and renewed growth,' Hu said. On the player side, the market remains consolidated with leading companies, including L'Oréal, P&G, Estée Lauder, Shiseido and Proya. Brands including Kato-kato, Hapsode and Komfymed also bucked the trend and sought growth in 2024. Neochild and Bodorme were also singled out as two fast-growing child skin care brands. 'Although the birth rate in China is declining, the premiumization of baby products is enhancing,' Hu noted. Best of WWD Which Celebrity Brands Are Next for a Major Deal? Ferragamo Maps Out Strategic Overhaul Amid Weak First-half Performance

MILAN – Weak traffic, particularly in Asia-Pacific, and a difficult wholesale scenario weighed on Ferragamo's first-half performance but executive board member Ernesto Greco mapped out a detailed strategy during a conference call with analysts on Thursday, seeing some positive signs, such as an increase in conversion rates and a higher average ticket since the second quarter. 'We have undertaken a comprehensive diagnostic of our brand positioning and consumer base, with the objective of assuring full clarity and alignment across style, product, communication and distribution,' said Greco. 'This has led to the identification of the key business priorities and the development of a focused action plan. We have already started implementing tangible changes, and are confident that these efforts will become increasingly effective by the end of this year, and then even more in 2026.' More from WWD Pamela Anderson's Recent Shoe Lineup for 'The Naked Gun' Promo Tour Read Like a Trend Report Phoebe Philo Signs Five Retailers for China Brick-and-mortar Push 'Recession Glam' Seen as Top Trend for Asia's Beauty Market in 2025 Revenues in the first six months ended June 30 were down 9.4 percent to 474 million euros compared with 523 million euros in the same period last year. At constant exchange rates, they fell 7.1 percent. The performance was mainly penalized by the wholesale channel, which was down 17.9 percent to 105 million euros. In the second quarter, revenues were down 14.6 percent to 253 million euros. To improve the company's performance, Greco said the focus will be on its core offering of shoes and leather goods 'in classic and contemporary styles and less fashionable. Our goal is to deliver a global assortment, partially diversified by geography, to adapt to specific market needs, ensuring a stronger alignment with our target clients. This will be achieved through a more punctual and efficient collection structure, featuring higher depth, fewer skus — reducing them by 30 to 35 percent — and an optimized pricing architecture.' Ferragamo increased its prices by 3.5 percent to 4 percent in the U.S. at the end of June, which 'should absorb the tariffs' and the currency effects. 'The problem is the mood of the consumer and traffic but, while we have seen less customers, the conversion rate is improving and there is more interest in the products,' said Greco. Asked about the arrival of a new chief executive officer, following the exit of Marco Gobbetti in March, Greco said 'the recruiting process is underway and ongoing.' He said the strategy presented during the call was mapped out 'by a large group of professionals, internal management and external consultants.' He added that while the luxury industry 'went up by 5 to 10 percent in the 2022-2025 period, Ferragamo lost 18 to 19 percent of revenues.' Profitability was impacted in the first half, as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell 38.1 percent to 73 million euros compared with 117 million euros. Operating losses, adjusted before write-downs of assets and impairment tests, were 3 million euros compared with a profit of 28 million euros last year. The adjusted net loss was 16 million euros compared with a profit of 6 million euros at June 30, 2024. Ferragamo has been optimizing its store network, which now totals 357, and Greco said some closures are necessary, especially in China. 'Cost-effective actions such as touch-ups, attractive visual merchandising, and small changes in displays on top performing stores are indeed either showing a performance in line with the last year or even showing an average ticket up 5 percent in the second quarter, or a modest growth at a constant forex, both in the second quarter and for all the first-half period,' said Greco. Direct-to-consumer revenues decreased 6.5 percent to 357 million euros, accounting for 75.4 percent of the total. Positive results at constant exchange rates were reported in Europe and Latin America, only partly offsetting the negative performance in Asia-Pacific and Japan, said chief financial officer Pierre La Tour. The second quarter saw a slight deterioration, decreasing 5.4 percent at constant exchange rates mainly due to the worsening performances in Europe and Japan, driven by lower tourists' purchases, compensated by improving trends in North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, La Tour explained. The wholesale channel in the second quarter fell 34.3 percent, mainly due to the challenging wholesale environment. Greco said that the company has 'lost some focus' on the travel retail channel and that it will 'go back to spend some resources' in this distribution. Ferragamo has seen improvements on the digital platform, up 12 percent. 'We keep boosting our online presence by introducing new features to enhance the navigating experience, accelerate client acquisition, traffic and conversion and introduced advanced analytic,' Greco observed. The Europe, Middle East and Africa region in the first half posted a sales decrease of 7.8 percent to 116.5 million euros, accounting for 25.2 percent of the total, with growth in DTC offset by declines in the wholesale business. North America was down 3.9 percent to 141.3 million euros, accounting for 30.6 percent of the total, with DTC in line with last year at constant exchange rates, thanks to the positive performance of the primary channel. Sales in Central and South America were down 3.5 percent to 36.3 million euros, but increased 11.6 percent at constant exchange rates, penalized by exchange rates trends. Asia-Pacific was down 18.5 percent to 128.4 million euros, representing 27.8 percent of the total in sales challenged by the ongoing weak consumer environment significantly impacting traffic. Japan was down 3.5 percent to 40 million euros due to the deteriorating trend in the second quarter, a decrease of 12.6 percent at constant exchange rates, mainly because of the harder comparison base versus last year and lower Chinese tourist purchases. By category, sales of footwear were down 15.5 percent to 201.8 million euros, accounting for 43.6 percent of the total. Leather goods decreased 2.2. percent to 199.1 million euros, representing 43.1 percent of the total. Apparel fell 10.5 percent to 27.2 million euros, or 5.9 percent of the total. Silk and other categories were down 7.7 percent to 34.3 million euros. As of June 30, capital expenditure amounted to 16 million euros compared with 21 million euros in the first half last year, mainly channeled into the renovation of the retail network. Last year, investments totaled 87 million euros and Greco estimates this year they will amount to 83 million or 84 million euros, but he said that they will be channeled in a different way, 'less with influencers, less in fashion shows, and more in digital, stores and clienteling initiatives.' The net financial position was positive for 119 million euros compared with 167 million euros at June 30, 2024.
